I wash, dry, style my hair and week after week after week I've taken on board the fact that beside it falling out !!! ( menopause) its dry.

Normally i have greasy hair ( well i did, at the roots ) i used to wash it every 2,3 days, anyway my point is that NOW, for the first time in its existence, it needs TLC...

This is where i cry HELLLLLLP...

What suggestions can PLEASE offer to a girl ( WE'RE ALLLLLLL GIRLS, RIGHT ?? ) whose hair and skin is changing before her very eyes ( .... and THOSE are going wayward too !!)

Oooooo thank you AreWeThereYet i will take look.

All this bother with my hair has only come to light because i have FINALLY found a hairdresser i am comfortable with ( i avoided them like the plague)

I have shoulder length brown hair, its thick despite some of it coming out a few months ago and me having to resort to wearing a shower cap to prevent stray hairs from falling in food !!! Ughhhhhh.

Anyway thank you for your post

There is a YouTuber call Mel who I really like - she's a stylist in real life and is quite good at explaining things. She has curly hair, which is why I watch her, but a lot of her videos are equally good for straight hair. Sometimes she can be a bit too noisy and 'having fun', which sometimes makes me laugh but at other times is really irritating. She did some good videos on how to work out what type of hair you have and how to treat it. Thanks to her I know now that my hair needs a protein treatment to help keep it's curls. I'm gradually changing the products I use as I learn. I've linked a video below in case you are interested. Look for the videos about moisturizing, protein and porosity.

It's worth considering as well that your scalp may be over dry, as well as your hair. I oil my scalp the night before I properly shampoo it. It used to itch quite a lot and was sometimes flaky, plus I used to lose quite a lot of hair. Once I stopped the sulphates and started oiling the itching and flaking stopped (but of course if you use silicones and waxes in products you need the sulphates).

Have you tried Garnier Perfect Silver? And maybe lay off the shampoo for a while, just rinse in warm water once or twice per week.

Well.... FLIPPIN HECK...

I could build a space shuttle easier than choosing some of the 1,0000000000 bottles of hair care on Sainsbury's shelf today.

Whoaaaaaaaa, give me Space X anyday

Well these are my chosen 3, it was a case of snatching them off the shelf in sheer annoyance hahahaha.

I co-wash as well - I use Asiam co-wash shampoo (Boots but also online) which is nice and creamy and smells nice. Wash about every 4 days to keep my curls in. About every 2 weeks I use Dr Organic ph balanced sulphate and silicone free shampoo (I never use silicones or sulphates) and a vinegar rinse. My hair is halfway down my back and very thick.

Geekesse What is the name of the conditioner-only wash you use please.
I am quite envious of your hair it’s so thick.

Beswitched Could you say what make your topper is, please, and did you buy it on line. Thank you.

I use any conditioner that is silicone-free that I can buy in Sainsbury’s. Currently on my shelf is Garnier Ultimate Blends coconut water conditioner. I have also used Sainsbury’s cheapest coconut conditioner. My favourite one is Faith in Nature lavender and geranium (I love lavender anything), but it’s a bit more expensive than the others.

If you are going to start conditioner-only washing, you should do one final wash with a shampoo that contains sulphates to wash away the build-up of silicones that you get from using other conditioners. Then stick to conditioners that are silicone-free.

If I have to go to the hairdresser, I use shampoo just once to remove the gunk they put on my hair, and then go back to conditioner-only washing.

Some people get very ‘into’ the whole co-washing thing and use multiple products, but you don’t need to, and I don’t. I started several years ago because my DiL recommended it for my itchy scalp (it solved the problem), and carried on because it’s quicker, cheaper and leaves my hair in a better condition. Here’s a link with some explanation: actualar.co.uk/what-is-co-washing-curly-girl-method-uk-guide/

As well as all the products you could use on your hair, have you thought of helping it by taking vitamins?

A general vitamin or there is one for hair and nails I think, but cod liver oil could be best, as well as helping general health.

Mine's got better lately ? and I also took the advice of a hairdresser - don't wash it every day.

Oh dear....did you forget there are some men in here?
I'm not a man, but I have seen posts from men.
Which leads me to 'WHY do we women have all sorts of hair and body washes, but men use one for all? It's just so unfair'.
If I'm not using T-Gel - for psoriasis - then I like my brain to work so I can remember the name of the shampoo and conditioner I like, when on sale, shampoo in a black bottle and conditioner in a white bottle!
Otherwise, shops own!!
You could try a hot oil treatment like VO5. Very nice for a treat now & then, and not too pricey.
Or try Pure & Simple. They're Ph balanced.

I like Percy & Reed shampoo and conditioner. I also use a leave-in conditioner by Wella before drying as I have long hair.

Oldbat1 Sat 22-Jan-22 09:44:00

I use the Aussie thickening shampoo. I now don’t use conditioner as my hairdresser said I didn’t need to. I do use some lovely smelling light hold spray called Lemon Sage before finger drying. It works for me.

grin we re watched them all over Christmas - there is an contains offensive content warning on them now!

This is my favourite line from The Royles…

Jim: (Leaving the house) ‘Get your coat Nana…’

Nana: (excited) ‘Why, are you taking me to The Feathers?’

Jim: ‘No, I’m turning the gas fire off’

JaneJudge Sat 22-Jan-22 09:13:08

My hairdresser recommended The Body Shop Ginger shampoo and conditioner and it is lovely (good for dry scalp too) but Barbara - it says 'not tested on animals'. What if I spill some on a dog ~ Nana the Royle family smile

Hi

My topper is a Zara one. I got it from a specialised place here in Dublin and they cut it to suit my existing hair style.

I would recommend going to specialists. My hairdresser recommended this place to me.

Serendipity22 Sat 22-Jan-22 09:03:52

Hahahahahahaha Fanny

Thats funny, 2 heads. grin

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Jan-22 09:01:38

mokryna I’ve just remembered that you are in France, and that you may be fortunate enough not to have that very annoying and patronising Plantur 39 advert.
It makes out that being ‘over 40’ is something akin to having two heads.

Serendipity22 Sat 22-Jan-22 08:56:53

I've woken up to heaps of really helpful posts.....THANK YOU.

Im going shopping today so looks like i will be coming home with stacks and stacks of hair products.

Thank you everyone.

Us GIRLS need to take care of our locks.

mokryna Sat 22-Jan-22 08:30:06

Thank you FannyCornforth , I haven’t much hair left and it frizzes at the ends but I do have it cut every 6 weeks. Over 40s, aren’t there shampoos for over 70s?

Jane43 Sat 22-Jan-22 03:38:57

We used to spend time in Florida and although it was on the greasy side my hair used to get very dry because of the sun. I discovered leave in conditioner was very good.

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Jan-22 03:23:45

mokryna I haven’t read the full thread yet, but I use co-wash too.
I have curly hair and I tend to follow (quite loosely) the Curly Girl Method.
I also use Palmers conditioning shampoo. It’s really lovely

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Jan-22 03:20:54

I’m not sure about over 50s, but I know that Plantur 39 is especially for the (^whispers conspiratorially ^) ‘over 40’s’ blush
