So Camilla who was married to a philanderer had an affair and is the baddie. Diana had several affairs because she was hurt and this is understandable.
Why can’t some view this tragedy from all sides ?
The tragedy is the misogynistic and hypocritical attitude towards women that underpins the Monarchy.
The heir can play the field in his youth but must choose an untarnished virgin for his bride.
Because of the intrusiveness of the media, Charles and Diana spent very little time alone getting to know each other in the way that 'normal' people do. The tragedy began right there.
The pressure was on him to settle down and produce an heir. The parenting skills of his father left a lot to be desired - Philip communicated his feelings about the relationship via a memo to Charles - "either marry her or let her go".
Charles' upbringing is a study on its own, and much has been written about it.
He should have been allowed to marry Camilla instead of Diana. But the attitude towards divorced women doesn't allow that because they are 'tainted'. That's the real tragedy.
If you look at the history of the Monarchy - it's mostly the women who fare badly under the institution.
I'm not a Monarchist anyway - but I do feel sorry for the women... Camilla, Diana - and Kate, who is under enormous pressure to maintain her goddess-like image. Fortunately the Queen has been well-trained from early womanhood to fulfil her role, understands her duties and is unlikely to ever put a foot in the wrong direction..
