Places you didn't realise were so wonderful

Escape to the Country yesterday was set in Lincolnshire. I had no idea how beautiful it is with such pretty villages, elegant towns and glorious beaches. We see so little of it on TV. Lovely as they are, Yorkshire, Cornwall and the Lake District seem to get all the attention. I wonder if there are other less talked about places which you've discovered and fallen in love with?

York is wonderful. Very compact and easy to walk around, with history around every corner.

I left UK 30 years ago, and now live in Spain's I realise now that I haven't seen enough of my home country, and am really keen to visit York....anyone recommend it, and what to see while there?

The Malvern hills are lovely, a pleasure to walk, easy to get to and not that well known.

We live in Northumberland which is a wonderful place to be but definitely more touristy now. No longer am I the only person on the beach which 15years ago would be a regular occurrence but I’m happy to share.

Everyone I met in Newcastle kept saying "Ere! Apples and pears! Oh gawd blime!"
as if I was suddenly going to burst into a cockney song and dance. grin

I agree, some lovely villages in Essex and the coast of Northumberland and I'm from the Cotswolds originally.

Flash highest village in the UK above sea level Callistemon! smile

Newcastle is a lovely city MissAdventure, I always have a stop over there when I go up to Alnmouth.

Talking architecture, Bath does it for me every time.

Yes, I thought it would be a rusty old thing.

The architecture in Newcastle is wonderful. I was also blown away by how moving and beautiful the Angel of the North is as you pass it on the A1.

Newcastle surprised me.
Some beautiful scenery, and such friendly people.

I've lived on the edge of the Peak District for almost 50 years and I'm still discovering beautiful chocolate box villages: Litton, Monsal Dale, Tissington, Great Hucklow, Cutthorpe.... beautiful little hamlets and villages in stunning countryside.

Ilam, Butterton, Flash, Dovedale, Manifold Valley .....

I’ve started exploring more close to home. Maldon is lovely. Slightly further away, I’m in love with Ireland!

^This really made me laugh. Don't get me wrong, I just love the Cotswolds, outside^ tourist season - but 'lively' is not really the right word.

grannyrebel did correct her mistake to lovely in her following post @ 16.35 kali2

I know - thanks. Which prompted me to comment, lol smile

The Cotswolds is lively. Watch the Pam Ayres programmes about it.

If you want the Cotswold charm without all the tourists and the non-stop tea shops, souvenirs and post-cards- head for wonderful Rutland.

We discovered Hull when DD went to university there 20 years ago, a busy lively city. Lovely green avenues and amazing buildings. And of course the street called The Land of Green Ginger!

Warwickshire, I used to drive up to Scotland for holidays completely oblivious to the lovely country I was missing!

Happy that you like my lovely county.

We live in beautiful rural Shropshire. It really is the most unspoilt county and has rolling hills in the south, lakes in the North and lots of lovely little towns as well as the county town of Shrewsbury. There are excellent drives and walks in the hills where you rarely see another person and the views are spectacular.
We holidayed in North Somerset last year, an area I vaguely remembered from a school field trip in the 70s. Wonderful scenery , quaint villages and a lovely coastline. Not so exciting on the Levels around Glastonbury & Street where DD was at school but Wells is a super little city with a stunning cathedral.
DD now lives in Lincolnshire, not far from the stunning town of Stamford. It's not dead flat around her home and the limestone villages in the area are very attractive.

I’m a big fan of Cheshire and had a caravan near Delamere forest. Miss it a lot and not far from Liverpool.

How good to hear Cheshire get a mention. I used to come down from South Liverpool for walks in Delamere and along the Trent and Mersey Canal. Changed circumstances (drastically) saw me moving to the north of Northwich area 30 iplus years ago and I love it here. Just been out with my dog and hardly seen a soul, unfortunately it's getting built up now though, property developers buy every inch, given half a chance.
The other place I go as a bolthole is strictly off limits for publication but it's the most wonderful patch of tucked away Scotland. I echo another's comments... long may everyone else go somewhere else! ?
