Did you know that collagen and gelatin are the same thing? It's called collagen inside the body and forms connective tissue i.e. skin, tendons, ligaments etc. It's called gelatin when skeletal tissue and other animal waste is rendered down as a by product of meat production. (Vegans and vegetarians take note! This is where collagen comes from whether you swallow it or apply it externally!) A rose by any other name...

Whatever the beauty industry tells us, (and they try hard to convince us), both substances are broken down to exactly the same amino acids in the digestive system and used to repair and build new proteins.

The offer of collagen powder on GN today normally retails at £6.25 per 100g (40% off your first order fetches it down to £2.50/100g. The offer is a 400g tub for £24.99)

Amazon sells a gelatin powder for approx £1.60 per 100g. Some is even cheaper.

paleoleap.com/all-about-gelatin-and-collagen Read right to the end of this one. It's not long winded and won't blind you with science! If it doesn't work as a link, just copy and paste or type it in.

sorry but the banana is a herb

How Bananas Are Grown. Banana plants are often mistaken for trees or palms – they are actually herbs. ... Bananas do not grow from a seed but from a bulb or rhizome, and it takes 9 to 12 months from sowing a banana bulb to harvesting the fruit.

Did you know bananas are herbs Yes, I did but I didn't know they are related to ginger.

I love facts like that.

Same, Meryl.

Another one I love is that there is more time separating a Stegosaurus and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, than a Tyrannosaurus Rex and us.

Blows my mind!

My Dh caught me messing about with a bowl of water and a lemon and a lime today. grin

Got one… apparently there is a company that turns dead bodies into an ocean reef…(mix the deceased ashes with concrete I believe)

You can't lick your own elbow. Mind you, it is advisable to not lick anyone else's elbow without their express permission.

My youngest daughter can!

Did you know you started your ‘life’ inside your grandmother?

Cleopatra lived closer in time to the release of the first iPhone than she did to the building of the pyramids at Giza.

Nothing to add I’m afraid but a fabulous interesting thread, thank you Lizzie ?..

You live and learn Callistemon! I didn't know that it was illegal to linger after a burial until today. I'm curious to know why though!

^I was taught at school that a tomato is a false fruit^ yes, I remember being taught that too. And that a fruit with a stone: cherry, plum, peach or apricot is a drupe.

Chewbacca in Australia they'd call them stone fruit- basic but explanatory!

I'd never heard of drupe

Callistemon21 Fri 28-Jan-22 15:58:13

Sorry JackyB
I learnt that from Martin Clunes last night ?

Did you know that the Galapagos Islands have a human population of about 30,000?

Perhaps you knew already, but I always thought they were uninhabited by humans.

Damn!! That was one of the questions in a Christmas quiz I took part in. (We're still waiting for the results - the organisers are rather chaotic). Our team of 3 were unanimous that the population was 3! (Out of Multiple choice answers 30000, 3000 and 3)

I should be able to post a "Did you know?" about Germany. Will come back when I've thought of one.

The balcony, where Shakespeare had Romeo pledge his undying love to Juliet. ... This balcony wasn't even added to the facade of the house until 1936. In fact, the balcony was actually taken from an ancient sarcophagus and re-purposed to match the Medieval. A local guide told us this shattering news.

I'm glad so many people are engaging with this thread. It was indeed GN who were promoting the collagen supplement. I just offered a price comparison. I didn't spot an option to buy anything on the link I posted. I'll take another look.

My son was taking issue this morning over the US insistence that tomatoes are a vegetable not a fruit, because they are not sweet, so my contribution today is: Did you know that the part of a plant that contains seeds is (botanically speaking) a fruit? So that includes tomatoes, bell peppers, pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers etc. So the pods that contain beans, peas etc. are also fruits. Rhubarb is a stem, not a fruit.

NotAGran55 No offence taken ?

I was taught at school that a tomato is a false fruit, the part we eat contains the seeds rather than being the seed, which botanically speaking makes it a false fruit.

Same applies to loads of other fruits.

lizzypopbottle Fri 28-Jan-22 14:46:50

And I reckon tomatoes are also berries... ?

lizzypopbottle Fri 28-Jan-22 14:45:02

Yes, bumblebee34 so raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are not actually berries but pumpkins, avocados and cucumbers are berries (and as I said before, if it contains seeds, it's a fruit...)

bumblebee34 Fri 28-Jan-22 14:40:09

Bananas are berries
A true berry is a fruit that develops
from a single flower and a single
ovary. The ovary is the female part of
a flower. That means grapes, kiwis,
and even bananas are berries.
