Where did all the eccentrics go?

The world used to be full of eccentrically dressed people when I was growing up but these days everyone dresses more or less the same. Have we changed, can’t we be bothered, or is there more pressure to conform now ? Maybe Covid hasn’t helped or perhaps there is no need and anything goes, anyway ?

How do I delete a post? You can't. Gransnet HQ are the only people who can authorise deletions from the forums. To request that a post be deleted, please use the "report" button on the right hand side of each post and someone from HQ will take a look.

Then it's quite arbitrary depending on who is on duty whether they will or they won't.
Very unfair.

A lot mention people ( mainly female ) dressed in their night clothes, pyjamas and dressing gown and on 2 occasion i have seen curlers in hair. Im sorry but i just dont get it

Is it eccentricity at its worst, rebellion or just down right lazy?

Whatever label it is, its totally crass ( another label for it).

Its not an individual dress sense that displays their personality, its displaying 2 fingers up at society.

Thats my take on the whole thing.

Apart from the pyjama display amongst the detergent isle, i cant say that here in my pàrt of beautiful Yorkshire, there is any eccentricity.

confused

As Coastpath said, they're all in Glastonbury grin

nana8 I always thought there were lots of eccentrics in Australia, but perhaps they've all drifted to Byron Bay now!

isn't any eccentricity

They are in Tipton.
Trust me on this one.

Not my family, DS’s especially. All very individual and into self expression. Good for them I say. DH and me were quite ‘way out’ as they used to say, when we were at art school. My mother wouldn’t walk down the road with me.
Love a bit of individuality. Not pyjamas though, that is just laziness.

It’s far too cold to go out in pyjamas, and I don’t own any.

Love a bit of eccentricity. We have a lovely Senior Citizen lady in our town who has her hair any shade between Lilac and bright pink. She has a bright pink hooded jacket that she wears, which I would kill for?.
As for me, my friend bought me one of those studded dog collar necklaces for Christmas. I wore it to work the other day and it went down well. I turned have just turned 60....

Going out in your pyjamas was highly fashionable in some areas a few years ago. It never caught on more widely thankfully. But I wouldn't see it as eccentric. Just people continuing to follow a trend that always looked cheap and slovenly and isn't even really a trend anymore.

The two women in pyjamas I saw yesterday who were having a lovely chat on the street at lunch time looked much happier than me who was fully dressed rushing between workplaces. It may be sanity rather than laziness grin

were they the same two women? grin

Just a thought. Are you sure they were pyjamas. I've recently bought what is called lounge wear, comfortable loose what look like jogging bottoms and matching loose tops. My grandson, on seeing me yesterday, said " have you got pyjamas on?". My daughter in law said " great lounge wear". Maybe some misconceptions?

They were definitely pyjamas, brushed cotton ones

define eccentric?

We live in a small rural town. Obviously we must have more than our fair share of eccentrics here!

When I was at school in the sixties one of the mums collected her child wearing a bikini. She must have leapt off the sun lounger straight to the school although in those days parents just waited in their cars and it was up to the children to find them

Spotted a lady today who was my age and had very long green and yellow hair. She looked lovely and happy. Rare to see ‘ different’ people my age round here.

Byron Bay ain’t what it used to be, Cal. The rich have found it, sadly.

I received a photo of two of my beautiful granddaughters and admit to not being sure if they were in day clothes or summer pyjamas. I didn’t ask. To me they would look lovely in bin bags.

I think a lot of those ‘eccentric’ individuals now days would be diagnosed with dementia. Just like those absent minded people who always button their cardies wrong or put odd shoes on when going out. Also stopping mid sentence and either wondering off onto another subject or not saying anything at all and just staring into space, all early signs of dementia

My late husband was pretty eccentric - sort of absent minded professor type. Often set fire to things while experimenting. Live in a world of his own half the time. Brilliant mind but didn't always apply it to everyday life. I found it wonderfully endearing and infuriating in equal measures!

My father was an eccentric. Amusing for a while but I couldn't wait to leave home.

sazz1 Fri 04-Feb-22 12:11:53

Just could not imagine leaving the house in PJs. Although I rarely get dressed before noon but wear a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms around the house as PJs. So that would be acceptable in shops.
In the 60s 70s there were definite fashion trends eg the mini, midi, or maxi skirts and dresses; hippy flower power, biker rockers style, mods etc. Don't really see many large groups following a set trend nowadays.
In some ways I think this is good as everyone can wear whatever they like and what style suits them best

Dempie55 Fri 04-Feb-22 12:13:37

I have one that lives near me, she dresses like a Russian Countess in all weathers. Full length real fur coat with matching hat. She also has a gold lame cloak trimmed with real fur.
