Where did all the eccentrics go?

The world used to be full of eccentrically dressed people when I was growing up but these days everyone dresses more or less the same. Have we changed, can’t we be bothered, or is there more pressure to conform now ? Maybe Covid hasn’t helped or perhaps there is no need and anything goes, anyway ?

I think we are more accepting of “different” people these days. And, certainly, with a much less rigid dress code than in m6 youth, what would be classed as eccentric then would probably pass by most people today.
Having said that, my mother was deeply eccentric (I’m pretty odd myself) but dressed fairly conventionally.

Apparently it’s now called lounge wear, apparently different to pj’s though I can’t see a difference I’m afraid .

Think we are all just accepting of peoples quirks. We don't notice the differences cos there are fewer norms now and anything goes.

Annab275 more surprised that any child was collected by car in the 60s.
I recall holiday makers in Spain back in the day strolling around the resort markets and cafes in a variety of beach wear though..

I think the young still try to shock the older generation and they often do. It isn't eccentricity though. I'm thinking of all that face furniture especially the tongue piercings which can still make me feel sick to see.
Or wearing totally unsuitable attire for the weather.
In my town the youngsters seem to have a fashion of their own . It involves naked legs, both sexes, in all weathers and often bare midriffs and tattoos.

Back in the 60s I remember DM asking why we made ourselves look like corpses with black eyes and white faces.
That wasn't eccentricity was it - conformity.
I was at art school but luckily I can't find any photos!

Going out in curlers isn't new. In the 60s lots of the girls who worked in factories would go to work with their hair in rollers and a scarf tied round it
There are eccentrics of all ages around here. They don't surprise me
What I don't understand is how all the girls from about 11-18 seem to turn out absolutely immaculately even when they are just going to school.

I can assure you they live in Brighton!

Namsnanny Fri 04-Feb-22 12:17:51

Oh dear, eccentric or demented?

nanna8 Fri 04-Feb-22 12:17:00

Is he the one with a posh voice,Lizzie ?

Jacob Rees-Mogg springs to mind. He is is known as the Hon. Member for the 18th century.

I have one that lives near me, she dresses like a Russian Countess in all weathers. Full length real fur coat with matching hat. She also has a gold lame cloak trimmed with real fur.

Just could not imagine leaving the house in PJs. Although I rarely get dressed before noon but wear a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms around the house as PJs. So that would be acceptable in shops.
In the 60s 70s there were definite fashion trends eg the mini, midi, or maxi skirts and dresses; hippy flower power, biker rockers style, mods etc. Don't really see many large groups following a set trend nowadays.
In some ways I think this is good as everyone can wear whatever they like and what style suits them best

My father was an eccentric. Amusing for a while but I couldn't wait to leave home.

My late husband was pretty eccentric - sort of absent minded professor type. Often set fire to things while experimenting. Live in a world of his own half the time. Brilliant mind but didn't always apply it to everyday life. I found it wonderfully endearing and infuriating in equal measures!

I think a lot of those ‘eccentric’ individuals now days would be diagnosed with dementia. Just like those absent minded people who always button their cardies wrong or put odd shoes on when going out. Also stopping mid sentence and either wondering off onto another subject or not saying anything at all and just staring into space, all early signs of dementia

I received a photo of two of my beautiful granddaughters and admit to not being sure if they were in day clothes or summer pyjamas. I didn’t ask. To me they would look lovely in bin bags.

Byron Bay ain’t what it used to be, Cal. The rich have found it, sadly.

Spotted a lady today who was my age and had very long green and yellow hair. She looked lovely and happy. Rare to see ‘ different’ people my age round here.

When I was at school in the sixties one of the mums collected her child wearing a bikini. She must have leapt off the sun lounger straight to the school although in those days parents just waited in their cars and it was up to the children to find them

We live in a small rural town. Obviously we must have more than our fair share of eccentrics here!

greenlady102 Fri 04-Feb-22 11:54:31

define eccentric?

JaneJudge Fri 04-Feb-22 07:59:50

Just a thought. Are you sure they were pyjamas. I've recently bought what is called lounge wear, comfortable loose what look like jogging bottoms and matching loose tops. My grandson, on seeing me yesterday, said " have you got pyjamas on?". My daughter in law said " great lounge wear". Maybe some misconceptions?

They were definitely pyjamas, brushed cotton ones

JaneJudge Fri 04-Feb-22 07:58:40

The two women in pyjamas I saw yesterday who were having a lovely chat on the street at lunch time looked much happier than me who was fully dressed rushing between workplaces. It may be sanity rather than laziness grin

were they the same two women? grin

JaneJudge Fri 04-Feb-22 07:57:59

FannyCornforth

They are in Tipton.
Trust me on this one.
Your good citizens of Glasto would pick up their skirts and run

They certainly are in Tipton grin

Going out in your pyjamas was highly fashionable in some areas a few years ago. It never caught on more widely thankfully. But I wouldn't see it as eccentric. Just people continuing to follow a trend that always looked cheap and slovenly and isn't even really a trend anymore.
