Aldi Or Lidl! Which do you prefer?

We had a high street Lidl long before a non-high street Aldi was built just a mile away. I use Lidl for some items, Aldi has captured me for other things especially their look alike Lurpack butter, but Sainsbury's and M&S still feature every week. Both have some good bargains in the middle aisles, I got a great stove top steamer from Lidl which was better quality and much cheaper than I could get from John Lewis etc and they honour their 2 year guarantee without question. DH had their own brand dremel look alike tool which broke after 22 months. Emailed them with a scan of the original receipt and a complete replacement set was dispatched that same day. That's service!

Both are near me but I think I prefer the quality of the meat, vegetables and fruit at Aldi. Lidl bakery aisle is definitely superior but I buy my bread from a bakery so that's not a big enough pull for me. The "aisles of s***e" in both stores are excellent and I've had some smashing bargains from them both.

We have two branches of Lidl, one small branch close by and the other larger one within a short drive but Aldi is much further away. I shop in either Lidl regularly for everything except Oatibix and occasionally they stock that for 50pence less than in Asda.

I like all their products, especially their seeded wholemeal bread. Today, after a hospital appointment, I treated myself to a pastry, pastel de nata, first sampled in Lisbon. Yum! Their staff are always friendly and they speak positively about their favourable working conditions in terms of pay, sick pay and pension schemes. Cash back is available, too, which I prefer to hole in the wall withdrawals.

I use Aldi every week and find their fruit and veg keeps very well. I find most things i need in there and although we have a Lidl as well i won't venture there because of the bakery. The smell is so tantalising as you walk in the door!!!!! [smell]

My home town has a smallish Lidl, and there is an Aldi a drive away. I don't drive, so use the Lidl more, but the localish Aldi is a lot bigger, so has a bigger range, particularly in the 'aisle of dreams' .

Having said that, the bakery products at Lidl are much better than Aldi, and their frozen and chilled foods are more varied. That may be because of the immediate catchment areas - the nearest Aldi is in a poorer town - but Aldi seems to have lots of chips, potato products and assorted pizzas, whereas Lidl have foods from a different country each week or so.

If the local Lidl were bigger I would love it, and would definitely make it my regular supermarket if they delivered.

I can walk to Aldi and Lidl. I tend to go to Lidl as the staff who work there are lovely plus they quickly open another till if a queue forms. Aldi seems to have more choice admittedly.

Can I ask how you’ve just discovered these supermarkets when they’ve been around for a long long time.

Lidl, as I don't really know Aldi very well.

PS kittylester have you tried googling ‘accidentally gluten free’, I make a list from there of what is in Lidl before I go, and there’s a surprising number of gf items if you know what to look for?

I go to Aldi for all the usual essentials then a very short drive to Morrisons where there are good gf choices.

Lidl is a bit nearer but I prefer Aldi for quality.

Definitely Lidl for me, I like the bakery, there is more choice, and the variety of fruit and vegetables is better.

I shop twice a week, for milk and top ups, at Aldi as it is just across the road, whereas Lidl is ten minutes walk, uphill on the way back. Prices are good at both, customer service is great at Aldi and their products are good and save me money.
Lidl does have a bakery though.

Aldi is nearer and I’ve always found the fruit and veg absolutely fine. Lidl is further and I walk there for seeded wholemeal bread. Generally I prefer Aldi but both are reasonably priced. I still go to Morrisons for dried soup mix and other items not available more locally.

Customer service is far better in our local Aldi. They are very much more efficient at putting on more staff at the tills than Lidl, who always seem much slower at the checkout. The staff are friendly and cheery unlike Lidl staff who tend to be grumpier.

Oh I will have to look for that ice cream farmor15 sounds lovely! Yes I must admit I was caught by that middle aisle and bought a couple of things non food items, very pleased with them

I think Aldi is preferable to Lidl but really I don't use either.

I prefer Aldi. The food choices are healthier I think. They always open up another till if there’s a queue, unlike Lidl, and they have a hook on the trolley to put your shopping bags, Lidl have got rid of theirs.

Try the face creams, makeup and toiletries at either. Those that look like big brands are usually just as good if not better.
Our posh looking hand soap, lotion and diffuser in the bathroom is from Aldi....the only give away is the profusion of barcodes on everything.

I prefer Lidl mainly for the fresh bakery section it is a brighter shop than our local Aldi but both are really good for fresh veg and meat both have a really good cheese section.

I use both - Aldi a bit more than Lidl as closer. You really have to try a few products in each and see what you like. I find Lidl better for ice cream -'Bourbon vanilla' is the nicest I've come across and I suspect is used by some restaurants!
Beware the middle aisle tho- you can find yourself buying all kinds of things you didn't know you needed!

Lidl for bakery, muesli and cleaning products.
Aldi for nappies.

Just love browsing the 'middle of Lidl' and the Aldi equivalent and I am very lucky to have branches of both near by.
