Daffodils from school

When I worked in primary, we got kits from Marie Curie.
The children planted their own bulb and we did work around plants; following and writing instructions etc.
The children then gave a donation to Marie Curie (if they could) and took the daffodils home for their mum for Mother’s Day.
I assume and hope this still happens. It was a lovely thing to do ? ♥️

At school we grew broad beans in a jam jar with blotting paper and cress.
Not a daffodil or hyacinth in site?

The scent of hyacinths transports me back to primary school.

Why is the sense of smell so evocative of the past? Just a whiff of certain things and I am a child again.

Calendargirl I heard somewhere along the lines of this (forgive the lack of actual scientific facts ‘n’ stuff) the area of the brain where we process smell is close to the area of the brain responsible for memories; and this is somehow is behind the evocative nature of scent

It was called 'Mini pots of care' if memory serves, excellent scheme but sadly I don't think it's still running

When I was about 6 or 7 we had a teacher called Miss Swan.

I will never forget her having a lovely blue hyacinth and taking all of the individual flowers off one by one so that could count how many there were on it. I remember thinking how awful it was to destroy such a lovely flower.

Every time I see a blue hyacinth I think of Miss Swan and her vandalism

It was a lovely read but I can't remember the title of the thread.

Daffodils always make me think of Mothers Day. My Father used to buy a bucketful from the flower market so we woul£ each have a bunch to present to our mother.

I love both Daffs and Hyacinths I always buy Daffodils for St David’s day and display them in my Welsh Mums blue vase in memory.

‘Daffy down dilly, comes up to town,
In a yellow petticoat, and a green gown’.

I quote this nursery rhyme to my DH when I see a clump of daffodils growing, he thinks I am mad!

I often think, ‘What would spring be, without daffodils?’

Oopsadaisy, we grew beans in jam jars with blotting paper, too. I think it was for elementary biology - what do plants need to grow? One would be deprived of light, so it’d grow for a while, but all pale and weedy, another of water, so it wouldn’t germinate at all.

When my son was in Beavers/Cubs/Scouts he used to go to the Mothering Sunday service and bring home 3 daffodils each year. When my DH buys daffodils, I always put 3 in a separate vase - silly, I know, but it brings back happy memories.

All the children used to be given a bunch of daffodils in church on Mothering Sunday to give to our mothers. As I was one of four children, three of us were told by mum to give our bunches to various childless women in the congregation, my mum only kept one bunch. I remember being very upset one year that it was not my bunch that mum kept and did not want to give mine away to some random woman! Now I appreciate mums generous gesture.
