We have just returned from the BEANO exhibition in London. It brought back so many memories. Every week my dad bought us the Beano and the Dandy, it was a highlight of our week. Occasionally he would buy the Beezer and the Topper, if funds allowed.

It was so interesting to learn about the history of the comics. I never knew that, during the war, even though paper was rationed, the comics were still printed. They encouraged children to help in the war effort as well as poke fun at Hitler.

My favourite Christmas present was always the comic annuals. Later I went on to the Bunty, I can still remember some of the features.

I had Robin or Jack and Jill as a small child. Girl or Princess Tina as an older child, and Jackie as. teenager.Like others I remember Cathy and Claire problem page so well.

Has to be Princess comic for me. I also used to spend hours cutting out the pictures of ballerinas. I would glue them onto paper then take them to show my ballet teacher.

In Bunty and Judy there always seemed to be a lot of class division between posh swots and common little guttersnipes, phrases my DSis and I still fling at each other with hilarity.

In the 1950s when I was a young teenager I had Collins Magazine. It was quite literary, definitely not a comic! Readers could submit poems and essays, and I had a couple of pieces published in it. I was thrilled to be paid 10/6 for a book review.

Nowadays magazines for children tend to stress science and facts. I don’t think there is an equivalent of Collins, where the arts are considered important.

My younger brother had Robin then, later, Eagle and I had Girl. I really preferred School Friend but wasn't allowed it. We had the Children's Newspaper too ixion but I can only remember finding it boring. Strangely I now love reading a broadsheet newspaper!

I would have never called myself a swot. ?

I Just loved to read!

Calendargirl Sat 19-Feb-22 07:15:25

Marydoll.

Yes, on page 2, MiniMoon said she was forced into having L&L. I sympathised and said it was always the ‘swots’ who read it.

Bunty was so much more fun.

Does anyone remember the Look and Learn comics? We used to have a stash in our classroom, I loved reading them. My aunt gave me the annual one year, I was over the moon.

I got "Girl" and my friend got "School Friend" which we used to swap. My cousins got "Children's Newspaper".

Can anyone tell me which comic Moony (Moonie?) was in? It was some sort of alien that could take on any form, anything from a dog to a milk bottle but you always knew it was him as whatever shape he was he retained his colour, black with white spots.
The same comic had Twizzle who's arms and legs were like twisted elastic and he could stretch to save kittens from trees and other fabulous-to-a-5-year-old kind of syuff.
They were both in an old annual which my nana kept for me and must have been read hundreds of times.
Time was somewhere before 1965.

Teddy Bear comic.
I remember realising that I really was a little too old for it and opting instead for Beano and Sparky and thereafter, Pony Magazine (really grown up, magazine, not comic!). Then Jackie!
I still have my Teddy Bear annuals somewhere. The artwork is just beautiful and the stories so innocent.

I was not allowed to have Bunty or Jackie! I had Robin and then Girl ... posh comics!

We used to spend our summers in Exmouth where my gran lived and the comics organised events on the beach. I remember them fondly.

I used to get Bunty, Judy and June and Schoolfriend and my brother got Dandy and Beano. We sometimes got Beezer and Topper at weekends. We also got some imported American Magazines, like Superman, Casper, Archie. We also got the Summer Specials and, of course, the Annuals each Christmas.
I have now got extensive collections of Bunty, Judy, School Friend and Girls Crystal annuals thanks to eBay and second hand book shops.
I also managed to buy some CDs from Ebay with copies of Bunty and Judy from the beginning of their publications and spent many happy hours during lockdowns reading them. Happy Days!

Gwenisgreat1 Fri 18-Feb-22 22:34:55

I used to get the girl's crystal while my sister got The School Friend, so we would swap. We were not allowed the Dandy, Beano or Girl.

Loved comics as a child. Beezer comes to mind. Used to do drawings of them all. Numbskulls always fascinated me with its weirdness.
But my favourite was Jackie magazine. The hand-drawn stories of young love, Cathy and Claire problem page. Pull-out pics of pop stars. All very 70s.

Madeleine There is a pub here in the Midlands called The Pie Factory (formerly Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory) where they do the most unusual food, especially pies. They do a Desperate Dan Pie complete with pastry horns!

ixion Fri 18-Feb-22 19:46:13

No comics for us.
It was the Children's Newspaper

tidyskatemum Fri 18-Feb-22 19:19:43

DD did some PR work in Thailand for a bloke who used to do a lot of the interviews in Jackie. Apparently he made a lot of them up!

Esmay Fri 18-Feb-22 19:13:16

Bunny and Judy .
One or both had a cut out wardrobe for a paper doll .

I thought that it was marvellous despite being a tomboy ,who wore jodhpurs all the time !

Then , there was Jackie ,which my mother thought completely unsuitable and banned it .

Petticoat came out and I'd learned to be devious and hide it !

I was allowed to read Sunny Stories. A little comic book in the 1940s made up of short stories written by Enid Blyton. I bought School Friend when I was at High School in the 1950s My daughter's read Twinkle.

MissAdventure Fri 18-Feb-22 18:35:44
