Do we need the monarchy in this day and and age?

Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

There is absolutely no reason all the pomp and ceremony surrounding the RF (which is what the tourists really come to see) shouldn't continue without a monarch. We could add a few more things as well, perhaps a president's day or a Democracy day to celebrate the date the RF ends.

Agree

Yes, Lisawl, you are right. The monarchy are very much a part of our history and culture and they do attract tourism.
Long may they do so, in a slimmed down way.

How about this?

How close are the royals to the Russia oligarchs?

Prince Charles charity link to Russian offshore network

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47441113

The web of more than 70 offshore companies is exposed in a leak of 1.3 million confidential bank transactions to the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), a consortium of east European investigative journalists who shared information and documents with the BBC and the Guardian.
Between 2009 and 2011 the Prince's Charities Foundation received three payments, adding up to $202,000 via a now-defunct bank in Lithuania.
The leaked bank data show the last of the payments went to an account held by the Prince's Charities Foundation.
The payments were from a company called Quantus Division Ltd, which is revealed today to have been part of a network of offshore companies that sent billions of dollars out of Russia.

And this is odd.

This is odd, and doesn't really explain what's happened here. The Speaker has confirmed that there is no reason MPs can't debate the issue.

Whoops sorry for making Jamaica a republic- Grany is correct, it’s barbados

Grany Sat 26-Feb-22 16:44:05

The commonwealth should ditch the Royals the queen not involved in the running of it. She asked that Charles take over from her even though the job's not hereditary, nepotism. It's just the RF way of seeming relevant. The modern Commonwealth now has 54 nation states any country can apply to join.

Jamaica is not a republic but is well on the way to be like Barbados recently has, more surely to follow.

I’m now going to lie down to get over the shock of agreeing with Grany!?.

The Queen has a genuine commitment to the commonwealth. Jamaica is a republic. It was build as a British colony on the back of slaves. I’d say yes to a visit if the focus was commemorating the shared history and educating the racists in the UK who complain about ‘immigrants’ from former colonies.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 26-Feb-22 12:39:21

Ukraine or not, life goes on and if a Commonwealth country is considering becoming a republic and refuses to follow the usual practice of paying for a royal visit why should UK taxpayers pay for it?

I hope the visit will be cancelled. We shouldn’t foot the bill for a visit to a country which presumably doesn’t want it to happen.

I agree

I agree too. It’s hardly appropriate with the situation in Ukraine .Of course, it could always be seen as a distraction for something about to be disclosed elsewhere couldn’t it?

Thank you GSM Commonwealth realms usually pay for these trips, as they represent their own head of state (whereas we pay for royal trips to other countries). Well done #Jamaica This means the UK will pay for this pointless exercise while Jamaica debates becoming a republic.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 26-Feb-22 10:33:40

This has to be a first - I am agreeing with Grany about something concerning the monarchy. If Jamaica refuses to pay for the visit then I see no reason why we should.

#BREAKINGNEWS: The #Jamaica government says it will not be paying for the expected Royal visit of Britain's Prince William and his wife, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

#BREAKINGNEWS: The disclosure was made by Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, Robert Morgan at a post cabinet press briefing.

Jamaican Government must cancel this visit. A complete shame and desecration of our history.

The overstretched "UK" taxpayers will be paying for it, we're the royals cash cow, we pay for their homes, holidays, food, clothes, cars, boats, rape payoffs you name it we pay it.

I've been to Montecito. Not their house, obviously. It's lovely there. But now we're making silly jokes about where they live. It's like dealing with toddlers.

Then there they were - gone!!

It wasn't grand enough , Old Megsie wanted a 'Castle' address. Not enough bathrooms either, they have 16 in 'Monteshito'

I totally agree with the ‘monarchists’! If we did away with the Royal family who would we replace them with. Worth every penny. We could get a ‘Boris’, god forbid

Oh…didn’t you forget Blair Corbyn Trump and Putin?
