You're going to need a bigger spade.
The main room in your house...
Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

‘Celebrations of’ is distinguished from ‘the Nov 11th parade …’. Note the comma. You wouldn’t say ‘the celebrations of the Nov 11th parade in honour of those who died’. You don’t celebrate a parade.

So you would all prefer to have the likes of Adolf Putin, and from the past, Idi Amin and other well known dictators, around your necks, and be rid of all the income from tourism that comes to these British Isles. Perhaps you would also like to get rid of the present celebrations of, say, the November 11th parade in honour of those who died for you in the cause of freedom.
Do please stop whingeing. This post does not refer to ‘celebration’ on Remembrance Day. Read it again carefully, note exactly what was said and apologise to the poster.

Really?
My father, like others mentioned, never thought being Parade Commander was any kind of "celebration"

My late father would be deeply offended if he thought remembrance had become CELEBRATION. He fought in the war as did all my uncles one didnt come back ,the rest came home with physical or mental disabilities .War is not something to celebrate ,I suspect Boris sees the Ukraine as his CHURCHILL moment ,he'll be wetting himself with excitement
Remembrance day and Poppies have become increasinly politicised over the past couple of decades ,as have the Armed forces. Not something any of us should be happy about
It's funny how many people attribute culture and history to "our" RF. They are of course German, and their history only goes back just over 200 years. They even had a German name until 1917 when they took the name Windsor.
What would fill the vacuum?
Vacuous celebrities? Noooo!
The Royal family is our culture and history. It will change with the generational changes.

I never knew that the ceremonies on November 11th were meant to be celebrations I grew up believing them to be deeply sad and moving services of remembrance for all the people whose lives were cut short through war. I still remember the sound of the Last Post echoing through a silent school and my teachers standing with bowed heads in silent grief. Perhaps if they have become celebrations they should go. That's certainly not what those who had lived through 2 wars intended them to be.
Oh yes, it was the Ukrainians fault that their neighbour is a war-mongering psychopath, I forgot.
or Frogmore for H and M.
Then there they were - gone!!

I'd quite like somebody like the President of Ukraine in charge.
Stop being ridiculous.
He has high ideals and wanted change , but his lack of understanding and experience of politics has plunged his country into invasion and war.
Perhaps you will stand for president Grany.

RF don't bring in tourists other places have more visits charities do not benefit from royal patronage says an independent report from Giving Evidence.
RF have plenty of time on their hands say 30 odd public appearances in 90 days is not work. They have plenty of incessant publicity propaganda about what is done. An impression is created that Royals are always doing something official.
The monarchy fails to represent and defend the national interest against misgovernment.
RF cost a fortune and both queen and Charles vet laws to protect their private interests
We could do a lot better our own Elected Head of State
I feel very angry about being told that I don't honour the people who died for our freedom. I've watched my father lead remembrance day parades for 40 years, I know more about them than you might even imagine.
They didn't die so that we could shut up and accept whatever the status quo is without advocating for change if we think change is the right thing.
Wanting an elected HoS isn't treason, it's a perfectly valid position to take that grown ups should be happy to discuss. If the people don't want it, fair enough. But I'm not going to sit down and shut up because a bunch of nameless people on social media think I'm not deferential enough.

I do admire the Queen very much. She is doing an amazing job. Maybe not such a good mother I hate to say. Maybe if she had her time over again things may have been different. I don't respect the rest of them as I used to. I admire Kate and William, they have got it right. Its hard not to judge others in the family, we all have faults in our own family's. But I think of late they have put a very large crack in the wall that is obvious to the world. Maybe others stepping up as Princess Anne is and has always done might just keep the ball rolling along. Who knows, it will be interesting.
I used to like the Queen and thought she was a very hardworking person. Then I'm reading in the press that she's funding Andy with his compensation payment.
Now I love my adult DC very much but I certainly wouldn't help fund a payoff to get them off the hook and avoid court for the crimes he was accused of.
Infact as he was BFF with the original couple and they were regularly visiting him at Royal residences is that the sort of people Queen is happy to have in her Palaces? I may be odd but that shower wouldn't darken my door. And I think I would disown a son like him not pay his debts.
A president would cost a lot less? Proof?
Well I suppose the President would turn out to be one of the rich -and he wouldn’t be sharing his wealth with us either!
Blossoming
No, but many people regard them as a familiar fixture in their lives. This can be important in troubled times, especially for the older generation who don’t like change. Elizabeth 2 has been the monarch for my whole life so a new monarch will seem odd. I think it’s an outdated anachronistic institution but suspect I’m very much in the minority on h Gransnet.
Not with me, I agree with you. I remember at school learning how they came about, land grabbers who made themselves "royal". The queen has done a good job as head of state but it has to end, all the grand homes and money. Even enough to pay to keep AirMilesAndy out of court. Let it fade
A President would cost a lot less than the system we have, did you know that there are 18 ...thats EIGHTEEN royals in Grace and favour homes and some of them have more than one .
Thats a lot of family we're supporting ! Your average president will have his official residence and his summer residence ,not hordes of folk with places or palaces that need refubished regularly...e.g Kensington Palace which cost millions for just one of the flats or Frogmore for H and M .
No we don’t need them. It’s a ridiculous set up in this day and age.
We just need an elected Prime Minister or President.
If we don’t have a monarch what do we put in place?l would not like to go the way of America (we could not afford it ) Russia ? China ? Our Queen does not dictate policy and whatever it cost it brings in 3 fold to the economy
We would not financially be any better off if anything the stability of the country would be worse
Well we've already got Trump Lite as Prime Minister, does anyone really believe we would do any better electing a head of state? I'm sure the country could function perfectly well without a monarchy but I don't think whoever replaces it is going to give up all the trappings that go with it.
Callistemon
What is wrong with posters using the Irish system as an example of how voting for a President can work well?
Enough people keep citing Trump as a negative example.
It's important to have balance.
