Okay, it was suggested on a different thread that a new thread should be started about this, so here goes.
So do we need a monarchy today? That’s it really.

I shouldn't laugh, but...

metro.co.uk/2022/03/22/beenie-man-says-jamaica-dont-want-prince-william-amid-slavery-protests-16318277/

Sharing his thoughts on the controversy, Jamaican dancehall artist Beenie Man told Good Morning Britain: ‘If Harry was coming people would react different… people are going to meet Harry, but William.. we don’t want to see that.’

Good news!! ?

Not before time.

#JAMAICA: Jamaica will begin the process of removing the Queen as head of state “as soon as” William and Kate have flown home, according to a report. A source in the Jamaican government told ITV News that moves to make Jamaica a republic will start quickly.

LOL, William should've arrived with those reparations. Instead he expected to be treated like a King. LOL, another Diplomacy failure for the couple that ALMOST lost Scotland.

Jamaicans really waited for them to pack their bags and get in their private jet before letting them know how they really feel?

???Jamaica Govt will commence the removal of the Queen as Head of State once the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge leave.

#RoyalTourCaribbean is an utter failure. Times have changed and the tide has turned. This #PlatinumJubilee tour is tone deaf.

British Monarchy faces a reckoning.

Grany Tue 22-Mar-22 11:23:46

The queen has very little to do with the commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is an association of countries across the world. Although historically connected to the British Empire, any country can apply to be a member of the Commonwealth, regardless of its intersection with Britain's colonial past. The Commonwealth consists of 54 countries, including the United Kingdom.

The commonwealth does not need the RF.

The monarchy is undemocratic.

Parsley3 Tue 22-Mar-22 10:11:04

The Commonwealth has always been very important to the Queen and she has dedicated much of her time travelling to the various countries. She speaks of it often in her speeches. Perhaps her descendants will be more enlightened and will set free the ghost of British Colonialism. It is important to our understanding to read the open letter and hear the other side of the story.

Farzanah Tue 22-Mar-22 09:26:53

If the visit by D&D of Cambridge was intended to dissuade Jamaica from removing the Queen as head of state, as has Barbados, it has clearly backfired.
Surely the U.K. should welcome, and help the Caribbean nations to become truly independent and not tethered to Britain in the 21st century, and this should include reparation.
We cannot live in the past forever.

Grany you are sometimes too extreme for me but I am with you 100% on this Caribbean tour. The dancing and chocolate headline was unbelievable.

It seems to me that people didn't want to demonstrate against the Queen because of the respect they have for her as a person, but when 2 people turn up and expect to have that respect and deference just because they are related to her, that's asking too much.

Good for the Belize and Jamaican people standing against this.

PECS Tue 22-Mar-22 08:39:33

No of course we don't! I do not wish harm to any 'royal' but they have had their day and need to quietly fade away. I go on holiday as a tourist to all sorts of places, no holiday is influenced by the presence or otherwise of a royal family. Tower of London, Buck House etc. will still be there to see even if the RF become just a load of ' ordinary ' aristos.

Grany Tue 22-Mar-22 08:33:41

Protesters were planning to make clear the couple were “not welcome” with a protest outside the British High Commission, with local activist Kay Osborne telling the Guardian: “We do not want them here. We reject the photo ops that will be staged here for the UK’s consumption.”

Grany Tue 22-Mar-22 08:30:42

Am absolutely loving what's going on in the Caribbean now. Jamaica is due to protests the visit of Kate and William. Good one them. They should get rid of the monarchy. No one needs it.

"William and Kate dance and taste chocolate during day two of Belize tour". And that ladies and gentlemen sums up exactly why these people have no relevance or place in our society today.

Agree Bridgeit

Perhaps it will be the beginning of changes , probably will need to be a gradual process

Farzanah Mon 21-Mar-22 19:44:01

Most of these arrangements are not concerned with what’s ethical but what’s political sadly.

Grany Mon 21-Mar-22 18:08:57

Agree, I've also thought so too nadateturb

It is unconscionable that enslavers have been compensated under the Slave Compensation Act (1837), with some payments converted into 3.5% government annuities which lasted until 2015, yet to date there has been no compensation paid to the descendants of enslaved Africans.

I've always thought so.

What would the reparations & atonements be ?

“We see no reason to celebrate 70 years of the ascension of your grandmother to the British throne because her leadership, and that of her predecessors, has perpetuated the greatest human rights tragedy in the history of humankind.”

Noting that William and Kate are “direct beneficiaries of the wealth accumulated by the royal family over centuries”, the letter urges the couple to “redefine the relationship between the British monarchy and the people of Jamaica”, starting by acknowledging the need for atonement and reparations.

Grany Mon 21-Mar-22 13:43:40

NEW: A protest is due to take place in #Jamaica on Tuesday as Prince William & Kate visit the country during their royal tour. Organisers have also penned an open letter to the monarchy calling for slavery reparations. More on this soon. #Jamaica60 #AdvocatesNetwork

Pretty strong wording from this Jamaican campaign against the royal visit. @AbolishTheMonarchy

@Gary36623569

Let’s be clear, William is patron of Fauna & Flora International, they are in a long running dispute with the villagers of Indian Creek, #Belize over communal land rights that were expunged by the British Crown. FFI have ignored the villagers concerns. #AbolishTheMonarchy

nadateturbe Sat 19-Mar-22 19:30:02

Agree. Well done!

Grany Sat 19-Mar-22 17:40:57

Their addiction to helicopters demonstrates their hypocrisy on climate change. They couldn’t even go without one to visit a sensitive sight in #Belize. Well done to the good people of Indian Creek for standing up to them #AbolishTheMonarchy

@JHiggslive
The Bahamas will absorb the costs of the royal visit including accommodations and meals for the couple and their staff.

Well done the people of Indian Creek. These tours are pointless and self serving, and usually cost local communities a lot. More people should tell them to stay away.
