The Nextdoor App - thoughts? ?

Hello
Yesterday I downloaded the Nextdoor app, and did all the necessary doings.

It’s not the first time I’ve done it; the previous time it mildly freaked me out and I deleted it.

I feel quite uncomfortable with my full name being on show; and I’ve been inundated by men (only men) wanting to ‘connect’.

I’ve had a pleasant chat with a lady regarding my need for a cleaner, so that’s one positive.

What are your experiences with Nextdoor?
Thank you smilebrew

I have tried unsuccessfully, several times, to unsubscribe from this. Has anyone managed to do this?

SachaMac Sun 27-Feb-22 12:30:49

Ive just received a letter promoting this in my area, I’d not heard if it before but one of my DD’s signed up and has already spotted people naively posting far too many personal details , full names, where they live how long they’ve lived there etc, a bit worrying. Also quite a few people trying to sell stuff including small pets!! I’m giving it a miss.

HurdyGurdy click the three dots at the bottom of the page; go into settings; go into my account.

You hopefully can cancel there.

But you will need to know your password.
I don’t know my password (I don’t actually recall setting one) and now it won’t accept the new password. ?

I get a weekly digest of posts, which to be honest, I rarely read. However, I've just had a look this morning and I was horrified to see that one person has posted asking for a recommendation with their full name, house number and road on his post..

Having read some of the comments here, I want to delete my profile, but I can't find anywhere on the website to do it. I can't even find proper details of my profile, as I seem to get stuck in a loop.

Is it like the Hotel California? You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

I have found it to be mildly informative but not great.

pce612 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:50:28

I did have it but found it clunky and awful to use so deleted it.

Scribbles
We had Streetlife here too it was good but when we were told
it was changing to Nextdoor,a few of us started the sign up process but when it started asking for real names and addresses Etc mostly everyone I knew deleted the app.
I felt like you I didn’t want my information to be public.
One of the local guys started a FB page just for our area similar to Streetlife. no one is allowed to join unless they can prove they live in the area but no last names or addresses it’s worked
very well

Doodledog I think that 4allweknow probably meant me

Ah, ok smile

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 11:35:45

And DH has never done social
media or anything like that.
The scamster just used our address and business name because he was aware of it as a neighbour

I've been on ours for quite a while. We get useful local info re road closures & that sort of thing & I've been very successful finding various tradespeople through it. There's plenty of junk on there but I just ignore it.

mimiEliza Sun 27-Feb-22 11:31:34

Not seen anyone use an identifying name on here! They are usually User names, which you can decide, non de plumè!

Nona4ever Sun 27-Feb-22 11:27:35

I’ve been a member for a while and have had a couple of good results from it. However I was told shortly after I joined that I should DEFINITELY not upload the app - just get the posts to my inbox. I deleted the app and some posts get through. I cannot for free life of me remember who told me this and what their arguments against the app were but it made perfect sense at the time. And I agree it is now less a site for useful info, bargains and local updates than a ranters’ corner, with people often airing their personal vendettas for all to share. It’s been hi-jacked.

hamster58 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:23:23

I think it's very useful for tradesperson recommendations and for selling or buying items, but I have never seen an address mentioned unless a person puts it in their posts, only an area. I also only use initials as that protects identity too. I have never been aware of anyone using it like a potential dating site!!

Doodledog In view of your previous experience do not feel you shouldn't be using these sites. I have a family member who is in cyber security analysis on an international basis and I am always being told to close the likes of Facebook, neighbourhood sites etc down. Nothing is safe, your DH already has experience of it. If your not comfortable, worried about what can happen, its telling you something.

Sorry, but I don't understand this post. My husband doesn't use SM at all, and I'm perfectly comfortable with how I use the sites I'm on.

Maybe you mean someone else?

FannyCornforth Sun 27-Feb-22 11:22:03

Mine is very boring.
Nothing seems to happen.
Folk post stuff and no bone replies.
I’d love to see a good argument on there !
(But considering how GN is at the moment; maybe not! wink)

sustar Sun 27-Feb-22 11:19:23

I'm disappointed in it after some years of use, and keep thinking it's time I left. Cumulatively it gives a very negative picture of our locality and is full of arguments between members, sometimes quite petty. A few weeks ago someone posted a message asking if people could for once stop complaining on the Nextdoor message board, and this led to numerous complaints about the poster daring to complain about people complaining, and so on ad infinitum. The thread is still going on! Since the pandemic started there have been quite a few anti-vaxx posts and disagreements - in an area with relatively low vaccination rates - and conspiracy theorists abound. In Nexdoor's favour I suppose it's useful to be warned of thieves in the area or suspicious people lurking in basements, and to receive official messages from local police and council. As well as to be informed about the numerous cats and dogs lost or found.

Grandmabatty Sun 27-Feb-22 11:17:47

My friend was 'invited' to join by someone she knew so she did. It turned out it was a fake invite. She has since discovered invitations going to neighbours purportedly from her. Seems very dodgy to me.

I’ve been active on Nextdoor for 4 years it’s great for keeping in touch with local community, for a whole manner of things. You need to change access to your name in settings. It definitely gets thumbs up from me.

fluttERBY123 Sun 27-Feb-22 11:13:54

You can give a false name. Addresses sometimes appear when needed but only a postcode and it says eg 60 - 94 Blog Street.

It's been great for me. Need a cat feeder or tomorrow a wheelchair? No problem, you will usually get offers.
Wondering what that big bang was last night at 12? Somebody will know. Some of the threads can be hilarious.

Nannashirlz Sun 27-Feb-22 11:07:24

Having just read up on it. I won’t be downloading it. It’s known for selling your personal details to others. So if your getting emails phone call from spam companies you know where they coming from. It’s got loads of bad feedback and up until nov last year your address was on view for all to see.

Next door app ? never heard of it.

Now you have. ?

Cossy Sun 27-Feb-22 11:01:04

I’ve certainly had no attempted “pick ups” (though I’m on LinkedIn as still working and I’ve had THREE attempts on there !) On our next door there have been some “lively conversations”, lots of services, groups and things for sake. I quite like it !!
