I don’t mean wolf whistles I mean men in the street whistling tunes
I always knew when my dad was nearly home as you would hear him whistling away as he cycled home from work
Even out in the garden pulling up weeds or mending a puncture he d be whistling
You never ever hear anyone now do you? I can’t remember the last time I heard a man whistle

My Dad taught me to whistle. He would whistle as he went off to work on his bike. I have an abiding memory of him cycling off up the road going to work one morning, the glowing tip of his cigarette the only thing visible, until he disappeared into the darkness.

I still whistle, but live with a superstitious man who thinks ladies shouldn't whistle.

What’s the phrase?

A whistling woman and a crowing Hen are no use to mice or men.

Something like that, back in the day

How weird this thread popped up when yesterday I mentioned to Mr A that I never heard anyone whistling anymore. Hearing someone whistling was to me like hearing a bird singing, or a child laughing, or seeing a sudden ray of sunshine. None of the men in my family whistled, but some neighbours did and I always knew who was nearby from their whistling.

A whistling woman, a cackling hen.
Is neither good for god nor men.

Thats what my nan used to tell me.

My dad was another whistler. I can see him now outside tinkering away with something or other. How I miss him.

Kalu

An elderly man would walk passed our house every morning whistling, mostly, 40’s songs as he and his dog strolled along to collect his morning newspaper. Sometimes I had an earworm for a while if I recognised the tune.

Sadly I haven’t heard him since covid arrived. ?

Oh Kalu, that's sad. I hope he just chose another way to go but it sounds more like Covid got him. So very sad!

Don’t recall anyone in my family whistling. I think of that old rhyme every time I hear the woman next door whistling. Drives me mad.

My husband often whistles when he come in from work - I imagine because he's glad to be home. He also whistles when he's doing any jobs in his shed.

smile
That's lovely.

My OH spends a lot of time under his car ( it was built in 1937) but he never whistle’s.

Sorry to hear you have Covid BlueBelle if I could I would whistle a happy tune to cheer you up. thanks

Farzanah Wed 09-Mar-22 17:00:16

I like it because I assume people are happy when they whistle. People don’t seem so happy walking/ cycling around these days.

Nannarose Wed 09-Mar-22 17:33:15

My mother - who could whistle beautifully - I miss it so much - used to reply:
A woman that whistles, and a hen that crows
Brings good luck wherever she goes!

BlueBelle Wed 09-Mar-22 17:49:34

Thank you sodapop I m hearing it

All dead I hope. Whistling was of a bygone age but is something that sets my teeth on edge more than I care to remember.
Please, NEVER let whistling return.

MissAdventure Wed 09-Mar-22 18:10:54

I find it cheers me up when I can manage to whistle a whole song, with all the twiddly bits as well.
It's very satisfying.

My granny was extremely deaf for many years and she used to whistle tunes all the time. Very embarrassing in the theatre. ?
She had a hearing aid that whistled too (earpiece, whistling and crackling device on her chest and big batteries in a knitted bag in her bloomers).

MissAdventure Wed 09-Mar-22 18:20:03

grin
Like a one man band!

Mamie Wed 09-Mar-22 18:26:40

She was brilliant, my Granny. She had a huge repertoire of vulgar music hall songs and was an English champion in her chosen sport. ❤️

My dad was a whistler, especially in the garden and greenhouse.
When I got a tape recorder[giving my age away] I used to tape "Top of the Pops", and when playing it back we could hear him whistling in the garden. After that, on summer evenings he stayed quiet when he knew it was on.smile

The 3 year old boy I childmind can whistle! He tootles away round my house in a jolly mood ??

It drives the 4 year old boy nuts as, try as he might and I've done my best to explain, he can't work out how to do it ??

CanadianGran Wed 09-Mar-22 19:46:09

Teacheranne, I envy you! I have tried and tried but never mastered the two fingered whistle. Would have made me a proper hockey-mom, instead of clapping maddly.

I have worked with one man who whistled aimlessly all day and drove people crazy, and a woman (years later) that was the best whistler who would do popular songs without missing a note.

I agree it is a very rare thing to hear people whistling now.

I’ll take that ??

My mums next door neighbour was one of those people who whistled all day long; no start or end to the tune.

It drove mum mad!
