Good morning. A friend, male, turns 80 this month and want to get something to mark the occasion. But what. Don’t want to spend a lot so just a token gift really and like most of us there isn’t anything he needs. A jokey plaque has been suggested with his name , date of birth and interests on but then mixed opinions on them. Some people think they are more for someone who’s died ! So ladies, any suggestions please.

A voucher for something he likes? Gardening or craft gin or wine. If he's a foodie then a voucher for a meal. A newspaper from the day he was born.

Chocolates and flowers.

A gift of some kind with a photo of himself on ie a mug and coaster . You can get them online. Or places like Max Spielman have a good selection such as key rings etc.

If your friend is having a party, maybe club together with others to hire a private photographer to wander around and take photos of your friend enjoying time with his friends and then put all the photos together in a nice album afterwards.

We did this for Dad's 85th birthday party, and he absolutely loved it. From memory the cost of hiring the photographer who then sent all the photos to us as jpegs was around £150.

If you look on Etsy there used to be someone called Ellie who will find an old map of your friend's birth pace and use calligraphy, to show his name date and place of birth and she frames them. My friend was had a milestone birthday and thrilled with theirs.

If you do not want an expensive gift, how about a hydrangea or rose in a nice pot?

I recently bought my daughter’s Fil a customised mug with his name on it for a modest 80th birthday gift. He was delighted with it. It was around £10 on Amazon.

You could buy him a framed ‘word thingy’ which consists of words that are appropriate to him, as in places he’s lived, visited; interests; names of family members; words that characterise him etc.

Definitely NOT the plaque. I know of someone who received one & was dreadfully hurt. Anyway, where could one hang it? They’re not meant for external use.
If I was turning 80 I’d love a family meal, somewhere posh, served by properly trained staff and to top it off, a personalised cake for pudding with lots of candles.

Tammy at 1830 above has suggested something I’d love too.
The Meteorological Office in Exeter will reproduce a genuine framed weather forecast map for the date & day of birth too.

Not Tammy! I meant Yammy above!

Yes, Nonogran, but we all have our views. Personally, I’d like a lunch with family and friends at ‘The Ivy’.
