Mothers Day

My friend has asked her adult children not to buy her anything, but to donate the money, instead, to the DEC appeal for Ukraine.
Acknowledging mothers everywhere.

I want to ignore it, since my mother died in Feb.

Ours always go over the top present wise which is lovely. However a bunch of daffs would do me fine.

It’s never meant anything to me as my mother died when I was a child. I have AC and GC who want it to be a special day for me. I know I’m lucky in that way but grit my teeth and put on an act. Always glad when it’s over.

All my life my own mother demands that mothers day is her day she gave birth to me so must celebrate the day with her. I have grown-up children plus grandkids who want to spend time with me her reply is she gave birth to me so they wouldn't exist if it wasn't for her so I am expected to spend the day with her. I will spend time with her but when I say I am leaving I know the sulks will start or suddenly she is not feeling well. She has been like this all my life on any family occasion she has to be the centre of attention she isn't going to change now she is in her 90s.

I will get cards from both of mine, but nothing else, mainly because I do not want anything else and they know it.

My children were brought up to believe that MD was a silly American practice and that every day was MD (dream on!). However, in their free thinking adulthood, they've both opted to send me a text. Suits me.

Mothering Sunday, as it is called in the UK, was based on a church ritual of returning to your ‘mother’ church and reuniting with family. It’s not an American idea.

I always give my mum something. She’s a widow without siblings and doesn’t have many people who ‘treat’ her nowadays, so a gift to bring her some cheer seems an ok thing to do.

I’ve asked my dc not to give me anything beyond a card or text this year. I’m trying to declutter and don’t need to have to find homes for anything new! I’ve suggested a donation to a Ukrainian charity, if they feel they want to do something.

My kids always get me cards and presents and I love it. We usually go out for a nice lunch too. I don't see a problem with this, it's just a nice day for kids to show their love and appreciation and for mums to enjoy.

I enjoy mother's day , seeing my AC and GC. However I enjoyed it even more as a daughter rather that a mother. Since my mother died a long time ago mother's day he as never felt the same. I miss her more on mother's day than on her birthday. Having said that I am me left with wonderful memories!

2 of my ‘kids’ are Mothers also, I encourage them to spend time with their own grown up children some of whom are also Mothers ? but they usually pop in with a card and a plant or flowers. I’m not bothered about MD a text would be fine.

Its just the same as Valentines day, i think its so commercialised. My son lives abroad so he rings me which is all i want and my daughter buys a card, i always tell her not to buy me a thing. I do not jump on the bandwagon haa, may sound a bit harsh.

I always got my mum a card, she knew I LOVED HER SO MUCH every single day and i ALWAYS bought her flowers so when MD arrived, it was just another day.

Its just nice to enjoy the day together...me , my mum, my 3 kids and 3 GC.... Nice roast cooked by my son and son in law.... walk on the beach....chill at home....I will get the same presents I get every year...a candle....an orchid and some chocolates....the day's not about just me... my mum and my DD are mothers too...so its about us all

I am not bothered about Mother's Day and never have been. I get my mum a card. My daughter is hosting an afternoon tea for me, her grandma and her great aunt the Saturday before as she likes to acknowledge it. I think it's really sweet of her, but it wouldn't bother me if she did nothing. I look on it as overly commercialised

Every year the women in my family go out for a mother's day meal.
My mother, myself and my daughter.
So 3 generations of women. My mil used to come as well but she sadly passed away last year.

I was about to say the same thing, SueDomin! USA, Canada and Australia celebrate Mothers' Day on the second Sunday in May, unconnected with the Christian church's year.

I want to ignore it too Gagajo having lost my mum 18 months ago and being estranged from our youngest son. All the tv ads make ignoring it rather difficult though.

I’m happy with a card from my DDs with strict instructions not to pay silly money for flowers! I’ve a March Birthday (thanks for the greeting LauraN) so plenty of flowers here already.
As both DDs are Mothers themselves now - I hope they’ll spend most of their time with their own boys. I’m not fussed if they don’t visit on ‘The Day’ either - it’s more important to me that I fit in with them, not the other way round.

I shall be telling mine - or rather getting dh to do it - that in case they were thinking of buying me anything, please donate to the DEC instead.

Not that I think they’ll need telling. Dd1 works in the humanitarian sector and has just recently been asked whether she can provide any assistance for Poland.

M D is usually around the same time as DH's birthday so we have a family get-together around now for that.

Since my own children now have children of their own I encourage them to spend the day as their own family time. This year DH and I will be travelling 200-odd miles to have a 'bring-your-own-sandwich' lunch with my mum.
GCn will make a card I hope but otherwise really not at all bothered by it for myself - certainly not going out for an overpriced 'treat'!

My mother and MIL both expected gifts and attention but rarely enjoyed either but they are both long gone.

Happily DD1 sends me flowers and DD2's husband is cooking lunch for us and we will have a good old natter which is all I need.

We used to go out for a family meal, but now that we have young grandsons, 3 of them with birthdays in late March/early April, Mothering Sunday will just be an afterthought at one of the parties. All the mums in the family, including me, will get presents, but they know I’d be more than happy with a card.

I don’t find it embarrassing though, not at all.

I’m not bothered about it, I’ve ordered my daughter flowers and Prosecco to be delivered, she deserves it.
