Hating Spring

I've just been reading an interesting thread on Mumsnet about people who dread Spring.

This was me for many years and I thought I was just odd. I just hated the feel that the cosy days of Winter were over and you had to start wearing lighter clothes, being seen to be out and about enjoying yourself, and basically being more visible to the world.

As I got older and more comfortable in my own skin, all that changed and I now enjoy the change in the light, nature coming to life, getting out and mowing the grass, and just the change in pace that Summer brings. Also I haven't worked in a City for many years which helps. Most city centres look quite drab during Summer I think.

Just wondering how many of you dislike Spring, or struggled when younger and less secure to feel you met all its expectations?

I like all of the seasons except the very, very hot days of Summer. I love being cosy in front of the fire but I also love swimming in Summer. We don’t have the really short days here, earliest it gets dark is around 5.30pm in Winter but we also don’t get those really lovely long, sunny evenings. It gets dark just before 9 pm in Summer.

Must be some weird ideas expressed on Mumsnet.
For the vast majority Spring has heralded new birth, light, warmth, fertility, crops, food, down the ages. Not to mention the effect of sunlight on our Vit D levels and serotonin.
Which makes fear of getting one’s legs out a rather superficial 21st century issue!confused

Different people like different seasons I suppose. It's a bit more nuanced than fear of getting one's legs out. I imagine personality type, associations with certain times of the year and even things like seasonal allergies can make different times of the year difficult for different people to cope with.
People who dislike Spring are possibly in the minority, but I don't think they're odd.

Summer for me, don’t mind the heat (family myth claims Italian ancestry). Spring is lovely to look at but there is often a bite in the air.
First lockdown I cycled and walked our local sand dunes to death in the good weather. Still with restrictions the next year did nothing of the sort, went off the whole idea.
Sometimes in low spirits, the long hot sunny days can depress me as I feel I should be out and about doing active outdoor stuff when I feel like hibernating and have no excuse.

I love this time of year when the garden is starting to wake up after winter. I'm much happier when the sun shines and on a practical note the energy savings will help. Goodness knows how much it will cost when our fixed rate ends.

I LOVE spring and summer always have, always will
i can’t imagine how any one could hate the start, the flowers and trees coming to life, the hope of longer days of brightness and warmth, the beginnings and lthe shine of the future

Totally agree

Autumn is my favourite season but there's no denying that the brighter sunshine, earlier mornings, longer evenings, birds singing and flowers coming out do cheer one up immensely.

You also find out how dirty your windows are and keep discovering cobwebs in dark corners. But fortunately the new surge of life out there gives you the energy to tackle them (or the cheerful state of mind to tolerate them!)

I know what you mean, Beswitched. I do like the spring now, but used to hate it. My natural inclination to hide away is much easier in winter, and I do feel somewhat exposed by lighter evenings and wearing less clothes. But I have learned to appreciate spring now and look forward to warmth and light.

I love all the seasons, but summer is my favourite. I also love May & June when we get the most light in the evenings.

I enjoy all the seasons for what they offer. Spring is a herald of hope for warmer weather with flowers bursting through. Summer offers warmth and lazy days pottering in the garden. Autumn has the busyness of animals and birds preparing for winter and wonderful colour and winter has snow, ice and dark dropping early. We can snuggle in and enjoy the anticipation of Christmas and New Year. My favourite seasons are the moderate ones of spring and autumn.

Spring is lovely because of the flowers and the birds.

I find the Summer so interminably boring when the groups I attend and their outings close down.

Autumn is THE best season, there is nothing to dislike about it.

And I quite like Winter, I enjoy the dark nights and the cosiness, the comfort food, etc. Being inside and warm when the rain is lashing down outside (don't know whether 'warm' will happen again with the heating bills shooting up, though)

Apology BlueBelle, I hadn’t intended to quote you , not sure how how that happened,

I adore summer it’s the time of year when I come alive and feel I have blood in my veins and can get some rays in my cold body Spring is lovely because it’s the fore runner of summer with all the things starting to grow and come to life but pretty though autumn is it’s sad for me because it tells me the longest and most depressing time is beckoning me into it’s cold darkness

My favourite seasons are spring and autumn. Not too happy with extremes of temperature! Love spring and all it brings , but autumn sunshine and colour is glorious too. Winter and summer have their good points , but to be honest I am just glad to be here and witness the four seasons - love the music too!

Our Oxfordshire house had a big wisteria growing up it, which was beautiful, but the scent gave me massive headaches so I had to shut windows that were normally open all the time – so stressful!

Baggs Sat 19-Mar-22 09:20:09

A wet winter, like the one we've just had, is my least favourite season. It's just too dark for too long, like all day when really overcast. A freezing cold, sunny winter is fine.

Wearing thinner clothes doesn't start till late May/early June here, if then. Might shed a 'clout' (=cloth, i.e. layer) on occasions before then, possibly today when I'm cutting logs ? ?

What on earth are “cosy days of winter”?! I guess you didn’t grow up without central heating or adequate warm clothes. I absolutely love Spring and the lengthening days, blossoming trees and birds going full blast. But not as much as I love Summer.

No I didn't. I imagine lots of people find winter a cosy time of year. I've often heard people use that expression. It's quite common.

Marmight Sat 19-Mar-22 08:48:25

I love all the seasons but if push came to shove I would choose Spring as my fav. During the first lockdown, Spring was glorious & I walked alone round the lakes & through the woods near my house taking lots of photos and inhaling the newness of everything. By the next year, still in lockdown, everyone, their dog and their granny had discovered ‘my’ walk and the peace and calm was shattered.
Everything is in bud now, the sun is out today and I’m excited for the next stage.
(This was my Dad’s favourite poem)

argymargy Sat 19-Mar-22 08:45:37

I struggle with Winter but at my time of life I’m very conscious of not wishing the days away. I’ve really tried to find things to love about the winter months. So far I’ve come up with early daffodils and bright frosty mornings. ?

lavendermine Sat 19-Mar-22 08:38:36

Don't like a hot Summer, but am glad to see Spring after the long Winter we have had here.

Aveline Sat 19-Mar-22 08:36:09

I'm another happy hibernator. I really don't like it when the clocks go forward.

Chestnut Sat 19-Mar-22 08:34:58

It's extreme temperatures I don't like, either sub zero or a heatwave. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often here. In May everything is growing like crazy and the leaves have beautiful fresh green leaves which I love. So I'm a Spring and Summer person, don't like the dark gloomy days of winter.

Urmstongran Sat 19-Mar-22 08:30:59

The only dilemma I have about springtime are concerns about what to wear! The sun might be shining one day but then a bitter wind whips up. Layers are my friend at this time of the year!

argymargy Sat 19-Mar-22 08:15:04

That’s lovely, @Aldom

Aldom Sat 19-Mar-22 08:09:39

Spring is a lovely lady, her gown is green and gold,
And underneath her flying feet the sleepy buds unfold,
The music of her laughing voice goes ringing down the lane,
The silver trumpet of the wind takes up the happy strain.
This is how it is for me, but I realise it's not the same for everyone. smile flowers

BlueBelle Sat 19-Mar-22 07:58:02

None I don’t think argymargy I was born the very start of March into very cold weather and the warmer the summer the better for me My Dad was always out in the garden bare chested digging and gardening and was born end of November
