Just thinking back to my first plane trip. It was in 1967 and we all had to sit at the front because of ‘weight distribution’ and it went over to Beauvais. Cheap as chips .
My most recent was to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and we got the very last plane back before they locked down for a couple of years because of Covid. I’m about to go on a plane again to Norfolk Island and feel quite nervous.

Heathrow to Paris in 1962 on a Comet . There had been a Comet crash the week before, so I was rather nervous. Love flying, but hate airports. Can't see us making another trip in the forseeable

My first trip by plane was to Barbados. My last plane trip was to Madeira in 2002.

I remember stopping in Bahrain en route to Australia many years ago. The plane had something wrong with it so we were stuck in the airport for 8 hours. No aircon, no decent food and we had a couple of babies with us. One of them puked all over an airport official. Happy days.

Am I the earliest flyer? It was 1952 New York to Los Angeles by TWA Constellation. I was 2 years old.

My first flight was to Berlin in 1964, it was quite a pleasant flight, DM was petrified watching the wings go up and down.
My last was to Spain in 2018, I vowed never to fly again and I won't.
A 24 hour flight from Singapore in 1971 was my worst, we were surrounded by people with food poisoning, luckily we'd both been asleep when the food was bought round.

1963 Bermuda, aged 11, on the way to reunite with dad who had a job with Texaco oil refinery in Trinidad . Never forget Bermuda, the beautiful beach, hair dryer air, and we were allowed off the BOAC plane for refreshments back then. Next stop was Antigua with a drink that tasted like calamine lotion. Next stop was Barbados, where I started to feel unwell. Mum stayed on board looking after my two year old sister and I remember being convinced the plane would take off without me. The cabin crew took me to a cool room until I felt better. We took off but due to a storm, had to return to Antigua before finally arriving in Trinidad where dad was waiting for us and we stayed overnight in the Hilton upside down hotel where I had my first prawn cocktail. It was all so exciting.
My last flight was to the village in Spain where we owned a property for 20 years and lived for 10 years. That was October 2021. Hoping to fly soon. Had scary flights like many of you but also a flying lesson so on top of my fears. I found it easier than approaching a slip road on a motorway as no other traffic.

My first flight was to Tunisia, more than 50 years ago. The airport was new and whilst we were waiting for our luggage a flight landed from Mecca. It was a very foreign atmosphere - the wives were waiting for their husbands and ululating. The mens' luggage came off the carousel in old kit bags or tied up in shawls and I'd never seen anything like it before.

My first time in a plane was from Sydney to Darwin in 1954 when I was 5.
Qantas/B.O.A.C about 40 on board including big American cigar smoking businessmen. I was terribly airsick and barley-sugar and bananas were given out to us kids..
We were on our way to England but there were many refuelling and overnight stops: Jakarta, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Beirut and Zurich.
I remember Darwin with wallabies jumping about very near the airport. It was very exciting. The airline gave us B.O.A.C. bags too. I kept mine for years.
The most recent air trip will have been to Copenhagen in 2019 for my niece's wedding.
Good luck going to Norfolk Island nanna8

My first flight was in April 1958 from Mombasa to Dar-es-Salaam in a Dakota 7.

The last flight I was on was to Porto before a river cruise on the Douro, September 2019.

When we took our gd, age 9 on her first plane trip she was really worried....... about what would happen if we met a bunch of angels when we were flying. My reply, was don't worry the pilot will sound his horn and they will all fly onto a cloud. We can then wave at them!

1958 aged eight I boarded a small private plane in Fiji, where my dad was a mining engineer, with eight other children and no accompanying adult to go to boarding school in Brisbane. Flew back and forth each term.
Last was Liverpool to Bergerac, we then sold up our French house and drove home to Anglesey.
Hopefully the next and last will be a return trip to Australia to see our third son and his family.

Oh, I forgot. The most travel sick, a 10 seater from Albuquerque to Alamogordo (New Mexico, USA). I've never been on such a violently bumpy flight. I was SO ill the whole plane had to pass me their sick bags, and so ill I wasn't even able to be scared from the turbulence. I was in bed for 2 days afterwards.

First flight (I can remember) when I was 4. To Africa.

Most recent flight, coming back to the UK from Switzerland.

Longest flight, to China (13 hours).

Worst flight, one of the engines was failing. Had to turn around and return to departure airport.

Most unusual flights, military. One, with only a small section of the plane for passengers (10 seats). The rest was cargo. Two, sitting on jump seats down the sides (as if in combat). Three, seats faced backwards. Felt weird, with the thrust pushing us forward slightly. All going to the USA.

Smallest, a 4 seater from the UK to Germany.

And all of this with a flying phobia that I have spent thousands trying (and failing) to overcome.

First when I was 5 to Lagos,
Last one was just under, days under 2 years ago. We had been visiting our DD in Sydney, flew to Perth to visit an old friend the. Got locked in a hotel room when we arrived at our hotel and stayed locked up until we managed to get a flight back via Doha. We were booked with Cathy Pacific but HK had stopped admitting transit passengers so we had to find a flight back with help from Trailfinders. Thank you Gabrielle!
Will go to Sydney again next year, DD is arriving here in May.

First, around 1974: Moscow.
Most recent, though a while ago: Stuttgart

Cabbie21 Mon 21-Mar-22 19:46:55

My first flight was also to Beauvais, back in the 60ies.
My most recent was from Manchester to Vienna / return for a choir tour.
I am unlikely to fly again but I am not ruling it out completely.

My first flight was in 1964/5 with Britannia Airlines from Manchester to Rimini I think. I’d never even dreamed of going abroad but it started my love for hot beach holidays. My parents never flew, went abroad or had a passport and I feel so sorry that we never even thought about bringing mum with us once! It was a prop job and took hours and hours. My last one was five weeks ago from Manchester to Faro and we are back home on one tomorrow! Hope the weather is still good, even in the north west because it’s been terrible in Portugal for weeks, I’m frozen!

foxie - how lovely. I’ve had a couple of Mum/daughter holidays. It was really lovely. I’m waiting for her to ask me again - she’s not in the best of moods atm (long story) - so I doubt it ?
Have a lovely trip to Lisbon….been there with my brother and s.I.l. Lovely city …

MissChateline Mon 21-Mar-22 19:08:53

1957 my dad was posted to Malta and we flew from some airforce base. I remember nothing about the flight but I do remember the ghastly inoculations prior to the flight.
Most recent flight was august 2020 to la Palma to visit my wife. Cut short the trip as everything started to shut down again.

foxie48 Mon 21-Mar-22 19:01:17

First flight was in 1956 to Jersey on holiday with my parents. Plane was a Dakota and we returned after taking off because of "magneto" trouble (whatever that was). My last trip was to Barcelona with my younger daughter for a lovely "city break" in 2019. We had a lovely time and are off to Lisbon in April for another mother and daughter trip.
