Another baby killed

Why do people think it’s wise to buy a dog when they have a baby/toddler
Presumable it’s a fairly big dog as the police who killed it are looking to see if it’s on the banned list so it’s obviously not a little lap dog
What a dreadful mistake, made so many times
That poor little baby girl must have suffered so much and now the family will be grieving for ever

What I meant was when they’re found the rescue usually say microchipped but the details are out of date. I’m not a fan of flat faced dogs, preferring pointy nosed ones, but I have a soft spot for boxers. Have you read Clare Baldings book My Animals and other Family? Boxers featured largely in her early life.

No I haven't I know she had boxers I will have to add it to my Kindle reading list thank you
Just off out I am looking after my daughters rottie and he needs a walk he is a cross with a lab and as daft as a brush but missing my grandaughter who he adores

Most rescue dogs seem to have details that are out of date. It’s also important the get your dogs chip checked every year as they can migrate round their body! I picked up two poo bags on the beach yesterday that someone had put on one side and forgotten to pick up. It infuriates me.

I have had two boxers both from rescues not sure if micro chipping was invented for my first but my second was from a local boxer rescue he was chipped but always had to be registered to the rescue. So if I didn't look after him properly and he was picked up the rescue would be informed.

They should be registered May. The irresponsible sell them on and the details aren’t changed

MayBee70 Thu 31-Mar-22 11:50:17

I think having to have your dog chipped is a sort of replacement for a dog licence. But even when you’ve had them chipped I don’t think you have to register them (I could be wrong).

Iam64 Thu 31-Mar-22 09:20:41

I’d be happy to pay dog licences but I read it’s not considered cost effective.
The police can’t keep up with drivers who have no licence or insurance. You can bet that group would continue to breed and sell puppies illegally and there wouldn’t be a licence in sight.
There was a notorious puppy farm locally. Well publicised campaigns to get it closed down, didn’t stop people buying unhealthy, poor specimens from the place. It was closed recently, as a direct result of campaigns by responsible dog owners

argymargy I don't think dog legislation needs funding through tax increases. There are 12.5 million dogs in the UK so it can be funded through the licence fee.

@Maybee has made very clear points about how we can better use the existing systems and controls - and yet others persist in saying we need new laws. We all know that enforcement, not legislation, is the issue with many of our society’s current challenges. Realistically no-one is going to vote for tax increases to fund dog wardens etc etc. when there are so many other more pressing problems affecting our communities.

MayBee70 Thu 31-Mar-22 00:16:19

I don’t think you need a study. I’m pretty sure that it will throw up the same breed of dog and a similar profile of family. Which is why I still maintain it’s a social problem.

Chestnut Thu 31-Mar-22 00:00:36

Luckygirl3 I guess you'd have to Google to find out the latest study. I'm no expert, just came across the 1998 study by chance.

Luckygirl3 Wed 30-Mar-22 22:34:10

Chestnut - thank you for posting that. Do you know if there has been a subsequent study?

It does not really seem to cover general nuisance.

I think a new study is overdue as many of the problems seem to have increased - particularly out-of-control breeding. And the recent spate of deaths should be an impetus for this.

Thanks for that link Chestnut. Very interesting.

Chestnut I don't think anyone who has commented on this post has said anything to indicate they would rather have children killed than agree to proper dog controls. That is totally unfounded and unfair.

There has been balanced discussion and everyone - whether pro or anti dog - has been horrified about the attacks on the poor children and thoroughly behind better controls on dogs, owners, breeders, sellers, walkers and trainers.

Absolutely right Coastpath all the responsible dog owners will agree that there needs to be stronger regulation of breeding and ownership.

Chestnut Wed 30-Mar-22 17:20:37

Absolutely heartbreaking (yet again) Tickingbird.

This might be an interesting read, where an increase in dog attacks is mentioned as far back as 1998:
Research Paper on Dogs 1998

The two year old boy bitten in Worcester by three dogs has now died. Just horrific.

PECS Wed 30-Mar-22 10:16:42

I think true dog lovers do support tighter controls. It is dog exploiters that don't want them!
Dogs are expensive to keep. There are far too many dogs ..especially in dog shelters & being euthanased because they are unwanted.

We need to limit breeding..both legal & illegal...

I never accused anyone on this thread of anything!

But there is a 'dog brigade' who will fight tooth and nail to stop licensing and anything they see as anti-dog. I never said any posters here are like that, but there are such people.

Luckygirl3 Tue 29-Mar-22 21:38:53

I don't like the phrase "dog brigade" and have not used it.

I am not aware of any dog lovers of my acquaintance who have taken action about getting some proper legislation in place to try and resolve this situation - but if there are people on the case with it then I am delighted to hear that.

I think there needs to be a proper government study and a white paper leading to tight enforceable legislation with teeth in place. No-one can possibly want to see the continuation of fatal attacks and injuries and dog nuisance.

One of the difficulties with progress is that often bringing up the subject results in more than a little flack as dogs are an emotive topic.

We have a dog warden who responds within hours to emails or phone messages. He visits, takes your complaint and acts. A neighbour has not spoken to me since I reported her aggressive dog and she was warned that because of previous complaints she’d be taken to court if there was another report. She got 1-1 training for her and the dog -no further problems

Out CSO works closely with residents and the dog warden
Their hands are tied

Lucky what makes you assume the ‘dog brigade’ aren’t already campaigning, in touch with councilors and mp’s. Many of us are, as well as supporting charities or the kennel club in its efforts

Jody1234 Tue 29-Mar-22 19:47:17

Yes, I understand that Bluebelle. I suppose the answer is to ring the council and find out what is available in the area you live in.

BlueBelle Tue 29-Mar-22 19:41:30

Jody as I said before Dog wardens were removed from my area a few years ago and they no longer exist here obviously each area spends its money on what it considers necessary and it seems the large area I live in has got rid of them

MayBee70 Tue 29-Mar-22 19:35:44

Thankfully she wasn’t hurt because DH had his walking boots on and kicked it off. It had almost killed another dog the week before though which hadn’t been reported which is why I feel so strongly that all dog attacks should be reported. The man from the council was the most helpful one though as he was an ex policeman and I got the impression that he had dealt with dog attacks ( I could be wrong). But no one seems to realise that these community safety officers exist.

Jody1234 Tue 29-Mar-22 19:21:38

I agree with you Maybee all situations regarding dog attacks should be reported. I did mention further up the thread that the Dog Warden should be brought into these situations but was told that they no longer existed.

I don't understand where you say "it was my nasty horrible dog that was attacked and not a person".

No on one this thread has disputed that something needs to be done, we are all in agreement with that.

I am sorry your dog was attacked what a dreadful thing to happen. I can understand how upsetting it was for you. Legislation should be brought in, I agree with you, but I think the policing of it, as Jaberwok has mentioned, could be problematic.

I hope your dog is better and has recovered.
