This wasn't the first time that Rock had made Smith and his wife the butt of his "jokes"; he's been asked, several times to leave Jada Pinkett Smith out of it both on stage and online but, as with all bullies, he just carried on. Rock has been asked before why he's focused on JPS so much and his response was "I know I go too far sometimes but when I get up there, I just can't help it!" If you "can't help" being a bully, you'll get a smack sometimes to remind you. Seems fair.

Dunno what's behind it all FannyCornforth but it goes back a long way; certainly as far as 2016 apparently. I'd guess that jealousy is the basis of it, it usually is. Smith is far more successful and popular than Rock.

And for what it's worth, I don't think that the ethnicity of either man had anything to do with last night's event. This was just 2 adult men; one of whom has made the wife of the other man the butt of his jokes for too long and got a smack for it. Colour of their skin is irrelevant.

Yes it was a terrible "joke" but violence wasn't the way to deal with it. Will Smith is a clever man and I am sure he could have made a cutting remark during his acceptance speech - and if he hadn't won he would have had ample opportunity later to say something.

Of course, it could be following the previous comments Rock had made added to being anxious as to whether he had won or not the "joke" was the final straw and he just lost it - although I think in that case he would have punched Rock rather than slap him.

Some comedians think that anyone watching or in the audience is fair game.
Chris Rock was possibly unaware of why Jada's head was shaven, but really should have kept his mouth shut! How would he feel if a close relative was in the same situation and someone made a joke out of it?
I can't condone that Will Smith slapped him, but can understand why he did it.
Not 100% sure that it wasn't a set up though !

Well having watched the slap I'm a bit dubious about what really went on. The slap was the classic movie slap, designed to look really agressive but actualy quite harmless. In spite of WS apparently swinging his arm and putting his entire body behind the blow CR doesn't move at all and shows no sign of any facial injury. I think we need to remember that this is an action movie star trained to make fights look real.

It wasn't his feelings that Rock couldn't control; it was his mouth. And as we're constantly reminded, words matter, especially if you're on the receiving end of continual personal remarks about you or your loved ones made in public. Bullies rarely like the consequences of their actions and they make all manner of excuses for their behaviour, but sometimes, their victim has just had enough.

Turn the other cheek......What a cheek Chris Rock had using the ladys hair loss, bet peeps would not be so quick to defend Chris Rock and have a go at Will Smith if they were talking about cancer. I have had cancer many years ago so don't call me, I worked with a lady whose young granddaughter had alopecia, they were both suffering from anxiety, it was not very nice to watch the grandma every day so I say good on you Will, some people need it punched home.

Time to call a halt to this pathetic luvvie fest. To digress slightly I was appalled at the cost of the goody bags given to 'stars' that money could have been better used.

Jada has described her hair loss as 'terrifying'. I'm not sure her husband would take part in her further distress.

What an example to set to not only to the young people watching but to his adult children. Is this how you deal with a grievance? How you deal with hurt feelings? No, it's unacceptable and it's a slippery slope.

I agree that the presenter Chris Rock was setting an appalling example to everyone - verbal abuse and bullying is never acceptable even when it is supposedly a joke.

It's on a par with that revolting Frankie Boyle making jokes about a disabled child.

Totally unacceptable, it has become worse and worse despite disapproval as the so-called comedians then appear on prime time tv again as if their disgusting comments are acceptable.
The distress they can cause is immeasurable to people who may feel vulnerable; strong words and pleading does not stop them but perhaps this might just make Chris Rock think again.

I didn't see the event, and have no real interest in watching these self-absorbed, over-emotional individuals chuntering on - so I'll bow to your insight on the matter. You saw it, I didn't!

There was a lot of silence.
When Smith shouted at Rock from his seat, Smith had tears in his eyes.
He looked shocked himself at his own actions.
Having watched it a couple of times, I don’t think that it was planned.
And if it was, it didn’t go quite as they’d planned.
