I still think that the pair of them were coked up.
This isn’t going to go down well at all.
In spite of his ‘open marriage’ Smith has (had) a very wholesome image.
A well publicised spell in rehab beckons me thinks

I don’t believe it was staged. It was audible and looked and sounded a rather hard, open handed slap. If that had been a punch it would have probably caused some damage.

I like Will Smith and don’t believe he should lose his Oscar but I don’t agree that his actions are either acceptable or to be applauded.

More to the point - was his wife?

There are varying reports some say WS was at the rehearsal some he wasn't. But if you want the reason well it's obvious. Without the slap this event would have been over and forgotten by now. It's now front page and an industry worried about cinema attendance has had it's main event brought back to prominence.

Some newspapers are saying there was a rehearsal and Will Smith was there - but the offending joke was not included, seems Chris Rock added it without telling anyone.

I punched a man in the face decades ago,he had been spreading vile rumours about me and I marched into his office and punched him in the jaw.He sent the police round ,lovely policeman who said" the eegit has form for this and my advice is if you feel the need to repeat it make sure there aren't any witnesses.There are a long line of women who want to slap him so it might start a trend ".I asked if I would be prosecuted ..he said no I'll tell him I gave you a good talking to.
Was I sorry ,hell no .Maybe Will Smith should follow that advice ,dont do it in front of witnesses

I'm not sure why they would have staged it. Neither of them came out of it well.

My thoughts too, Kate. And I don't for one minute think that the audience would have been sitting there to hear the "joke" at a rehearsal, if indeed there was one. No doubt Rock had rehearsed it in his own head though. It was a disgusting snipe at someone suffering, in more than one sense, from a distressing condition. And not, as Rock said immediately afterwards, "a nice one".

Well, I'll stick my neck out and wait to be told I'm advocating violence .. I applaud Will Smith, and I believe a quick slap around the chops is quite different from a punch-up, and I also believe it was much more effective than heckling.

I am slow to anger on my own behalf but not on behalf of others, and I suspect if I'd been Will Smith in that moment, I'd have followed the slap with a knee in the groin.

He didn't punch him or knock him to the ground.

I think Will should not have not responded at all during the joke. Instead, he should have got him when there was no one around and done more than slap him. He could just deny it, if asked.

I find it boring beyond belief,a load of obscenely overpaid bunch of actors.
And how inappropriate to hold such an event when there are poor souls being killed etc in the Ukraine,did they even give a them a thought?, i doubt it .

We didn't have to watch it but now I feel I missed a bit of excitement which livened up proceedings.

I take your point but other life does go on; we can worry, despair, donate, offer help but we should still be able to go outside and enjoy the birdsong without feeling guilty.

The point about over-paid people receiving goodie bags is a good one - it would have been a nice gesture to have donated the 'goodies' or the equivalent in money to the refugees.

I ? Kenneth Branagh's acceptance speech - to the point. That's all it takes. No self-indulgent tearful guff.

I can understand him being angry on behalf of his wife but find it odd in that ( I didn’t know this) he’s quite happy to talk about them having an open marriage. Doesn’t quite make him my idea of an over protective husband. Any jokes about hair loss make me furious as my thin horrible hair has been the bane of my life as it was my mum’s (who I inherited it from). And I worry that my daughter has inherited it, too. It’s very difficult to feel confident about one’s appearance when follicly challenged. Maybe the so called comedian didn’t understand that it affects women far more emotionally than men? Either way, why do they have to have comedians compèring these events? What’s wrong with just being serious? And why, on a night when Will Smith was expected to win his first Oscar, use a comedian that he has history with? It’s all very odd.

Jane GI Jane starred Demi Moore as a soldier with a shaved head. It’s about 30 years old, so Rock’s gag was exactly current.

She (Moore) looked beautiful, but it was quite controversial; it seems that in the US female beauty standards are more rigid than ours.

(I had a shaved head in my very early 20s. It looked and felt amazing but was a bugger to grow out)

Why would anybody think that the audience is present for the rehearsal?!?!?!

I’m a bit confused here and unsure if it was staged or not. If indeed there had been a “rehearsal” then IMO it was definitely staged because if the Smiths really felt that strongly, they would have had the joke removed earlier.
Another possibility is that the three of them are very friendly and had agreed to the whole scene for publicity. Not sure of the personalities involved.
If there was no rehearsal then I would say it is all pathetically genuine.

It was a horrible, cruel comment by Chris Rock but I actually think blaming the words is a dangerous road to go down, working within criminal justice, it's a subjective defence used by violent men a lot of the time.

If Will Smith didn't find the joke funny (which it wasn't) why did he laugh? Jada certainly didn't laugh but Will did. Somethings not right here.

I wondered if he hadn't quite got the 'joke' - ie that he was on about hair loss. I've never seen GI Jane, I wouldn't have had a clue what he was insinuating
