Will Smith defends his Wife with a Wallop! ?

Dunno what's behind it all FannyCornforth but it goes back a long way; certainly as far as 2016 apparently. I'd guess that jealousy is the basis of it, it usually is. Smith is far more successful and popular than Rock.

And for what it's worth, I don't think that the ethnicity of either man had anything to do with last night's event. This was just 2 adult men; one of whom has made the wife of the other man the butt of his jokes for too long and got a smack for it. Colour of their skin is irrelevant.

This wasn't the first time that Rock had made Smith and his wife the butt of his "jokes"; he's been asked, several times to leave Jada Pinkett Smith out of it both on stage and online but, as with all bullies, he just carried on. Rock has been asked before why he's focused on JPS so much and his response was "I know I go too far sometimes but when I get up there, I just can't help it!" If you "can't help" being a bully, you'll get a smack sometimes to remind you. Seems fair.

I would feel more comfortable if Smith had ‘owned it’, rather than crying and apologising.

It seems to audience were all behind Will Smith, but what would their reaction be if it were a white man slapping a black man?

If Jada is suffering from alopecia, Will will have lived with the tears, distress and fear. Believe me, that is not an exaggeration, in my case anyway.
Yes they have money, she could buy the best wigs, hairpieces etc but it doesn't alter the psychological effect this has.
You try to tell yourself it's only hair, you're not ill, are more fortunate than some but it really doesn't help.

Right to be annoyed and defend his wife. I wouldn't condone the violence. Though perhaps he believes actions speak louder than words and he didn't have the words.
The comedian is more at fault for cheap gags.
I also think the money could have been given to the Ukraine cause, they all have plenty without getting a goody bag.

I think the Smith family have been the victim of years of bullying from this arrogant person (who I've never heard of but others seem to know).

Sometimes turning the other face, ignoring verbal abuse, asking for it to stop, calling someone out just doesn't work and enough is enough.
Will Smith probably is remorseful but perhaps that other person might think twice about bullying others in the future.

Me too. Will Smith was grinning when the 'joke' was told. Then his wife whispered something in his ear and he reacted. There was actually a pause in the proceedings as if it was expected. Could it be because there's a lot in the media about the Oscars being boring ...?

I think you might be right here Bluebell. Seems it was choreographed - if so as someone up thread said ‘there’s no such thing as bad publicity’. The viewing figures have tanked over the years. Maybe the producers had to think of something to get us all talking? If so we’ve definitely been had.

Alternatively, maybe Will Smith let it go at rehearsal, either because he didn't think it was actually going to be said in the ceremony itself, or his mind didn't process it quickly enough for him to react. Or both.

I know I've sometimes failed to react to unpleasant comments at the time, but have been very upset or angry afterwards, when I've had time to process them.

So judging by some of the comments on here if someone says something you don’t like it’s fine to smack them in the mouth? Really?

If he had limited his response to “keep my wife’s name out of your f………g mouth” and then had it out with Chris Rock in private I’d understand but walking on stage and belting him in the face with millions watching is, imo, totally unacceptable and should be called out as such.

Had that been my husband storming over being all macho I'd have slapped him upon his return.

It was a rubbish joke. Ignore would have worked better.

These awards programmes are filled with jokes and jbes directed towards the rich and famous

I noticed that the person laughing the most was Chris Rock at his own joke.

I've just seen the acceptance speech and Will's tears were profuse. Of course he's a brilliant actor and faking this would be doable but coupled with his wife's reaction and Will's anger I think the tears were genuine and for his and his wife's suffering.

Kate1949 is right. Hair loss is traumatic. I've partial hair loss and find it a daily embarrassment and humiliation. Will's wife suffers illness on top of the total alopecia.

I agree Sweetpeasue and "*Kate1949*. I don't condone violence but I have hair loss, yes it is traumatic, and disgusting to have it joked about.

No matter the place or situation, there's always one who has to go too far with their joke, and it's always as someone else's expense. They're completely incapable of seeing that they're "going too far", overstepping the mark, and that the joke has worn thin. And, sad to say but, sometimes, a smack in the mouth is what's needed to remind them to pipe down, have respect and learn some manners. Bet Chris Rock won't do it again.

No it’s definitely not right. It was assault. It showed a complete lack of control and the hypocrisy exhibited by the ‘stars’ and the academy is astounding.

If it was a stunt it was in very poor taste.

I don't understand how anyone can think it's acceptable for someone to hit another person whatever the provocation. Does Smith respond in this way whenever he gets angry?

Thank you, MS. Appreciated. In that unlikely eventuality, I would have prevented my husband from acting on my behalf. I do my own put downs.
