OK republicans think we shouldn’t have a Royal Family. That’s their POV.
But to criticise who should do what at a funeral that isn’t in their own family and is none of their business . . .
-that’s a new example of what republicans do that I didn’t know about before.

The Royal Family does seem to be being very badly advised at the moment, what with Prince William's recent tour and now this.

Ok, Andrew wants to go to his dad's memorial, but the Queen made a point of being escorted in by him. As mother, invite your son, as Head of State, maybe don't put him front and centre of proceedings. An appalling message of disregard for victims of abuse.

This was the Queen endorsing Andrew after he paid millions to a woman he says he has no recollection of ever meeting. Either Charles and William didn’t intervene – or they did and failed to stop the prince performing such a high profile role at his father’s memorial service.

So now we're going to quietly ignore the outstanding accusations against Prince Andrew because Her Maj (Gawd Bless Her) likes her son.

Whatever one's opinion of them, I found the comparison of clergy's highly decorative robes disrespectful in the extreme to the solemnity of the occasion.

I find the tradition, the ritual, pace, flowers, candles, the beauty of the building and stained glass, the music, words we all know and the robes worn a key part of the peace and beauty of any church service.

I think, regardless of individual's beliefs they are a timeless comfort to many through all life's sad and happy occasions.

I find all the opulence upsetting. But I am a Humanist so my opinion will be at variance to others anyway.

A mother’s love and all that. Plus it was a service for his father. He is family & it’s their business.

I might have phrased my post in a flippant manner but I genuinely do not understand why the garments are smothered in gold braid, gold embroidery and are brightly coloured and extravagant. What is the point in showing off? Does God take more notice if they wear such garments? They look like they are taking part in a theatrical show rather than being religious and humble. I look at nuns and Buddhist monks and other religions with their modest way of dress and can’t help compare the message that they send out.

In the bible it states (sorry, not verbatim) that we shouldn't use gold etc but rather rocks and stones and wood as effigies to god, so why all this pomp with their clothing??
It makes no sense to me!
I am not offended by what you said, but maybe that's because I don't believe there is/was an actual god, maybe just some little commoner who got the best of his clan!

The Queen attended the service with her family , she was escorted to her seat by Andrew, her two other sons and her daughter were escorted by their wives / husband.

Jesus let a woman wash his feet with expensive perfume. He was criticised. Shouldn't the perfume be sold and the money given to the poor was their accusation. The worship of God deserves the best- beautiful buildings, well rehearsed music, a well written sermon or address, appropriate clothes for the clergy and above all our humble, contrite hearts waiting for God to speak to us in his 'still, small voice'.
The C of E has reserves. I cannot give a figure which a previous poster has but I know they have to keep and repair a vast number of historic buildings and support a lot of retired clergy. They actually struggle to keep the show on the road and cutbacks are happening all the time.

Hsb The robes are richly embroidered with gold thread etc because the established church is actually just a branch of the aristocracy and just like the Crown Jewels, and the robes and coronets of lords and barons, they were meant to show the peasantry who was richest and who was in charge. By questioning this hierarchy you have obviously proved yourself to be some sort of anarchist and will shortly be sent to the Tower.

Have just watched the service on catch up, fast forwarded through the bits I wasn’t so interested in.

I thought the clergy looked wonderful in their finery. Was delighted to see so many of the RF there, including ones we don’t see very often. It looked like a real family occasion, and I bet the children will remember it all their lives.

Well, I thought it was quite in order for Andrew to escort his mother, she needed some support, he’s on his own, and whilst not excusing all his shenanigans, it must have been daunting for him having to be in the spotlight.

And what a lovely tribute was given by the Dean of Windsor, the whole family were listening so intently to his wise and perceptive words.

And yes, it was probably for the best that Harry didn’t come. The media attention would have all been on him, and I don’t think the rest of the family would have been so happy and relaxed if he had been present.

I was rather more taken with the fact that the entire royal family, including all but the smallest children, were there together with all the crowned heads of Europe. The notable exception should be hanging his head in shame.
