What is that about ? Totally ridiculous IMO.
When we eat out the whole point is to enjoy the meal and the company. Bloody nanny state gone mad !

We rarely go out for meals now, but I have noticed the calorie content shown for foods in cafes, such as Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. I have to say, when I first noticed it, it did put me off having a Blueberry muffin!

Oh, you can overcome it if you try - I did grin

Because working out calories, e numbers, additives and so on while dining out is too much of a cerebral chore for me personally. I'm interested in the provenance, presentation, taste and smell of the food.

I don't understand why people would go out for a relaxing meal in the first place only to get the calculator out to work out their choices. Are they counting the £ signs at the same time to work out their bill? Can't be good for the digestion.

What so hard to Understand? I'm a size 8...never calorie counted in my life....but I completely get that people on diets or healthy eating want to know how many calories they are eating.....its not good for the digestion stuffing your face with a load of unnecessary calories either

I will find it very useful. I don’t really understand why people are up in arms about it. If you choose to ignore it that’s up to you.

Callistemon21 Wed 06-Apr-22 20:44:56

It's not as if we eat out every day (well, we don't).

I can't see the harm. You can ignore it if you don't care about the calories, and take it into account if you do.

How is it 'nanny state'? A law banning the sale of fatty food or sugary deserts would be nannying, but this is just information - a bit like putting the ABV or units per glass on alcoholic drinks.

We get money off vouchers for grocery orders if we spend a certain amount.

However, if that certain amount includes alcohol we can't use the voucher, although we could in England.

That's a nanny state.

My guess is that some people prefer to keep their head in the sand.

McDonalds has full nutrition details for all its products.

I will ignore it, I eat out often and always when at work, I eat what I want and when I want. Let the calorie obsessed look, and I will be looking at what I will enjoy.

Well that's fine... you do you....but others will be grateful for it....too many fat people in the UK ....probably have no idea how many calories they are consuming

I agree. About 70% of people over 60 are overweight or obese.

It's the nanny state gone mad. Calories are probably the last thing on peoples minds when they go out for a meal.
I'd have thought there were more important things to think
about.

Which is possibly why so many people are fat.

As I think has been said, this isn't actually going to apply to individual restaurants such as a local independent restaurant. It's only for "mass-production" type places. They have to have a huge number of people working there apparently. So it's the fast food places, probably Pizza Express, (maybe Wetherspoons) and Costa etc

Pizza express been doing it for years

NotSpaghetti Wed 06-Apr-22 20:10:45

Oh does it Shinamae, interesting. I haven't used one for years so had no idea!

Wetherspoons already does put the calories

Which is what some people will probably do.

growstuff Wed 06-Apr-22 18:24:18

Carveries don't prepare food for individual customers. From my experience, they produce the same stuff time and time again, so it's not that difficult to work out that a spoonful of carrots has x calories or whatever.

The chain restaurants are able to do this already because they don't cook all the meals from scratch and don't serve vegetables eg potatoes in serving dishes - many meals have been pre-planned and reheated.

It won't be so easy for restaurants where all the the food is freshly and individually cooked.

How many of those restaurants where all the food is freshly and individually cooked have more than 250 employees? My guess is not many, so it won't affect them.

I think some do, particularly those serving carveries.

How will this work if people are helping themselves when things get back to normal?
One spoonful of cauliflower cheese = ?? calories?
One roast potato = ??
So customers calculate their own.
