When do you feel most at peace?

This was the subject line of an email I received from 'Family Search'.
It got me wondering/pondering and I still don't have an answer.

Are there any particular havens for Gransnetters, or maybe times, if not places?

On the rare occasions I can be on my own....even better if I can be outside somewhere.

Well, it's not on GN, that's for sure!

In bed, in the dark, holding hands with MrJ as we go to sleep.

Two things - knowing it's evening and with my door locked I'm unlikely to be disturbed by anything/anyone so that I can get lost in my Kindle or online is one; the other is spending time on a warm day just sitting in my fields with my horses, 4 dogs and my 5 cats who always come along to say hello!
Actually -make that 3 things - also when I'm snug in bed and can feel my late husband's presence watching over me. That is very, very precious.

Right here in my childhood home, I am 100% at peace.

What an interesting question ixion and quite a difficult one too. My first thoughts were about being with my family or with good friends but no, that’s when I’m happy and energised. Then I thought about sitting on the sofa with Orlin watching tv or reading a book but no, that’s when I’m being entertained.
I suppose I’m most at peace when I’m sitting in my garden with the sun warming my skin, birdsong filling my head, I’m watching leaves dancing in the breeze and my mind is a complete blank.

When I'm with my children/grandchildren/mum....I look round the room and feel truly blessed

This is a nice thread. It just goes to show that peace and happiness come in small moments and don't need to in grand places.

Peace for me usually involves forest walks. We have once nearby that goes through the forest down to a bay, and there is one spot that is particularly mossy and green. I always stop for a few moments to breath in the smell of the forest, and listen to the quiet.

And then my lovely bed! Sooo cosy, listening to the soft snore of Mr. CG. (across the expanse of the king size, haha).

How kind of them ixion. Yes churchyards espcially in the countryside are peaceful places just to be.

What lovely replies- thank you for sharing, common themes emerging!

What brings me peace is sitting in the quintessentially English churchyard where our family plot is. Yew trees, fascinating gravestones, all manner of wildlife in the beautifully tended and peaceful grounds.

On a practical note, hats off to the Church Wardens who know me and the fact that I now live a couple of hundred miles away.
On my pilgrimages (3 hours on public transport), they have shown me the hiding place of the spare vestry key. Here I can use the loo and make a cuppa - and enjoy a biscuit - before I head north again!

After a busy day, satisfied with what I have done and sure that my loved ones are safe and well, preparing to sleep in a nice cosy bed. Perfect

Beside the sea, preferably with land on the opposite side watching the birds and wandering along the tideline.

BBbevan Sun 10-Apr-22 18:42:45

Somewhere outside, quiet and with a breeze moving the clouds .

Today in the garden, I was just being. I fell asleep in the sun on the sun lounger. Just before I fell asleep, I was thinking of all the ways my parents would frown on me for doing "nothing" and how nice it felt to be not doing and just being. I don't feel guilty anymore.

Usually I feel most at peace on my own, or with my husband and my quiet son- by the sea or a river, or in the garden, or in bed. We all need those peaceful moments to recalibrate!

I can find peace in our conservatory, looking out into the garden watching the birds on the bird feeders .

A couple of times a year, on a warm sunny day, I visit a particular English Heritage Abbey. I can just sit and just Be.

Most Fridays after my yoga class,I take part in a Yoga Nidre class.
This allows my mind to calm and recalibrate.

Getting into bed with a cup of tea and a good book - especially if I don’t have to be up at any particular time the next day.

Charleygirl5 Sun 10-Apr-22 16:53:11

In bed, cosy, reading a good book and I loved it when my cat was alive and she snuggled up beside me.

Patsy70 Sun 10-Apr-22 15:58:17

In the garden, with my dog - where I am now. ?

TerriBull Sun 10-Apr-22 15:51:48

Well it comes in waves, but it's usually outside and there has to be sunshine. I felt very happy and fortunate when we got away in 2020 after the lockdown was lifted. Mid September, we held back after everyone had rushed off in August and experienced dreary weather. There was an Indian Summer of sorts in Devon when we went. I remember sitting at a little beach side cafe, in a particularly lovely beauty spot, there were people around but not heaving. We sat there all afternoon looking out to sea with a heightened appreciation given the prevailing circumstances, of just being alive and out in the sunshine .

On my own. Outside in the sun, in a natural environment. Either countryside or beach.

Grannmarie Sun 10-Apr-22 15:11:49

Sitting on our family memorial bench, in a tranquil walled garden within a beautiful, peaceful Marian Shrine. The gardens are well maintained and we can place our own plants at the benches, I've got heathers and pansies there just now.
It's not far from a busy town but it is so quiet that I can hear birdsong. It's good for my mind, body and spirit to sit and be still, remembering our loved ones and being thankful. ??

When I come in , close the door, so I’d say I’m my lovely home,

henetha Sun 10-Apr-22 15:07:20

When I'm on my own. Being with people, even those I love, makes me feel stressed somehow.

shysal Sun 10-Apr-22 15:03:44

Lying in the bath or sitting in the sun in my garden when it is tidy. Add a cat on my lap or chest purring away and I am at peace. My Bengal cat even lies on my chest in the bath (they like water)!
