IRRITATING ADS

Do any of you have ads that really drive you mad? My 2 are the detergent ad where they sing "Where is the sun?" None of them can hold a tune, and the song is banal, and the other ad is that rip off of the Beyonce song "If I were a boy". That kid murders it by singing "If I were a toy", and he mangles the song too. Do any other grans have ads they utterly hate?

MissAdventure

I have to say I hate the Macmillan ones.
False advertising in our case (though I know others have had better experiences)

I couldn't agree more x 2.

DD2 did the Mighty Hike and raised £1,000 for them. Nearly bloody killed herself after a nasty fall but kept going.

Did we get any help in our hour(s) of need? Not a sausage, despite all the promises. They simply didn't show up! angry

Yep, I'm with NotTooOld and you, VintageJazz. Lloyd's Bank is apparently "Always by my side ". Shame it can't be bothered to be in my High Street.

I can't stand ads where banks try to sound deep and meaningful and caring. Do they think we're all stupid?

MissAdventure Don’t be tempted to put Daisy perfume on your Christmas wish list! My DGD asked me for it last Christmas and it’s horrible, sickly sweet and cloying. Lovely bottle though.

One ad which annoys me is the one for coffee bags with the question - why didn't they think of them before?

Fact - they did think of them. Over 40 years ago I kept some in the store cupboard for visits by a coffee loving friend who eventually asked if there were many left. 'Just a few,' I replied. 'Please don't get any more, they're putrid! he laughed. I've never bought them since and I believe it's the same firm who advertise them now. Note to Kenco - some of your customers have long memories.

Hippo Bags
Drives me mad

I watched some afternoon TV recently and all the ads seemed to be about FUNERAL planning or using your home to pay for a holiday! Put me right off

The older people are sometimes portrayed as clueless nitwits, ill-informed and suspicious.

Lauren59 Thu 28-Apr-22 00:07:24

I’m not in the UK so haven’t seen some of the irritating ads mentioned here but in general I’m greatly annoyed by ads that pander to older people as if they’re idiots. There are a few insurance company ads that send me over the edge!

Honeysuckleberries Wed 27-Apr-22 23:56:30

The most annoying adverts are the ones I sit through, losing the plot of the programme, and then when the adverts have finished I realise I’ve recorded the programme! I do it every bl**dy time.

I have enjoyed TV ads but am often sitting eating when that revolting vacuum cleaner ad comes on so I don't risk watching any daytime ads.

Agree with the sentiment of the Lloyds bank as haters but I personally love the actual ad the horses are magnificent!

Granmarderby10 Sat 23-Apr-22 12:24:45

…suspicious I meant to add

Granmarderby10 Sat 23-Apr-22 12:23:46

I preferred the more filmic ads of yesteryear …I’m thinking Milk Tray, Old Spice, Guinness (other stouts are available) and the comedic ones.
Alas they cost much more money to make and the population as a whole are more cynical and ?

Esmay Fri 22-Apr-22 17:02:10

I love the advertisement for Ladbrokes ,though I always forget what it's advertising !
It's the one when they have an office party and they all chase after a balloon ,then a squashed can !
I don't know what the music is .

And the Lloyd's one with horses is nice to watch .

I know we're talking irritating ads but it irritates me when you get a good one and after a few days they shorten it. The one I really liked was for HeyCars. The driver who lip-synced to Flo-Ridas "Feel Good". I would stop whatever I was doing to watch then and they shortened it.

What concerns me more than the actual ads is that the ad agencies know their business, and adverts are an insight into how they see society and how to sell things to us. If using ads didn't sell their products no business would pay for them. I'm sure there have been a few over the years that were a waste of money but on the whole they have to deliver if the ad agency is to survive.

So somewhere there are a lot of people who are convinced enough by these mind-numbing ads to spend their money. Perhaps these are the same people who think vaccines magnetize you and/or carry chips so we will all become slaves to Bill Gates.

MissAdventure Fri 22-Apr-22 14:56:36

Those ads reduce me to tears, regularly, when I see how things could have been.

For some people, Macmillan really are like that, and provide endless support, I know.

Just not for others.

Thisismyname1953 Fri 22-Apr-22 14:49:39

@missAdventure. I agree with you about McMillan nurses. When my mum lost her sister to lung cancer she made a donation to McMillan. They hounded her for a long time afterwards for more money . In the end I spoke to them to explain my mum was a widow and didn’t have two pennies to rub together. They did leave it after that . I also nursed my mum and my uncle through cancer in their own home . The good boy contact I had from McMillans was a phone call they day my uncle died to see if I wanted to sit with him ! No thanks .

Esmay Fri 22-Apr-22 14:10:26

Granmarderby -I think that it's beige cardied June with her indeterminate Northern accent .

I love our accents and think that we should celebrate them .

I think that the ad agency have created her as someone you'd like and listen to .

I know what they can do with their bloody parsnips !

Shropshirelass Fri 22-Apr-22 09:12:29

Most of them! I often wonder about the mindset of whoever invents them decides they are good enough! I do like the Lloyds Bank advert with the horses though. That’s a good one.

Granmarderby10 Fri 22-Apr-22 09:09:20

For me it’s the beige cardy woman from next door with her wrongly delivered Sun life insurance letter and monotone NORTHERN dialect

Esmay Fri 22-Apr-22 09:07:54

And I'm adding HD mops to the irritating
list .
Thank goodness for Thane , says the highly
enthusiastic presenter.
It might be a great product ,but the ad makes me feel totally crazy !

HowVeryDareYou Fri 22-Apr-22 08:43:50

The new one for incontinence pads, where the 2 women are doing yoga. The 2nd woman, wearing her pad, apparently, says something like "I'm just letting it all go"

One for cars, where the man is rapping

BlueBelle Fri 22-Apr-22 06:33:21

I completely blank out when adverts are on so most of the ones you’re all talking about I ve never taken any notice of
Why do you all watch them ?
Adverts are the time to have a wee, make a coffee, get a few bits of jigsaw in or just look into space (I do perk up when the sweets with the blokes talking as kids is on because I like that one but couldn’t tell you what sweets they are advertising)

I don’t think I ve ever bought anything from seeing as advert

Bit of a nasty observation homefarm
