Things that annoy you that shouldn't

What really stupid things, that do not impact on your life, really annoy you?

For me:

The expression 'reach out'

People jumping into shorts and sun dresses the minute the temperature rises above 13 degrees

Signs with apostrophes in the wrong place.

Celebrities, chat shows with self promoting celebrities, baseball caps, people undressing as soon as the sun peeps out, speeding motorists, adverts, entitlement and arrogance of any kind, the gradual americanisation of our language, people hijacking your conversation to something to do with them....and on and on!

Some of these annoying things may reduce our options. For instance if an estate agent does not understand apostrophes in his Rightmove entry I think twice about his ability as an estate agent.

Again when someone says "passed" when they mean died they may be unable to accept death and loss.

That's where I am on apostrophes.

I've had to learn not to comment on any social medium or forum about rogue or vanished apostrophes for fear of being called a grammar nazi or an abuser of people who are differently spellingly abled but if a company cannot be bothered to check they've got it right in their own documentation or publicity, then they don't get my business.

People (usually males) who stand by the newspaper display reading various papers then put them back. Drivers who drive to the front of a queue and then indicate to cut in (grrr) and the recent habit of young actors to growl when they speak. Mostly Americans. If you watch Hudson and Rex, main actor does it all the time.

Just as Grandma70s doesn't like Nan or Nana, I can't bear Granny. It sounds so OLD.

I don’t like Grandma - to me it sounds old and fat!
Funny how we see things so differently.

I don’t mind Grandma or Granny but don’t want to be called either if those names. Nana or Nan sounds twee so didn’t want that either. My grandchildren and their partners have always called me Tatty but now that one of them is pregnant she asked what I’d like to be called, I said just stick with Tatty and she said “ how about Gratty ??” that gave us both a good giggle.
Otherwise I’ll go for the full Great Grandmama.

Fringes.
I can't help thinking how the person would look without a fringe.

My granny used to tell me to never get a fringe like Sandie Shaw and clearly didn't believe me saying I had no intention of doing such a thing.

Everything already mentioned but also people being interviewed on TV about the loss of a friend or relative and dabbing at non existent tears. I’m sure they’re genuinely upset but that just doesn’t look convincing.
The growing trend for saying ‘train station’ instead of ‘railway station’
I could think of many more but it’ll just make me even grumpier.

People who say 'owers' instead of 'hours', including presenters on tv and radio, who really should know better! IMO.

You mean they say 'hours' instead of 'aahhs'?

Since I’ve just seen it on another thread, people who can’t spell Keir Starmer’s first name properly.

The use of SORRY. If you just took a moment to think through your actions, then you wouldn’t have to be sorry. The word has lost it meaning from overuse.

Loads of things annoy me now - I've definitely turned into a grumpy old woman who is convinced everything in life is designed to be used by a 25 year old super-fit man!
I happen to think I am justified in being annoyed at most of these things wink
Things that shouldn't annoy me? TV shows full of "celebrities" I've never heard of! It's probably just because I'm out of touch confused

paddyann54 Wed 20-Apr-22 12:59:11

saying Space instead of room .religions...all of them .tories,so called "Scottish" unionists ,people who tell me their dog is just being friendly when it jumps up at me..I dont like strange dogs and have no way of knowing if their dog will bite me

Sueki44 Wed 20-Apr-22 12:55:45

People who muddle up amount and number, as in ‘ the amount of people ‘!

MTDancer Wed 20-Apr-22 12:53:09

or chesta draws

Buttonjugs Wed 20-Apr-22 12:47:30

Bad grammar, bad driving, entitled people, celebrity culture, adverts, magazine shows, Tories, Americanisms, charity on television (because we all know how much of that money is going to CEOs and less to the people in need), religion, sycophants, sex on tv drama (who needs to see that?). I think that’s it. I may need more time ?

grannybuy Wed 20-Apr-22 12:43:37

Mom instead of mum, you guys, have went. Property programme presenters saying, “ this is your bathroom, kitchen” etc when ‘the’ is more appropriate.
Drivers who only signal as they are actually turning a corner. ( or not at all ) - I always thought signals were to warn other drivers of your intent of an action, not for using when it’s almost too late. I am getting worse as I get older!

b1zzle Wed 20-Apr-22 12:41:12

Bad spelling. A week ago there was a TV magazine for sale with the words 'Judgment Day' right across the front. I needed one, but not that badly.

Bazza Wed 20-Apr-22 12:38:20

Haitch instead of aitch. Incorrect use of apostrophes. Drivers who use indicators as an optional extra. I could go on…….

sundowngirl Wed 20-Apr-22 12:30:27

My bad
I'm good
We are pregnant

pce612 Wed 20-Apr-22 12:28:36

Glottal stops, bad grammar and spelling, adverts with squeaky voiced child actors.......... just about everything else already mentioned.

sodapop Wed 20-Apr-22 12:27:59

Myself absolutely agrees with yourself Vintagejazz about Pedants Corner. So irritating.

Alioop Wed 20-Apr-22 12:27:40

I hate being called Hun. A friend says it all the time and it drives me bonkers.
Men who think women on their own are desperate for a partner and can't manage on their own. I've a man around the corner from me who has become quite rude to me because I declined his advances. He actually said I won't get as many offers now at my age. Rude!

Merryweather Wed 20-Apr-22 12:26:49

Drivers on the motorway hogging the middle lane when they are not overtaking. Drive in the left!

I’m

sodapop Wed 20-Apr-22 12:23:29

Moggycuddler

How should we pronounce hours then, if not "owers" (to rhyme with showers?)
The h is silent. Forgive me, I'm just an ignorant northerner. . .

Please don't say that Moggycuddler it's another thing which annoys me when a northern accent is used to portray someone who is not very bright.
