Yes and no. I think it fell out of the OED as a variant, but it is in other dictionaries. I assume -t participles are dying in favour of -ed. But we still in the UK use, for example, 'have learnt' and 'have dreamt' as well as 'have learned' and 'have dreamed'. In fact I'd go so far as to guess that dreamt is more common than dreamed.

It may be because - but this is speculation again - that -t has almost disappeared in American English.

My husband takes up a whole afternoon cleaning his car. I always say he should just get it valeted. It's time wasted when we could have gone somewhere.

I like all local accents and dialects, Miss A. It's funny how some local accents are more popular than others. Nearly everyone likes Geordie. I suppose the Beatles, and Cilla, popularised the Scouse dialect.

I love the wh-ale way of speaking.

You may think "Who on Earth talks a lot about whales anyway?" Well we do , as daughter in law goes to stay in the NE Scotland to wh-wh-whale and dolphin watch.

Sons and thoroughly English daughter in law can say whales the proper Scottish way when they try which they exaggerate with a big blowing noise when they want to tease me.

Wales is voiced 'w' but whales is not voiced 'w' ( merely breathed like blowing something away) when you retain your Scottish pronunciation.

The above affects me by making me giggle.

My sons and daughter in law tease me how I pronounce Wales and whales as if they are different words.

My mouth just will not go into the shape required to pronounce things differently.
Just as when I used to visit Scotland, people there were unable to replicate an Essex accent.

Most of the frequently quoted examples above don't bother me, perhaps because, as an expat I am not continually confronted with them. I do love (and use) "my bad" - it is concise, sufficiently apologetic and admits own fault.

What puzzles me is why people feel the need to say "whether or not". "Whether" already includes both possibilities, so what is the "not" there for?

I think the problem with the pronunciation of "hours" mentioned back on page 1 is nothing to do with the "h" being aspirated, but whether you give it one syllable or two.

In my Southern English pronunciation it sounds like "are were". But not "ow were". And definitely not "are" - that's for the toffs.

When people in TV shows leave their houses/flats and don't turn the lights off. It used to be mainly on American programmes, but I've noticed them doing it (or rather not doing it ) on Not Going Out.
