I got tickets to glasgow from Preston....5.50 outward...6.50 homeward journey ( with a railcard) ....the day before my quote was 12.50 and 24.00....so a big saving ( thats was x 2 as my DD also going)

I had a look at a few journeys / dates and struggled to find anything that worked for me. I do think the idea of splitting the tickets might help, and get at least some of the journey at reduced price. I gave up trying as I had wasted enough time but I will give it another go.

The free bus travel for up to 22 year olds has made a huge difference to my GS who tells me hes saving around £300 a month on fares .This is the age group where they either use Mum or Dad as taxis or have old bangers that are not environmentally friendly ...and of course lower wages .So its a great initiative in many ways. Now Scottish Rail is back in public hands we'll look forward to the same on the trains

The Martin Lewis website used to have a fare splitting calculator.
Not sure if it still does, but there are apps you can use which will calculate the costs of splitting.

You should also chack if splitting your journey is cheaper. Sometimes if you do it as two tickets it is cheaper and you actually don't even change trains

I think flexibility is the key, I just checked two dates for the same journey, and the cheapest on one day was £72.90, the same time the next day was £19.60.

I just checked this and for the dates I want to travel the prices were exactly the same as the Trainline.

I saw this and the prices are only a fraction of the normal ones so it is a good deal.

Thank you for sharing Mick I was having a look at this yesterday. I noted if you have a senior rail card it also takes of the third off discount. Win win!
