Can shops still insist on customers wearing face masks?

I have been wondering how you can wear a facemask when getting hair done..washing ,cutting or styling etc. However the same rule exists in NZ but I no longer have any hair to need a hairdresser

All health related establishment insist of masks and yes they can insist, good job too

I have been in hospital and other areas where I was supposed to wear one. I wore my exemption lanyard when masks were mandatory. If that wasn't good enough, I wore a visor. People were generally satisfied when I showed a negative test.

And before we get the selfish/murderer/stupid remarks (right back at you) I've never had covid, therefore never passed it on.

Lilac chaser. Let me spell this out for you. People like me who have cancer are extremely vulnerable to infection and covid would be life threatening. ( this from oncologist) We cannot be locked in our houses the whole time, we have to go to hospitals, opticians etc . You cannot possibly know if you have covid . Your childish attitude is very selfish, I presume you think your own preference for not wearing a mask even in hospital etc is more important than my life ?

Shops can make their own policy on a lot of things eg dogs, no dogs, scooters, no scooters, cards for payment only, so yes they can insist on a mask. Would you say no to an ophthalmologist in a hospital?

Me too. It is the boasting about not wearing a mask and calling everyone who does deluded that sickens me most.

Gransnet is so much nastier than Mumsnet. Perhaps people lose their inhibitions as they get older. There's nothing wrong with exchanging opinions but the rudeness from some posters is really unpleasant.

I am despairing at the lack of compassion and humanity from some posters on this thread.

LilacChaser, my husband and I caught Covid, after I had been sheilding for two years, from my asymptomatic granddaughter. Her parents didn't know she had it until it was too late. Therefore, you too could have had it and passed it on unwittingly to someone like me , who is CEV, in a hospital, without even knowing it.
A family friend caught Covid at an outpatient appointment and died. Someone must have given it to her, because that was the only place she had been in two years. Her daughter and SIL ended up in hospital with it.

I would hope that you are genuinely medically exempt, you have never said either way. I am exempt, BUT I still try to wear a mask. It's not easy, but I try.

If you are genuinely exempt then no-one would say you were selfish. On the other hand, if you are not.....

BiscuitMuncher I suspect a selfish person such as you would very much expect others to take measures to protect you, if you felt you needed them.

I think I’m correct in saying that anyone could download an exemption card template, whether it was for legitimate use or not. Therefore they were meaningless.

Whenever I'm not wearing a mask now, I am acutely aware of feeling people's breath on my face, even if they are not right up close. I really hate this. I've never had Covid.

I always wear one when attending the opticians but on a recent eye test the optician told me I was free to remove it once seated for the eye examination which I gratefully did.
Haven’t worn one anywhere else for quite a time they are becoming very few and far between

I'm going into hospital on Monday. Hopefully just a day job. Masks are to be worn in public areas but in my private room they aren't mandatory.

Also I was at the opticians a few weeks ago and was told not to bother!

Hairdresser stopped them the day the requirements were changed. Nobody wore one when I was in there.

I went with DH to Specsavers recently and we were not wearing masks. I noticed that most people were wearing them so when we sat down for the initial admin before the test I asked if we should be wearing a mask and the assistant said preferably and offered to get us one. But no-one had offered us one when we entered so they were not exactly insisted upon.

Surely you should have had the common sense to wear one?

But you you could have and still refused to wear a mask around vulnerable people. How do you know you weren't asymptomatic,as huge numbers were,and didn't pass it on to someone more vulnerable than yourself who ended up seriouslyill or with long covid?

I went to the optician three weeks ago, my optician wore one and so did I, not a problem. The receptionists wore theirs to.

I wear a mask at the Doctors, Hospital and Opticians. Don’t wear one in the Supermarket now.
A dear Friend had Cancer and whenever I visit her always wear a mask, unless we sit outside.

Masks can never be a cure, but they do help prevent transmission, and protect you from others. My son and family live in Japan and the whole population wear masks to help prevent transmission - and did so pre- covid - with great results.
I can never understand why people won’t wear them to protect others. Just selfish!
There was some research that initially stated they made no difference, but science soon proved them wrong and the opinions were changed. Obviously a few of you never caught up with that.
I hate wearing a mask as I have asthma and other issues, I am also in and out of hospital quite frequently for day surgery, and I am so very glad of all the care taken to protect others.
I still wear one and will continue to do so.

Please do some more research Biscuitmuncher - you are TOTALLY wrong!
