I am 64 and I like to cycle, kayak and jog. I am very slow at all 3 and people laugh at me. Last week I was climbing a hill and someone shouted, "Go on Doris (not my name), give it some".

Usually, it makes me laugh, but I do wonder what motivates people.

That sounds very unkind , I think you are great and doing your best , ignore them and keep at it . Maybe you will get faster with practice, but slow and steady won the race xxxx

I admire you tremendously, get some headphones and listen to music while you exercise - you're better than they are ?

It doesn't matter that you are slow it's just good to exercise. Ignore people who think they are being funny. They aren't.

How rude of that person. Go on doing, and especially enjoying, the exercise you do at your own pace. You’re not competing with anyone and it’s great that you are doing all that exercise. You ask what motivates people. Goodness knows but as Elless suggested, for the hill climbing at least you could use headphones and listen to music. Happy exercising!

It's a bit like being fat and trying to take up running. Rude cat calls. Totally ignore it. Headphones with music, as others have said, are good. It'll relax you and drown out the neanderthals.

I dont think headphones and cycling is a brilliant idea, but thanks anyway

Squirrie I know it defeats the object of blocking comments but I have headphones that go in front of the ear on the bone so that you can still hear, they are brilliant if you do want to enjoy music.

You are doing well just try and ignore people who are rude. I'm 75 and I cycle swim and lift weights. I've never been dissed while cycling in fact I find the mainly male bikers who overtake me are very encouraging. I am very fit for my age, recently I fell and broke my clavicle, everyone including the people at the fracture clinic are amazed at how quickly I've recovered.
