I wish I had the nerve but I’d feel a bit silly going on my own - not sure why really?

I wouldn’t go to a restaurant or cafe on my own either, as for a pub! ?

Yes definitely, have done so many times. Cinema, theatre and ballet (my friends weren't interested), cafes, restaurants, pubs - never thought twice about being on my own, never felt awkward about it, even though I'm quite a shy person.

I have always been to most places on my own, though not to the cinema for several years now. I eat out alone as well, go on road trips to the States on my own, went to Australia on my own at the age of 19.

My husband does not share many of my interests!

All the time! Did so when I was a student as there were films and theatre I want to see, but female friends appeared to joined at the hip with boyfriends.
Agree that daytime events - many people are there alone. Going to music gigs I mainly go alone. I came to the conclusion if you don’t go then you’ll miss a good time/experience! Life’s too short, not to…!

I go to the cinema and cafes and pubs on my own. Of course I do. Why would I want to sit next to someone watching a movie? It is not a talking experience. Developing 'the nerve' to do things alone will stand you in good stead in life. Or are you saying I appear 'silly' to you when I do not have another person with me? It never occurred to you people could be thinking badly of me for going about my day.

Ive never been to a cinema alone, or a cafe or a restaurant, I dont go shopping alone. At best I get dropped at places like hairdressers or if i have to go in the craft store my husband waits in the car for me. Its not that I am incapable it is just we prefer doing things together

Have done cafes and restaurants on my own =not pubs but this is not of interest to me. No problem with going to the theatre or cinema on my own - I would choose a matinee because there would be less people.

Love going to the cinema on my own, I can see what I want and when. It’s much more common these days to do many of the activities you mention alone.

Only once, I was sixteen at the time did I go to the cinema on my own and that was to be, I decided. the first and only time as a guy, out of all the empty seats around me, came and sat next to me. He became a little too friendly wont go into detail and that is when I decided to move and found an usherette that is what they were known as and explained the situation She found me another seat thankfully this time I was able to watch the film without any problems.

Why not try it - if you don't enjoy it you don't need to go on your own again. A matinee performance is usually quieter.

If I didn't go on my own I would hardly ever go at all. Even before my husband died he wasn't interested and the only other person would be my granddaughter and she can't afford it so I end up paying.

Nannina Fri 20-May-22 12:57:12

Of course! Most of my friends are still working so I go to all sorts of places, including holidays, on my own. No-ones given me a second glance and I’ve met some very interesting people. Go for it!

Lindylou57 Fri 20-May-22 12:56:53

Yes many times. Husband doesn't always want to go with me to plays so I often go alone. Usually end up chatting to person next to me anyway. Why miss out on something you really want to do or see?

Nodj Fri 20-May-22 12:40:02

Yes I have! I did it a few years ago; not as often now since the world has gotten a little crazy!

Dempie55 Fri 20-May-22 12:36:11

I go to the cinema and theatre regularly in the afternoons on my own. Usually a Wednesday, as they have discount. I go to the Everyman cinema which does Silver Screenings and has Senior tickets anyway at all times. Since being widowed, I have no choice, as there's nobody else I know who would come with me. I don't really go out much in the evenings, unless it's with family. I still feel awkward in a cafe, though, and can't really afford it anyway these days!

Hemelbelle Fri 20-May-22 12:36:01

I've been to the cinema in the day time quite a few times on my own and found it quite easy. Bought a double scoop tub of ice cream; what's not to like especially if the film is good smile
I've been to cafes by myself as well and felt very comfortable.

Saggi Fri 20-May-22 12:28:58

I’d never eat out or go anywhere if I had to have somebody with me. What is the problem with being solo ?

Growing0ldDisgracefully Fri 20-May-22 12:28:29

Not the cinema or theatre as those aren't activities I'm interested in, but go to a lot of other places on my own (cafe, pub, festivals, etc).

Granbelle10 Fri 20-May-22 12:21:30

Yes. I've been to the theatre, restaurants, art galleries, museums and even on continental holidays on my own. I'm happily married and have lots of friends and enjoy all sorts of entertainment both with others, as well as on my own. Sometimes I like doing things on the spur of the moment and prefer to just up and go without too much discussion before my sudden urge dissipates. Also my taste does not always coincide with others, and although I do not mind joining in with friends' choice of entertainment, I prefer to just attend my own choices without imposing on others who are less keen. I don't have to compromise, as to what I see, what I eat, how long I stay, how far I walk, etc. Actually I do enjoy my own company.

Almost always go to the theatre, concert hall and cinema by myself. Haven doe for 30+ years.

Connor13 Fri 20-May-22 12:15:14

Yes I go all over on my own even abroad do what you want when you want freedom

sandwichgeneration Fri 20-May-22 12:10:34

90% of the time I go to the theatre/cinema/concert on my own. I'm going to watch and listen to something not for a chat. It means I can choose what I like to see and not have to compromise. Plenty of time to chat elsewhere.

HannahLoisLuke Fri 20-May-22 12:09:17

Yes, often pre and post covid. I go in the morning when it’s half empty and the tickets are cheap.
It’s really enjoyable and there are quite a few other lone viewers.

GrauntyHelen Fri 20-May-22 12:06:25

Yes have done for years I have no problems going anywhere on my own Nobody looks nobody cares I enjoy me time

Alioop Fri 20-May-22 12:05:24

I would go to a cafe on my own, but not the cinema, theatre or out for dinner. I'm lucky enough my friend is always up for a night out as her husband doesn't really like the theatre, but I should really give it a try sometime.

Quaver22 Fri 20-May-22 12:01:15

I frequently go to the theatre and to the cinema alone. I was quite proud of myself when I went alone to Verona to see two operas. It was a wonderful experience! The only time I have ever felt uncomfortable was at a cinema matinee a few years ago when I was the only person in the auditorium. That was a bit creepy!
