Grandson’s misunderstanding

Yesterday my son was telling me of a conversation he had with his (just) 5 year old.

T: Daddy, where are William Wallace’s balls?
A: What do you mean?
T: I know they are in Scotland and they are rare.
A: Where have you heard this?
T: Horrible Histories. They said William Wallace and his rare balls were in Scotland.
A: It’s REBELS

To be fair my grandson is half Portuguese and English is his second language ? I also don’t think he has heard a Scottish accent before either

Grandmasue. gringrin
Actually quite clever for a non Scottish child (or adult!) to understand anything! grinwink
PS. Scottish grans please don’t be offended!

He has a strange mix of Portuguese and Mancunian accent. My son is fluent in Portuguese but the boys always speak to him in English and switch between English and Portuguese with their mum. ?

William Wallace didn't lead REBELS ,he led his countrymen against invading forces Scotland was an Independent country The English were attempting to take us by force ...they didn't .They had to wait and con us out of our freedoms after sabotaging Darien and paying bribes to "nobles" or as Burns says A parcel o rogues in 1707

Excellent, GrandmaSue
They do make us laugh with their slight misunderstandings, don't they!

So - try explaining all that to a 5 year old whose first language is not English and as spoken by a Scot ?

Thank you for putting me right. I’ll explain how he got it all wrong tomorrow when we FaceTime. ?

Good luck!

William Wallace certainly had balls, though didn't he!!

(Apologies, not a term I would normally use but I couldn't resist.)
