Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

Unlike football the Platinum Jubilee is a one off. It wont be happening again and will all be over by the end of next week, when we're done with the footage and reports of what happened over the weekend.

Unfortunately for me anyway, the same cannot be said of football

I'm not sure you actually understood my post...

Today I learned that you're not allowed to not like Jubilees.

Not liking Jubilees ruins Jubilees for other people. But showing Jubilee celebrations and merchandise in every possible location and discussing them constantly doesn't ruin anything for people who don't like it. (This is sarcasm)

This, apparently, is how things are.

Going to street parties is not compulsory

GreenGran78 Tue 31-May-22 09:46:40

I can remember the street party we had to celebrate the end of the war! I was 8 years old.

Russ Jones on Twitter this morning. Apparently he really does mean football, but I thought he was talking about jubilees, I really did. Replace the word "football" with "Jubilees".

Good for you. But don’t call those of us who don’t enjoy those things ‘negative’. Enjoying parties isn’t compulsory.

Maidmarion Tue 31-May-22 08:39:26

Good grief…. Such a lot of negativity…. I stopped reading on page two!!! I’m looking forward to all the jollity, flag waving, eating trifle etc…. A good opportunity for friendly gatherings and banter… especially after the last two years…!!!!

Grandma29 Tue 31-May-22 08:33:04

Why is when we have something to celebrate do people complain?
A personal choice obviously but after the past two years it’s nice to spread a little optimism.
Most of the friends I have will be enjoying the next few days and raising a glass to out Queen

Her regnal name is Elizabeth II

But she is the first monarch of Scotland to be called Elizabeth.

She is also Elizabeth II in Australia (for example) which hadn't even been discovered by Europe at the time Elizabeth I reigned. So the "English" naming system has to be adopted by everyone, whether they like it or not.

^The general feeling in this part of the world is the hope that Elizabeth the first will be Elizabeth the last^

She's Elizabeth the second.

Not where I live Chewbacca. This simply shows the level of ignorance in the history of this country. She is the first queen Elizabeth in Scotland.

Why celebrate the class system? It has caused endless heartache and it is not a fair system where people inherit vast sums of money and vast tracts of land. Ridiculous in this day and age.

I agree!

Whatever you’re doing try to catch Queen and Adam Lambert opening the Jubilee Concert on Saturday. I cant wait!!

Nannina Mon 30-May-22 23:30:04

As a republican (sorry if that’s a swear word for some) I’m not really into the Jubilee celebrations. However I live at the top of a cul de sac and the celebrations are taking place outside my door so I think I’ll have to endure them or perhaps even join in the party ?

Eloethan Mon 30-May-22 23:25:18

I'm not a misery and actually object to being called miserable because I choose not to celebrate a system that is outdated and which enshrines inequality and unearned privilege. I love a good party and a bit of singing and dancing but I will not be participating in street parties and the like.

paddyann54 Mon 30-May-22 23:17:28

thanks fot posting Carlaws tweet volver maybe if folk on here read the relies they'll understand that it not half a dozen republicans against the rest of the world ...though it somtimes feels like it on here .
Iam not miserable or bad tempered or any of the other things I've been called by GNetters. I just think medieval things belong in the past not the 21st century .Lizzie the last sounds good to me...and a huge number of Scots

Notagranyet1234 Mon 30-May-22 22:32:15

Well the Scrooge's I work for have refused to give staff the extra days holiday so I'm working as per usual ?

Esspee Mon 30-May-22 22:06:32

I won’t be celebrating, nobody I know is at all interested. The general feeling in this part of the world is the hope that Elizabeth the first will be Elizabeth the last. When she goes the whole ridiculous forelock tugging farce needs to be shut down.

I reckon that if Boris is forced to stand down there will be huge celebrations everywhere and I will definitely be joining in.

Bijou

So what. She is 96. She has never had to worry about money, health or somewhere to live. I am 99 had to work in London during the Blitz, served in the WAAF, when demobbed couldn’t find anywhere to live because having been in the Forces wasn’t on a housing list. Homeless with a baby. Had to manage on meagre rations. Have had cancer twice.

Respect, Bijou People like you (and HM) have made this country great. Keep on trucking!

Secondwind Mon 30-May-22 21:52:02

The more this goes on, the less interested I am. I know that the date has been dictated by history, but it couldn’t be happening at a worse time with all the turmoil and worry we have at the moment. I’m beginning to think that there should be a big rethink about the monarchy after the Queen dies.

Quite a few wet blankets in the UK today. If I lived in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, I would fly my country's flag with the deepest pride, as I do here. I completely understand why people would want to be what they are ( be it Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish) and support their individual nation. Nationalism has gotten a bad name because of the Third Reich. You can love your country and put it first above others and not be a Nazi or any other kind of terrible person.

Are you suggesting that those such as me who are not joining in the communal jollity or displaying flags or bunting are ‘Nazis or other terrible people’?

What? No sorry. Of course she has a private life. She's the most private person in the country.

How much is she worth? How does she feel about her children? What are her politics? What are her hobbies? What does she like to watch on TV? What's her favourite film or book? What's she doing tonight? Not what the PR machine tells you - actually what are the answers to those questions?

Quite frankly, telling a 99 year old former member of the forces that she's better off than the queen because she "probably had a private life" is pretty shameful.

Well thanks for that. Perhaps I should have said ‘family life’.

Keep digging.

Ooops missed the other picture

I've had a lovely day to-day, starting to put up the Bunting in the house, arranging flowers in vases with little Union Jacks, deciding on the food for the little Family Party we will be having and hoping tomorrow will be better weather for us to put up the Bunting outside the house. The shops in our local High Street have put up some lovely decorations. Even Hairdressers and Barbers who have no incentive to do this to increase their business. In between I've watched on i Player the Queen's First Trooping the Colour and the wonderful Documentary from last night which she narrated. It's a welcome break from politics etc. I even dug out some long forgotten Coronation and Jubilee cups, beakers, plate and saucer from a collection I have. George V Silver Jubilee, Edward VIII non Coronation , Queen Elizaabth Coronation and Silver Jubilee. Total tat but I still love 'em. Hope the pics are clear enough.
