Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

Still , hold on to that bunting as it will be needed for the celebrations of the Queen’s 100th birthday and that will be another landmark occasion.
So that will be 2026, then in 2027 the bunting can come out again for 75 years which is an even bigger number in terms of celebrations.

Our Jubilee party will be a gentle, pleasant affair. Just nieghbours getting together to toast Her Majesty and enjoying each others company. We're also planting a tree. Jubilee celebrations don't have to be vulgar extravaganzas.
Do come too "volver*. Promise not to force feed you trifle!!

Thank you for the invitation Aveline, I respectfully decline wink

Reading this thread has been quite enlightening. I thought I was the only one who is underwhelmed by the Jubilee celebrations. In fact, the long reign over us has convinced me that it is time for a radical change of how the monarchy works. Still , hold on to that bunting as it will be needed for the celebrations of the Queen’s 100th birthday and that will be another landmark occasion.

My very thoughts.

Joseanne, I think we are celebrating 70 year’s reign, but the exact date in February when the Queen became queen 70 years ago is also the date her father died- so not a date to celebrate!
We have put up a jubilee flag, ( as the old flag pole for our little community is in our garden) but not planned anything else.
I watched the silver jubilee procession just outside St Paul’s cathedral in 1977, as a student in London, having bedded down on the pavement overnight to get a good view. It was certainly worth seeing. I don’t remember any parties but then we all had exams to sit. I might see if I can find the old photos.
This jubilee feels very different- more subdued.

Fireworks? Loud music?
That sounds OTT, poor you.

You could have phoned the police if it went on until 1.30 am

Beanutz2115 Sun 29-May-22 10:42:10

Last night our neighbours had a party -so loud the bass made me feel sick ( I have ADHD) it want on until 0130. They had a DJ who announced there will be a party next Jubilee weekend. Throw fireworks into the mix and it’s going to be hell.

The railway museum is having a jubilee event. I shall have a wander around the marina and wave to the children on the dressed up steam trains. At home we will enjoy a chicken sandwich with Coronation mayonnaise and eat a bowl of raspberry trifle. I do have a jubilee pencil because I’m a magpie and couldn’t resist the crown topper grin

My fir tree outside the front door was dressed in its bunting yesterday afternoon and I'm looking forward to our street party on Thursday as a chance to meet the newish neighbours. Not particularly 'royalist' but I'm pleased to join in with a national celebration.

Then I shall be glad to get on with the rest of the weekend as usual!
It's nice to have something cheerful to talk about.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 29-May-22 10:19:35

I’m so glad my village isn’t doing anything. Just the annual (well, annual before covid) Church fete the following Saturday to avoid clashing with other celebrations. Bliss!

I'm confused. Are we celebrating the day the Queen was crowned (1953) or the day of her accession to the throne (1952) or somewhere in between? My (poor) maths makes it 1952, but why June when her father died in February?

It appears that we are celebrating her being sovereign for 70 years.

Though the events starting on the 69th anniversary of her Coronation.

The significant anniversary years of her accession to the throne are usually noted on the news, but not celebrated, as it would be unseemly as it only happened the moment her father passed away.

I remember hearing it on the radio news that it was the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne and that she was spending the day privately with the Queen Mother.

Naturally enough, it was 25 years since the passing of her father and her mother's husband.

^That makes it sound like Blackpool and bingo!!^

I used to go to bingo with my MiL. Loved it. Bought my first tansad, as they were called, with winnings.

I have played on holiday but I'm hopeless, got in a tiz ?

I also used to go to Blackpool - my very first holiday was there

ginny Sun 29-May-22 10:16:15

I’m certainly not miserable or curmudgeonly. I shall enjoy our street gathering and contribute to the refreshments but as some others have said I doubt the Queen will pass through my mind much. I’ll say no more as I don’t want to upset anyone.

I’m not celebrating, I’m not interested in it all. I’m on holiday with my family.

Some do just like a jolly good knees up.

There is a happy medium between avoiding any festivities and
a jolly good knees up as you put it.

That makes it sound like Blackpool and bingo!!

Some of us are rather more sophisticated than that!

if there's one thing I hate it's enforced jollity and bunting. Have your street parties, nobody's stopping you. But we don't all have to join in.

Hear hear! ?

I agree. Some do just like a jolly good knees up. Others don’t. Some are trying to persuade me to go to village celebrations as bringing me back from Covid reclusiveness, butt dd is away and dh won’t go so I wouldn’t want to go on my own anyway. I will be happily doing some gardening.

volver Sun 29-May-22 10:01:24

I won't be peering through my curtains with a "cob on", at people having a nice time. I'll be watching for dolphins from the front of my pod and hoping the seals come into the garden, like last year.

Enjoy your trifle and forelock tugging, though.

Possibly there are those who don’t have the opportunity to have “all the family” round or join a community party ?
Are they to be called miserable when there is soooo much Jubilee stuff on tv etc ? It’s like the “Scrooge “ name calling if people don’t rave about Christmas,

I've only seen one thing on TV and that was the Royal Windsor Horse Show which I enjoyed (mostly).

Is there a lot on TV?

Last night was football ......... ⚽️
I got on with some handicrafts

The year of the Queen’s accession, presumably and June as being a) closer to her “official” birthday, b) the Coronation month, plus possibly c) the likelihood of better weather and maybe d) the absence of any Covid restrictions?
