Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

A crown?

I've got blue trousers and a white top ready. Any suggestions for something red?

A hat.

if there's one thing I hate it's enforced jollity and bunting. Have your street parties, nobody's stopping you. But we don't all have to join in.

Hear hear! ?

IT'S NOT COMPULSORY
No-one is going to be press-ganged into joining in.

I promise not to come and force feed you trifle

Read back. It's quite clear why the date was set.

I'm confused. Are we celebrating the day the Queen was crowned (1953) or the day of her accession to the throne (1952) or somewhere in between? My (poor) maths makes it 1952, but why June when her father died in February?

Presumably because the weather will be better, plus a nod to the coronation date.

Because it's a convenient time.

So that some people can call it a Bank Holiday party?

MawtheMerrier Sun 29-May-22 09:49:21

Oh dear - live and let live?
I rather like HM and get quite teary at brass bands, processions of mounted guardsmen and all that.
But I am not a “joiner- in” so the idea of the enforced jollity of street parties would have me running a mile unless it involved my closest neighbours in which case I would enjoy being actively involved.
Inviting my sis-in-law for the weekend so that I don’t feel a Billy no mates and I might serve Coronation Chicken and my take on that trifle (lemon curd sponge or Swiss roll, lemon posset and cream - no jelly ) and going to a lovely concert at MK theatre of every possible Coronation related piece of choral music
So good luck to those who enjoy this sort of thing. I admit I am enjoying some of the documentaries on TV looking back at the last 70 years.
Is it all over done? Probably- that seems to be the way of things. But I am not going to moan about it any more than I would be likely to wave a Union Jack!

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 09:48:55

All the naysayers can do their own thing but there's no need to try to spoil it for people who do want to enjoy themselves.

Our Republican neighbours are joining in a party because we're having a get together after a few years of misery.

IT'S NOT COMPULSORY
No-one is going to be press-ganged into joining in.

They will take the bank holiday though wont they? Well yes I will as the alternative is to break into an empty school building.

????

Thanks for reminding me, nandad, that DD1 will no doubt be sneaking in a themed quiz at our do. We’re a competitive lot. I’d better get a bit of revision done. smile

Calendargirl Sun 29-May-22 09:34:31

Actually June 1953 Franbern.

I agree with you, I think it’s lovely, we are going to be hanging up our bunting today, and we did our business premises last week.
I enjoy driving around the villages and seeing all the decorations, it brings people together, and who doesn’t love The Queen.

JaneJudge Sun 29-May-22 09:31:58

Lots of people's contracts say they get bank holiday Mondays off/paid. Not Thursdays. Mine included sad so I have to work both

nandad Sun 29-May-22 09:31:52

Not a monarchist but our bunting and flags are going up today. Had it for many years so had our monies worth. Having an afternoon tea street party followed by a bbq with a jubilee themed quiz with friends. Will compile the quiz myself. Food will include a Victoria sponge, coronation chicken and might give a nod to the jubilee desert. We will drink champagne that was bought for a cancelled party. Yes, an excuse to eat, drink and be merry. And I will enjoy every minute of it, even if I can’t taste the food or drink or hear everything that’s being said (long covid).

BlueSky Sun 29-May-22 09:25:29

Thanks nadateturbe. Still remember it and so many other instances. It was his way or no way. Luckily I eventually found the courage to leave but those precious years were lost.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 29-May-22 09:22:45

I would be one of them if I were still working.

Kandinsky Sun 29-May-22 09:21:17

In a poll 54% said they weren't interested in jubilee

They’ll happily take the extra bank holiday though. You won’t hear anyone moaning about that.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 29-May-22 09:20:17

Can we have our bunting back please?!

merlotgran Sun 29-May-22 09:19:21

I could hear my neighbours putting up bunting along the adjoining fence yesterday and this morning was amused to see that it has all blown over to my side. ???????

Bit different to a football.

Grany Sun 29-May-22 09:10:52

In a poll 54% said they weren't interested in jubilee 11% were extremely interested.

A lot of money spent on this jubilee

I will spend the weekend with my daughter and granddaughter happy spending time together.

The Royal Family refer to themselves as ‘The Firm.’ For seventy years, Queen Elizabeth II has increased the family worth many fold and clung to power more successfully than any other Head of State in the last 500 years. They are not the ‘people’s’ Royal Family. They sit at the top of the pyramid of wealth and privilege and are an integral part of the austerity, pain, hunger and poverty inflicted on working people by successive governments backed by their propaganda aides-de-camp in the right wing press.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is fed up with it all. Our street is having a party which I thought was a good idea at first but now it's becoming a bit of a chore. For Charles/Diana's wedding we had a great time where we used to live - no fuss just bring some food and enjoy. Similarly when we'd moved elsewhere the next royal do was celebrated in the street without any proper organisation. Now we have to have all sorts of extras which is OK but fussier. Oh dear! It will probably be good fun in the end

Maggiemaybe Sun 29-May-22 09:08:59

I don’t even remember what we did for either the Silver Jubilee or the Golden one - did we get a day off? I know my lot are happy just to have a long weekend away from work this week, and they’ll make the most of it. We are having a family get-together on Thursday, but we do that whatever the occasion. No doubt the bunting will be up though!
