Fellow Fashionista Grans: do you wear what you like or what you “should?”

Jeans of different colours and crew neck T shirts are my normal day wear. With jumpers in the cooler weather.

Smart trousers and a top if we go out, usually flat shoes as they are comfortable.

I have some longish shorts if the weather gets so hot that I can’t stand trousers, but that’s quite rare as I’m always cold.

If I have to go somewhere formal, I dress accordingly.

As others have said at my age I know what suits me

Black jeans and various too and jumpers, dresses if it's warm enough, golf and netball gear seems to be my usual clothing. Not fashionable usually classic. Too fat and old for fashion.

Nanamar. I also love clothes and still enjoy experimenting a bit despite being 70 plus. I think our sense of style and what is most becoming tends to evolves and change over time. We get to understand what suits us best.

I would probably say my style is now "classic with a twist". Dressing for my body shape, in colours that compliment my hair colouring and skin tones. So I too would say I dress to please myself. I've learned that well cut and tailored garments suit me best, no Frills, or flounces, no gathered waists, nothing too bulky and no black next to my face.

I think that often it's trial and error. We learn from our mistakes.

My advice is to take a photo of yourself. We can look in a mirror and think we look good but the camera might tell a different story.

Capri pants can work well but they have to be slim fitting, not loose and baggy. And the length should not end at your calves / the widest part of the leg.

If I do wear capris I make sure they finish higher, slightly below the knee. You could get ankle grazers which are very fashionable right now. They I don't suit me.

When it's really hot I tend to go for long wide legged pyjama type linen trousers or palazzo style. If you are petite you might feel they swamp you, however With the right shoe they can make your legs look longer. If the trousers are long enough to hide the top of your shoe there's no need to forgo ankle straps.

As we get older comfortable shoes are a must and like you I now feel I need to support my ankles. For that reason I love ankle boots but obviously not in hot weather.

I do think we can't look stylish if we don't feel comfortable or if we feel self conscious therefore I think we do need to dress to please ourselves.

Having read a recent thread about what we shouldn't be wearing, I realise that I do/wear my own thing!

Mostly what is comfortable

I wear what suits my body shape, which isn’t the same as what I like always. For example, round necks do me no favours, and they are everywhere this year - I do like them, just not on me. So I guess I do follow some self imposed rules.

I wear what I like and comfort is my priority.

Apart from wearing a uniform for a job when I was young.
I have never let anything influence how I dress.

I wear what I feel I look good in. If I get a compliment-even better.

I wear what I like, but keep to a certain colour palette. I've lived long enough now to know what suits me. I don't like having my legs on show these days so I stick to trousers and midi length skirts and dresses.
I've never worried about what others think. I please myself.

I wear what I feel good in, my choice of footwear has to suit my partially paralysed side and foot drop. I want to be able to get about without falling or injuring myself. It’s all about confidence really smile

What suits me.

What I like.

I finally wear what I like!

I’m 72 and very short, aka, petite - love clothes and shoes, always have. There are tons of hints out there for petite women - avoid capris, ankle straps on shoes, chunky heels and lug soles - instead wear full length trousers or shorts, high heels, etc. Problem is trousers are too warm at times and my legs aren’t great for shorts, ankle straps help keep my shoes stable, and I can no longer comfortably walk in high heels. Do you follow “rules” for dressing your body shape or just wear what you love?
