Will Charles take the throne.....or not?

So very sadly it won't be very many years before the Queen is no longer with us, so what then? Will Charles take the throne or will he pass it onto William?

I think he will abdicate. It would be a fairly short reign and bearing in mind his age he may consider the people deserve a younger more vibrant King. William is in his middle years so not a youngster, and he and Kate are popular and able to fulfil the role with more vigour. I think Charles will take all this into consideration.

Also, how does Camilla feel about being Queen? That may be another consideration.

I really hope Charles takes the throne so William can spend as much time with his family before he becomes king

Don't like the way Charles runs the Duchy

Grany Sun 05-Jun-22 21:16:11

Unlike the Queen, King Charles will have no sense of caution, only of entitlement

A monarch who does not know his place would be a disaster for an unstable Britain

For some reason a memory of the once ubiquitous Russell Grant emphatically stating on TV that Prince Charles would never be king has stuck with me from the early 80s.

Disclaimer: I am no great fan of Russell or of psychics in general, but I’m still interested to know whether he was right. It was a bold claim for 40 years ago!

William should be our next king and not Charles and Camilla will never be Queen
Totally disagree Purplepixie Camilla has done wonders for Charles she is a lovely lady everyone I know whose met her said what a lovely person she is She doesn’t try to take the limelight she seems calm and sensible and you can see they love each other dearly The Queen has given her blessing too I believe they are good friends
Anniebach you are right Charles has had a rough ride from the awful awful poisonous media
I think he’s a throughly decent man

Anniebach Sun 05-Jun-22 18:58:39

The Queen has made a statement, she will continue to serve with the support of her family

StarDreamer, I found those links useful yesterday, so thank you. I didn’t feel in the least bit “patronised” and can’t imagine why anybody would.

I would add that if Charles chooses to be King then I would support him completely. Life has played him a very mixed hand but I agree he is a kind and decent man. It's entirely his choice whether to take the throne, and I wish him well whatever he chooses. I think he may have a rocky ride as King due to republicans shouting their cause even louder when the Queen has gone. Maybe he will feel that William needs cushioning from this for a few years while we see where the land lies. Maybe he knows he will get the brunt of it after the Queen is gone and would rather William didn't.

Purplepixie Camilla will be Queen, in that she will be called Queen Consort officially as she is not the monarch. She will however be known as Queen Camilla.

That's not how hereditary monarchies work. You get the next in line. No arguments.

I am glad that Charles has found happiness with Camilla. I have always felt that he had a sad and lonely existence as a young person. His obligation to provide an heir and a spare ended disastrously for all those concerned. Imo he has earned a shot at being king but he will have to make some much needed changes if the RF is to survive.

henetha Sun 05-Jun-22 11:40:47

Again, I agree. smile

Anniebach

henetha he has been a victim of the media from a very young age, so many lies printed about him.

Just like George III, it could be argued

Yes, Anniebach, I agree. He is.

I’m not sure why George 111 would be Charles’s favourite ancestor, he did reign for a long time but due to increasing illness had little influence for half of his reign. The title “Farmer George” was applied by politicians of the time and was not complementary.

George III was actually much maligned, and the victim of Jeffersonian and Whig propaganda.

Anniebach Sun 05-Jun-22 11:13:13

Charles is a decent man and a very caring man

The question of the age of the monarch has arisen because of the Queen’s decision to stay on the throne for life. She may well live to be 100. If Charles and William also live to be 100 we will have an aged monarch for generations to come. At least Charles is giving William his place right now and that is a welcome change. I don’t think Charles was ever given that privilege.

Calendargirl Sun 05-Jun-22 09:29:57

I hope Charles sticks to his own name. I know George is one of his four names, but after 70+ years of being known by his first one, it would be jolly confusing thinking of him as his fourth one.

Newquay Sun 05-Jun-22 09:19:04

Grief! The definition of a thoroughly decent man is not one I’d apply to Charles!!

FannyCornforth Sun 05-Jun-22 09:00:26

> So king Charles it will be ...

Not necessarily. He might choose to be King George VII.

I am almost certain that he will do that.
I’m sure that Charles has already said so.

It is in honour of his favourite monarch, George III.

He and his wife, Queen Charlotte, were very popular among the public; and he was known as Farmer George because of his interest in agriculture. One which Charles, of course, shares.
He would also often go about anonymously in public.

Katie59 Sun 05-Jun-22 08:49:18

I was surprised when Charles spoke at the Party last night, it was a rather halting presentation, reading from notes.
William was far more fluent, although I suspect he was using a teleprompter.

Wether Charles takes the throne will depend how long in the future it happens, the Queen could easily reign 5 yrs more.

dolphindaisy Sun 05-Jun-22 08:12:22

One of the endless "experts" being interviewed on TV pointed out that whenever Charles has stood in for the Queen recently Prince William has been with him, I think this will be the future, Charles will be King but William will play a high profile role.
