Tax on Defibrillator

When my husband passed away I put his donations towards 2 defibrillators. What I strongly objected to was paying the VAT on these . I contacted my MP who in turn contacted the person who dealt with this in government ... yes as person donating the defibrillators have to pay VAT ... BUT ... if I went through a charity or business no VAT ... this is taxing peoples lives, if no VAT I could have purchased an extra one to help others ... a good turn does you good ... proud as in Memory of my lovely husband, but why VAT on life saving equipment being donated ... I wonder ...

Firtly, my condolences, Beautiful.
I find that disgusting. I don't remember paying VAT on the nebuliser I donated many years ago to our children's hospital, after we had difficulty accessing one for my toddler son.
I know from experience that you don't pay VAT if a piece of medical equipment is for personal use.

Have you considered starting a change.org petition to highlight this issue?

I think that there is a way to obtain these at zero rate, but you need to contact the supplier. Many businesses are not aware of this, neither it seems is the MP and his advisor.

Look online at VAT notice 1002, that should help start you off.

Can be obtained at zero tax but have to go through a charity or business & I wanted these to be placed where we visited, also good idea Marydoll .

Just googled ... perhaps I shouldn't put names but I will ... just seen 24.2.22 ... Rishi Sunak urged to scrap VAT on defibrillators ... glad I have put my message as getting ideas of here, thanking you, so now I feel I will contact Rishi Sunak myself ... see how things go ...

No I meant you as the customer. There is a form that needs to be completed for you to give to the supplier of the defibrillator, so that they are then able to make the supply at zero rate.
