Been in A and E 6 hours and not seen a doctor. Trying not to scream. Finished my book.

As Lucca had to be so 'patient', I looked up the origin of the word.

"The word patient originally meant 'one who suffers'. This English noun comes from the Latin word patiens, the present participle of the deponent verb, patior, meaning 'I am suffering,' and akin to the Greek verb πάσχειν and its cognate noun πάθος. A sick, injured, wounded, or other person requiring medical and/or dental care or treatment."

I'm glad you were seen eventually, and thanks to the op who suggested packing a hospital bag, I've been meaning to do this for ages.

I should return to being a loony leftie on the N and P threads !(on second thoughts I haven’t the energy !)

Bad idea, save your energy!

That’s good news Lucca.

ixion Sun 19-Jun-22 13:58:45

Yay.
Not only good that you are 'let go' but that you have a reasoned and acceptable response/diagnosis!
Always helps!
Enjoy Matteo, the meal and the vibrant company tonight (and that's just the Cruisers
?)

You know who is on court now …?❤️??

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 19-Jun-22 13:58:21

I was so pleased to read your update. What an ordeal. Have a good rest and recover from it all. All your friends here will be so relieved to have you back.

MawtheMerrier Sun 19-Jun-22 13:57:57

Pain is less now but if it gets worse “just come back

Yeah right, you said, remembering to bring food for three days, several books, three changes of clothes and a fully charged iPad/Kindle/phone!???

Glad things looking up though. Take it gently, we might just let you off galley duty tonight [flowers{flowers

Baggs Sun 19-Jun-22 13:57:57

Hope you can rest now and don't get a recurrence of the pain. What an absolute bore for you. Glad the doc could reassure you.

JenniferEccles Sun 19-Jun-22 13:55:19

I do hope the pain has subsided enough for you to have that planned family meal this evening Lucca
It sounds like just what you could do with after today!
Maybe though you you are so tired you just want to go home and relax.

Sago Sun 19-Jun-22 13:53:11

Huge relief!
Try and enjoy the rest of your Sunday. ?

Kate1949 Sun 19-Jun-22 13:53:02

Good news Lucca. I think you are right SueDonim

JaneJudge Sun 19-Jun-22 13:51:29

I'm glad your pain is more manageable and you are not hogging anything. I can't think of anything worse than being stuck in A&E on a Saturday night/Sunday morning flowers xx

StarDreamer

Have they got an MRI scanner?

????????

Lucca Sun 19-Jun-22 13:48:11

All ok. Approx 7 hours… but an excellent doctor and seems to be a not unpredictable side effect of my op on Thursday. Pain is less now but if it gets worse “just come back”. ???

Thanks for all your messages I feel I’m hogging the poor me section of GN. Maybe I should return to being a loony leftie on the N and P threads !(on second thoughts I haven’t the energy !)

Joseanne Sun 19-Jun-22 13:30:29

flowers Lucca.
We need you back on board soon!

SueDonim Sun 19-Jun-22 13:16:49

I can’t help thinking the idea of appointments at A&E is to give the impression of efficiency, Kate. I had such an appt recently (luckily just an eye problem that turned out to be minor) and it was quick and easy but I got the impression at the hospital that it was just a way of managing access. If you had no appointment, you weren’t allowed in the door. ?

I think nowadays it’s best to be a pessimist with the NHS. Expect the worst so if everything works effectively, it’s a blessing.

JaneJudge Sun 19-Jun-22 13:11:20

I hope you are okay Lucca flowers xx

BlueSky Sun 19-Jun-22 13:07:18

I think it’s a good idea for all of us to have a small bag packed ready for such a trip!

Kate1949 Sun 19-Jun-22 13:01:03

Trouble is our DD naively thought that as she had been given an appointment time that she wouldn't be waiting 8 hours past that time and wasn't prepared.

MawtheMerrier Sun 19-Jun-22 12:59:07

Times have changed admittedly, but Paw was a regular at A&E in the last couple of years of his life . He used to reckon taking a thick book was the guarantee of being seen reasonably quickly.
More seriously, I am eternally grateful he did not have to live through times like these - he just wouldn’t.

If you haven`t been seen yet Lucca, roll on the floor in agony and shout for help.
I hope you get well either way.

You won’t be seen any faster by doing that. My dd works as an A&E medic. Anyone capable of making a lot of noise is deemed to not be in mortal danger and won’t be seen any quicker. Waiting times at the unit she works in have been as long as 17 hours. The only real fix is to employ more staff and no one seems to be doing that.

One thing I learnt from her is that should you need to go to A&E, take food & drink (or cash for food machines), a charged phone and a book.

Lucca I hope you’re feeling more comfortable now. That sounds throughly miserable. flowers

MawtheMerrier Sun 19-Jun-22 12:52:41

I think the issue is the hours patients are there before being seen.
A man on Any Answers yesterday said he was not seen by a Dr until over 11 hours after first calling an ambulance - he had actually had a heart attack. Once he was in Cardiac Care, things moved reasonably quickly but despite accurately describing his symptoms the necessary blood tests etc were not started for I think over 3 hours.

StarDreamer Sun 19-Jun-22 12:47:27

I too hope that Lucca is alright, but surely it is better to be kept in as long as necessary and the clinicians find out what caused the pain rather than be sent home quickly.
