Mobile phones and productivity

Sometimes I like to think they are work related calls, especially for single handed electricians, plumbers and decorators. However, my head tells me most are just for chatting and playing games. A friend told his handyman to turn his phone off, as he was paying him to work, not talk to his friends arranging a night out.
It must have some effect on productivity, surely.

You often hear how people are so busy these days but look at their screen time which states they have been online for 3 hours or more and is nothing to do with work.

Does any one else think the introduction of mobile phones has affected productivity?
This does of course only affect certain occupations.
Last year I had decorators in for two weeks.
Two men the first week and three the second.
Their phones were constantly ringing and they would stop working to answer.

This week we have workmen, lots of them, on our road, they are replacing the gas pipes on the whole of the estate.
It is a big job with lots of disruption.

It seems every time I look out one or other of them is on his phone.
There are three mini diggers and I have seen those stopped for a phone call.

I can’t help thinking that productivity must go down .
Do you agree?
