Church of England -why aren't you asking 'What is a Man?'

(203 Posts)

The Church of England now doesn't know what a woman is, despite successfully managing to discriminate against women for centuries.

Perhaps their minds would focus better if they considered 'What is a man?'

Thank you Doodledog for your explanation, it’s very helpful. Also thanks to Callistemon. I should have asked my husband, he did a Latin/Classics degree (also French but that’s irrelevant here) and he would have explained. I never studied Latin so didn’t know anything about the origin of those words. Of course I’ve heard of trans, it’s in so many every day words, but cis was a new one on me. And of course, like others, I find it rather offensive.

Certainly the suffragettes weren't going to be silenced by men and it's not just men trying to silence us over this Callistemon it's other women toosad.

toscalily Mon 18-Jul-22 16:40:07

Well as my understanding of this Trans "issue" has grown so has my anger and I will no longer be just an observer and intend to challenge that word whenever I see it. I hope I won't have to resort to writing in capitals (online shouty) as considered discussion is preferable.

Callistemon21 Mon 18-Jul-22 15:25:00

For word geeks, the terms 'cis' and 'trans' are Latin prefixes meaning 'over here/on this side' and 'over there/on that side', so Transylvania meant 'on the other side of the wood', where 'sylva' meant 'wood'

To add to that, Cisalpine Gaul means that part of Gaul "on this side of the Alps" and TransAlpine Gaul meant Gaul "on the far side of the Alps" from the perspective of Rome.

(If that helps!)

Good post, Chewbacca
Why should our valid views be silenced?

I'm becoming more subversive by the day FarNorth! The more I'm told to sit down, don't say that, move over, shut up; the louder and more subversive I get!

Certainly the suffragettes were not going to be silenced by men!
It's frightening that the battle for women's voices to be heard still has to continue a hundred years on.

What does cis even mean? Maybe it has a meaning, but I don’t know what it is.

Incidentally, in my earlier post, I meant to say,

Well done to those on this forum……

Not just Well

Apologies.

For word geeks, the terms 'cis' and 'trans' are Latin prefixes meaning 'over here/on this side' and 'over there/on that side', so Transylvania meant 'on the other side of the wood', where 'sylva' meant 'wood'. (It means something I can't explain in chemistry too - that meaning obviously coming long after the original.) So, transpeople are people who have 'crossed over' or transitioned, and so-called 'cis' people are those who have not.
The term 'trans' is not offensive, as it is the term chosen by transpeople, but Trans Rights Activists now insist that they are the sex they want to be, not people in the sex they were born with who have chosen to leave as though they were the other.

'Cis', on the other hand is offensive, as the implication is that we are all born somehow sexless, and are assigned a sex at birth. When this is wrongly 'assigned', those who believe in this view say we can change to the other one, so everyone falls either into the category of 'trans' - people who have changed to the other sex and 'cis' - those who have stayed with their 'assigned' sex. People who reject this and believe that sex is a biological reality, not something that is 'assigned' find being shoehorned into a false category offensive.

(from my post upthread grin)

The adult human female store is run by Kellie Jay Keen, btw, and the profits are used for her campaigning eg Speakers Corner events monthly in London and also in other cities.

Checkout adulthumanfemale.store for a whole range of items - including stickers for if you feel subversive.

grin spot on Doodledog!

I'd like that tee shirt FarNorth and would wear it with pride. My DS bought me this one for Mother's Day this year. I wear it all the time.

Doodledog Mon 18-Jul-22 12:56:48

I agree too, and I'm sure so does Chewbacca - she was being ironic grin.

Mollygo Mon 18-Jul-22 12:55:11

FarNorth

Errr transwomen are NOT women so I'll just continue to say women when I mean women.

Agreed and I like the tee shirt!

Mollygo Mon 18-Jul-22 12:42:38

So if we have to be differentiated, let’s have realwomen and transwomen. Why should those who have misappropriated the word woman (and their supporters) get to choose what we are called. Discrimination against females ! That’s what their action demonstrates.

Chewbacca Mon 18-Jul-22 12:33:22

Errrrr.... trans women are women. That's why we have to be differentiated as cis women. Apparently. hmm I know, I know

Biscuitmuncher Mon 18-Jul-22 12:23:39

Cis women? We are not types of women! We are women!

snowberryZ Mon 18-Jul-22 11:04:17

I don't take Flounces seriously anymore.
Its always the same ones doing the flouncing
And guess what? They ALWAYS come back. Their little 'break' lasts all of 5 minutes
Funny that.
Attention seeking if you ask me.

maddyone Mon 18-Jul-22 10:56:56

Well to all on this forum who are standing up for women. Not ‘cis’ women, but women. I am not a cis woman, I am a woman. I carried, gave birth to, and breast fed three children. I think that is my qualification to be a woman. Carry on with the fight ladies, we are women, not cis women.

Chewbacca Mon 18-Jul-22 10:06:14

Would you call black people and gay people names you know would upset and annoy them?

Funny you should use that phrase Chestnut, because the most prolific user of the term cis frequently questions others as to why they continue to use words or phrases, that they've been told are hurtful or offensive, and yet continue to do so. hmm

Chestnut Mon 18-Jul-22 09:40:04

I would liken the term 'cis woman' to the derogatory terms used for black people and gay people which we consider offensive. So people should consider that before calling us 'cis women'. We find it offensive and have said so. Would you call black people and gay people names you know would upset and annoy them?

Doodledog Mon 18-Jul-22 09:28:48

Welcome to the fold, toscalily.

Another thumbs up from me, Chewbacca. I am also utterly sick of being told that we are bullies, that we 'hound' people off threads, that we are 'unkind'. None of that is true - if people choose to back off because they have no answers, or because they can't back up what they say, that doesn't make us the 'baddies'.

The tern 'cis' is offensive, and we keep saying why - over and over. We are told that TransWomen Are Women (TWAW) but actual women are not - we are 'cis'. Using (or accepting) 'cis' means that we are being forced to buy in to an ideology that we do not believe.

For word geeks, the terms 'cis' and 'trans' are Latin prefixes meaning 'over here/on this side' and 'over there/on that side', so Transylvania meant 'on the other side of the wood', where 'sylva' meant 'wood'. (It means something I can't explain in chemistry too - that meaning obviously coming long after the original.) People who reject this and believe that sex is a biological reality, not something that is 'assigned' find being shoehorned into a false category offensive. We are not being 'unkind', or 'ranting' for saying so.
