But what about the night you actually discover you’ve won the lottery?

So, you’ve called the number, and confirmed your win, what then? I always said I’d keep it to myself, but could I? I think I’d have to tell somebody ( or everybody?)
I don’t keep champagne in the fridge, so no celebratory drinks jut then!
I always wonder what happens in winners’ homes when they see they’ve won.

An older friend (72) of ours won £1.7m a number of years ago.
They told us that they called their son to come and check the numbers before
calling Camelot. When it was confirmed they stayed up all night drinking tea.
It was a couple of days before they needed to go to Camelot's office.
They didn't want publicity but were persuaded to have a gentle publicity which
meant it was only in the local papers and on Camelot's site.
They told a few people and have never been mithered to share.
The biggest spend they did was go to the USA to see their other son who they hadn't been
able to afford to visit for 4 years. First class of course.

Well, I wonder too, Daddima. If you went to a shop to buy champagne the assistant is surely going to smile and enquire, "Something to celebrate?" You'd have to return the smile and give a polite yet non-committal answer. I think. perhaps a white lie is in order.

There's an excellent book by Hunter Davis about the early years of the lottery and its winners which explores that very subject which is worth a read. It needs a 2nd volume - what about it HD if you're on here?

What would I do? Gosh, I'm not sure. I think I'd do the normal thing at such moments - put the kettle on and contemplate the situation.

I wouldn't want to go mad - after all, a Lamborghini on the driveway would be a bit of a giveaway, wouldn't it?

I think I would almost die of excitement if I had a big win on the lottery, impossible to keep to myself and would be on the phone to all the family and friends in five seconds.
Just think of all the good you could do and happiness to spread around.

Oldnproud Tue 12-Jul-22 10:10:20

I would be straight on the phone to my sons, to share the wonderful news with them.
But then I suppose I would have to tell my husband, which to be honest I would rather not for, because I know that we would never agree about what to do with it. sad

Probably just as well it's never going to happen, eh! ?

cornergran Tue 12-Jul-22 10:14:57

I'd have to check and check again, ask Mr C to check - and check again. I'd never believe we could be so fortunate. I think my instinct would be to do nothing for 24 hours, let the belief settle then tell the family, get them to check the numbers before phoning Camelot. Of course it will never happen so no need to worry about it smile.

Davida1968 Tue 12-Jul-22 10:15:32

I think I'd simply sit in shock! Probably for some time. Can't imagine anything else....
I would think that a big win doesn't sink in straight away, however much one may have fantasised about it!

LauraNorderr Tue 12-Jul-22 10:23:26

I’d sit and breathe slowly to get the heart rate down, then I’d yell ‘ORLIN, WE’VE WON’, breathe again. Phone sons and arrange a meeting to make wonderful future plans.
Our daughter-in-law’s parents phoned their three daughters and asked them to come to their house for a meeting, wouldn’t say why. The girls all thought they must have won the lottery but sadly it was to announce that their Dad had had an affair and they were divorcing.
So if you make that phone call at least give them a clue as to whether the news is good or bad.

glammanana Tue 12-Jul-22 11:04:23

I would have to get someone to check the numbers and check again as I wouldn't believe my luck to be honest.
Calling my ACs to tell them after I had got my head together and tell them the good news and go from there.
I do think future x wife of DS1 may change her mind about a divorce when she found out hmm

Blossoming Tue 12-Jul-22 11:10:31

Well I wouldn’t be posting in here for one thing grin

I think I’d be quite shocked.

Mogsmaw Tue 12-Jul-22 11:18:27

Well, I’ve got the champagne on ice! .
There is always a bottle of fizz in the fridge. We joke is for the lottery win but there is always something to celebrate.
Last bottle went “because it was Wednesday!”

sazz1 Tue 12-Jul-22 11:33:54

I'd ring my 3 AC and tell them I'd won some money and pay the mortgage off for 2 that have their own houses. Then give money of same value to the 3rd who doesn't want their own property, wants to travel, and rents a flat. Depending on how much it was I'd also give cash to all 3. Then put money in an account for DGC, buy a flat in Paris and book a cruise
Wouldn't tell anyone how much it was.

Urmstongran Tue 12-Jul-22 11:36:55

I’m really good at keeping secrets (mine and any that friends share) so I think I’d sit on it alone for a few hours to absorb the enormity of the news. Mull it all over for a bit as to be honest the odds of it happening at all would be millions to one against. I wouldn’t go to Camelot. Why tell everyone? I like my life and would only like riches to share and enhance not to change hugely. I’d pretend we’d had a smaller win or that an insurance investment had matured. Money would mean that for me, I’d go for ‘experiences’ not stuff.

LauraNorderr Tue 12-Jul-22 11:47:42

?because it’s Wednesday
I like your style Mogsmaw

henetha Tue 12-Jul-22 11:51:00

I did win £3.60 the other day and kept it to myself grin
I can't imagine what I'd do if I won the jackpot. Tell my sons first I think. And then.... panic grin

H1954 Tue 12-Jul-22 11:59:02

I would be incommunicado for a couple of weeks whilst deciding what to do with the money.

Jaxjacky Tue 12-Jul-22 12:02:09

I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 12-Jul-22 12:22:54

I guess I’d have to do the lottery to be able to win anything.

If I won anything I’d keep it quiet, although expecting everyone in the family and extended family not to mention it would probably be asking too much.

If I won the huge amounts that are being talked about, it would scare me to death that my family could be targeted by ne’er do wells.

I’m sure people at the bank would raise an eyebrow at squillions of £s going into our account. Would they keep it quiet ? I wonder.

Floradora9 Tue 12-Jul-22 21:49:18

I remember when I was young a neighbour checked their football pools and thought they had won a considerable amount. My mother told me that the couple were up all night planning what new fireplace they would buy ( the height of sophistication then ) . In the end it turned out so many people had also won that their prize money was very little .

Grandmabatty Tue 12-Jul-22 22:20:10

I would be absolutely stunned, mainly because I don't do the lottery! ?

Grandyma Tue 12-Jul-22 23:23:27

I’d definitely need dh to make me a cuppa and pour himself a large one. Then I’d ring my dd’s to come to the house. I’d need to tell them face to face. We’d probably sit up all night in disbelief/shock & excitement!!

MissAdventure Tue 12-Jul-22 23:31:16

I can't help but think it might be a bit of an anti climax.

You've won, but well...
Not that I'd turn it down, of course.

Grandma2213 Wed 13-Jul-22 02:16:52

I remember in the early days of the lottery I used to listen to the results on TV live. Once my first 3 numbers came out and I thought I was going to have a heart attack!!!! Luckily or unluckily that was it! I did win £10 that time though have rarely had any luck since. We can dream though can't we?

HeavenLeigh Wed 13-Jul-22 07:48:36

Well I wouldn’t go public that’s for sure, depending on the amount I’m sure ppl would speculate anyway. Even when moving to different area, it would be wonderful to be able to spread so much happiness to family friends and charity’s, but hey ho we wouldn’t be that lucky! The most I’ve won is 4o pound on scratch card I was over the moon
