I have lots of california poppies in my garden which currently are developing seed pods. I find many pods on the ground where they have split and dispersed their seeds. If you pick them when they look dry they pop and split in your hand and your palm is filled with tiny black seeds. The pop is audible and made me jump the first few times it happened!!!? I am collecting the pods and putting in paper envelopes so I can sow them in other parts of the garden. Isn't nature wonderful!!!

It really is travelsafar. Poppies also seem to seed in the most inhospitable places. I’ve tried for years to grow Welsh poppies in my garden, with no success - I think the soil must be too fertile. However, I’ve now got three seedlings from my neighbour’s house across the road which have spontaneously popped up in about quarter inch deep, dry soil at the side of my drive. I’m planning to just leave them to see if they make it.
