Jewellery - how much, and how often?

I received a few nice necklaces for my recent birthday, and found a lovely wee shop in Brighton where I bought a couple more, so I have decided to make an effort to wear them.
My friend always wears jewellery to match what she is wearing ( even if she’s staying in!), whereas I only wear my wedding and engagement rings, an emerald birthstone ring, and earrings if I remember.
What do you wear?

I usually don't wear any jewellery, not even my wedding ring. I tried but I found it bothersome and never got used to it. I've put it down to not liking my very practical hands to be "cluttered up" in any way at all. Even their feeling sticky (e.g. from the ubiquitous covid hand sanitisers) is cluttersome to me.

I do have some pearls and a platinum gold, close-fitting necklace that MrB bought me that I wear when in the least bit "dressed up" (which is not very often nowadays – not much call for it on a boggy brae), but after my mum died I wore two of her little necklaces – tiny pearls and a silver chain – (which she had copied from my style when I had more occasion to dress up) every day for several months. It felt like a connection that I seemed to need at the time.

I have loads of earrings but everyday I wear the same pairs of studs and hoops (2 sets of piercings in ears). If I'm not going out I wear a watch and some silver celtic-inspired rings. Plus wedding and engagement rings.

Probably the piece I wear most often if going out is a torque-style gold-coloured necklace. It doesn't dangle and brightens up my face a bit but is fairly plain so doesn't look overdressed.

My daughter is starting to ditch her silver jewellery in favour of gold, so I'm hanging on to the gold pieces that I like. However, I did sort through my jewellery a few years ago and took anything broken, unloved or missing it's pair and weighed them in for cash. I was delighted with how much I got, much more than I thought! My daughter inherited a huge sapphire and had enough bits and bobs of gold jewellery that she didn't wear to provide a setting for a lovely bespoke modern ring.

I’m not really a fan, the only jewellery I wear regularly is twisted gold earrings, which I don’t take off at all unless I swap them out for a fancier pair to go out in. I don’t wear rings, I lost my wedding ring while I was loading stuff into a garden waste skip at the recycling plant years ago and as I’m a widow I haven’t replaced it, not being keen on rings generally. I like scarves though.

Why not Witzend you may be able to get a decent holiday out of your collection.

Witzend Fri 15-Jul-22 12:34:06

Pearl stud earrings every day, and a neutral necklace - currently one made of several twisted strands of tiny white ceramic beads.
Wedding ring and emerald/diamond ‘engagement’ ring, that was actually ‘birth of dd2’ ring.

I have quite a lot of gold chains etc. that I haven’t worn for ages - I don’t care for the look of gold any more. I should probably flog the lot!

MawtheMerrier Fri 15-Jul-22 12:15:30

Sadly “real” jewellery can look very ageing so the pearls are usually ditched in favour of a bold bead necklace although I do sometimes wear a simple gold chain necklace Paw gave me years ago
I wear a large sapphire and diamond ring of my mother’s along with my wedding ring as sadly my opal engagement ring is too tight over my knuckles. On my right hand I wear Paw’s Wedding ring and my MIL’s diamond engagement ring.
All the rest sits in the safe or jewellery boxes in a filing cabinet which is such a shame. I really ought to make more effort!

I have a few bits and pieces mostly rings and necklaces honestly I don’t wear any of it, I rarely dress up and jewellery feels like accessories to nice dressy clothes so I don’t bother. I don’t even wear my engagement or wedding rings.

Nor me Tanith
I can’t get my wedding or engagement rings on and their style won’t allow enlarging them.
I have quite a few pieces of gold and costume jewellery, I used to wear jewellery every day when I was working, but I rarely bother nowadays.

Just a couple of comments:- it’s easy to ask a jeweller to rhodium plate a ring to turn it from yellow (gold) to white. Costs about £30 and lasts a few years before it needs plating again. I do that with Mums 22ct wedding ring that I wear all the time.
Also, if you have any decent jewellery that isn’t specified on your household insurance, it’s worth taking a picture (phone will do) of yourself wearing it, to show in case of a claim for loss or theft. I learned that the hard way.

MrsKen33 Fri 15-Jul-22 10:44:31

I have three silver rings and a gold wedding ring that I always wear. Earrings I change daily depending on what I am wearing, and apart from my wedding ring all my jewellery is silver.

PinkCosmos Fri 15-Jul-22 10:06:57

I wear a thin silver necklace and a slim stainless steel watch.

I have some lovely rings with diamonds but they are set in gold and I went off gold in favour of silver a few years ago.

I have both my grans and mums wedding rings plus my own. However, I am not sure which is which now.

I have a lot of costume jewellery, some fine jewellery and some lovely vintage 1950's bracelets. I never wear any of them.

paddyann54 Fri 15-Jul-22 09:43:39

I've a large jewellery box and two drawers full of jewellery that has rarely been out of its boxes,
I wear a small sapphire pendant every day and my wedding ring .If I'm going out I wear either white diamond stud earrings and my 3 stone diamond emgagement ring or yellow diamond cluster earrings with a yellow diamond 5 stone ring that my OH bought me
.On ocassion my mothers pearls ,a long "flapper" style that her parents gave her for a special birthday and the matching bracelets .
My late MIL had 5 jewellery boxes full of nice jewellery that was supposed to be shared between the family, she left a list .Sadly her daughter has decided it was her mum so she's keeping it ,so I'm letting my daughter and GD's split mine up now to make up for not getting the pieces Nana had promised them

luluaugust Fri 15-Jul-22 09:26:45

Dangly or stud earrings every day, necklace, usually costume jewellery and bright, wedding ring and a watch. My two DD's tend to buy me earrings or a necklace and I love hunting around secondhand/antique shops where I often find stones amongst the plastic jewellery.

foxie48 Fri 15-Jul-22 09:26:43

I always wear earrings, usually silver and since growing my hair I have bought a couple of pairs that make more of a statement. I usually wear a thin silver necklace but will wear something bigger and bolder when dressing up a bit. I've got quite a few items with pearls which I like. I inherited some very pretty pieces from my MIL and again will wear them when going out but I'm not wearing gold ATM, just doesn't seem to suit me.

Dee1012 Fri 15-Jul-22 09:24:45

I wear a gold ring my mum bought me for my 21st and my dads signet ring...neither are ever removed.

I also have my grans engagement / eternity rings which I wear occasionally.

Charleygirl5 Fri 15-Jul-22 09:24:11

Wedding ring and a watch. I do not possess anything else because everything I owned or inherited was stolen so I did not intend to have a repeat performance, ever.

Mollygo Fri 15-Jul-22 09:18:58

Earrings everyday, none of them are big and they fit neatly in one of those pill boxes, 1 pair per day. Rings which I never take off.
I have a few necklaces, either expensive or fashion, which I like to match with the earrings.

Greyduster Fri 15-Jul-22 09:10:13

I very rarely wear anything round my neck although I have some lovely pendants and special locket that was my fortieth anniversary present. I only wear it occasionally. Much of the jewellery that DH bought me when we first married was stolen in a burglary, and what we replaced it with, while very nice, isn’t the same. What I do like to wear is a small silver Blue John pendant that my sisters in law bought me as a thank you when they came to stay with us. It’s an attractive shape and the stone is a more modern cut than the usual ones. Despite having my ears pierced long ago, I’ve never got on with earrings. Other than that, it is my wedding ring, eternity ring, and a small gypsy ring on my left pinkie.

Jaxjacky Fri 15-Jul-22 08:23:46

Wedding ring, eternity ring on left hand, keeper ring on right hand and a plain watch. Gold chain with cross, it was my Mum’s, that’s my lot.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 15-Jul-22 07:58:21

I love earrings and have many pairs. I always match them to what I’m wearing each day. I wear a gold wedding ring and that is usually it. My sapphire engagement ring, eternity ring and Ruby wedding ring don’t fit my fingers any more. I always wear a brooch on whatever jacket I’m wearing. I have pearls and other necklaces, but don’t often wear them. For my 21st birthday I was given a silver charm bracelet, which over the last 40+ years I have filled with charms, it is too heavy to wear now! OH used to bring me back beautiful charms from his overseas trips. One piece of jewellery which I would love to have (but where would I wear it?) is a tiara.

tanith Fri 15-Jul-22 07:35:39

DanniRae Fri 15-Jul-22 07:32:56

I don't often take my silver, stud earrings out and always wear a gold wedding ring which was my husband's aunts - my original one is far too wide. Since I became grandma for the second time I wear a silver chain with my grandchildren's names on silver hoops. I have some beautiful rings that my darling mum left me but don't wear them because my hands are so old and wrinkly!

notgran Fri 15-Jul-22 07:29:52

Love wearing jewellery and I am rarely without earrings, bracelets and rings. My M-i-L gave me money to buy some jewellery recently and I spent more than I ever have before on gold ring, necklace and earrings, (matching). I wear my Mum's and her sister's engagement rings and I actually am on the same husband but 3rd wedding ring as I have lost the previous 2. I wear pearls quite a lot as they are my birth stone and enjoy adding to the collection of charms on my Nomination bracelets. Even during lockdown I still carried on choosing each day what combination of jewellery to wear. If I am wearing a particular colour combination I will choose the colour stone etc to match it. sunshine

Georgesgran Fri 15-Jul-22 07:29:28

Love a bit of bling! I bought diamond studs in lockdown and have worn them (almost) ever since - they are screw back, so no risk of losing one. Still wear my diamond wedding band and a similar watch. At the moment I’m wearing a large aquamarine pendant, as that’s my birthstone. I always wear DM’s wedding ring on my right hand and will add a gemstone ring to match my pendant of choice. All white gold, which suits my skin tone better than yellow.

BlueSapphire Fri 15-Jul-22 07:19:52

Always wear jewellery; have quite a lot bought my lovely late DH. I treat myself occasionally now if I see something I like.

I have two piercings in each ear, so one pair is always studs, gold, pearl or diamond, and the other pair is something more decorative. Always wear wedding and engagement rings, and a multi-coloured-stone ring on the other hand. Always have a plain gold necklace on, and a simple gold bangle bought by late DH. And to go with my username DH bought me a beautiful vintage sapphire bracelet one Christmas.

DH was ever so pleased when I had my ears pierced, as it solved the problem of birthday and Christmas presents! He knew that ear-rings would always go down well!
