We put our bins out the night before and balance a brick on top of the food compost bin. It has been knocked over by foxes in the past.

I have assisted collection which means I just leave my bins in their usual place, the lovely bin men take them down the drive, empty them and put them back (nearly). Free of charge too. Well done Spelthorne Council.

MissAdventure

Unfortunately bags aren't fox proof, and they'll tear open any and every one left out, here.

Woe betide us if we put anything that even smells of food eg tinfoil in the plastic/tin recycling bag because the seagulls will rip the bags open and scatter the contents everywhere.

Then it is not your responsibility should scavengers rip the bags open.Take photos should this happen and present to those who (eye roll ) make these rules

We have foxes wandering around all the time here; they aren't the least bit threatened by human presence.
I had to have a stand off with one to stop him going into my flat the other evening.

He won. He pooped all over my doormat.

I'm sorry MissA but that did make me laugh ? We get foxes through every night but they run a mile if we appear. Or hide in the bushes until we have gone. Luckily we have bins not bags, or I suspect we would have the same problem.

We have small plastic food bins with lids and if one puts the handle upright that locks the bin and keeps the foxes out but if it is windy it can travel a fair distance being small and light.

The contract changed recently and our binmen have been coming around 5.30 am before the heatwave. I have always put my bins out the night before.

Kate1949 Fri 15-Jul-22 14:56:56

We always put ours out the night before. Everything is in bins with lids, so no worries re foxes.

Georgesgran Fri 15-Jul-22 14:46:54

Actually, our bins are being emptied later than usual. They used to come early Tuesday morning, but it’s been much later recently. Being on my own, I don’t put mine out every time anyway.

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jul-22 14:41:28

We have large communal bins for our use in the council flats.
They arent really big enough for our needs, but we manage.
It's the private houses over the road who bring their rubbish bags over.
And their bulky rubbish.
And walk their dogs and dont pick up after them.
And their big glass recycling boxes full of wine bottles.

Chestnut Fri 15-Jul-22 14:14:44

We have large plastic bins for landfill and recycling, and smaller brown caddies for food waste which lock shut. So no animals can gain access to anything.

It is ridiculous for local authorities NOT to provide safe storage for rubbish especially where there are foxes. Why can't they put large communal bins along the street for people to put their bags, the type used by businesses. Better that than black bags being ripped open.

We always put ours out the night before anyway And AFAIK our food waste bins are fox-proof. We’ve never had the contents scattered, anyway, and I’ve never seen that any of the neighbours’ bins have been raided either. And there are a lot of foxes around here!

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jul-22 13:55:38

The houses here have to take their bags out of their bins and leave them on the pavement.
They usually fetch them over and leave them on our side, rather than outside their own places.

tanith Fri 15-Jul-22 13:55:07

We got notice the binmen are starting at 5am next week but as its all in bins and put out the night before it wont be a problem

M0nica Fri 15-Jul-22 13:50:35

Yes, we are the same, ours arrive early so we put the bins out overnight.

We live in a village and have foxes and the like in the back garden. We have no problem with them getting in the rubbish because it is in green or black bins or small green food recycling bins where when the handle is put down in one direction it locks it shut.

Galaxy Fri 15-Jul-22 13:50:18

You cant compete with that MissA.

MawtheMerrier Fri 15-Jul-22 13:45:28

Ours have to be out by 7 am so everybody puts them out the night before anyway.

Galaxy Fri 15-Jul-22 13:44:56

I dont mean to be funny but why do you do that. You are paying for a service and not using it.

MissAdventure Fri 15-Jul-22 13:44:10

It should be fun here.
They're requesting the rubbish is put out the night before, so there will be carnage when the foxes find out.

infoman Fri 15-Jul-22 13:42:12

hearing some local authority's could turn up earlier than normal over the next few days, due to the very high tempertures expected.
What we now do is take our
recycling items(food waste excepted) to the local supermarket when we do the shopping and dispose of the recycling items there.
