The Times has listed 10 places to go to in a heatwave. Some of them may be a little impractical though!
Popping up to Inverness for example!

However museums, churches, cinemas and supermarkets seem like a good idea. I was in a church yesterday and it was very cool. A lot of them sell sell refreshments but if yours doesn’t then take a flask, a book and a couple of cushions then chill.

Staying at home and indoors. There are many cool spots in our Edwardian house. I have our 8 year old DGD here: permission was given to miss school today and tomorrow and as she is running a slightly raised temperature anyway, keeping cool at home seemed wise.
Our home schooling centred around taking pics on Snapchat then improving her computer skills by teaching her to make a collage on PS Elements!
Later, early evening, we may take a dip in the paddling pool when the garden is shady.

This morning I was in my local library. Cool, quiet, welcoming & pleasant!

Not going anywhere today. The umbrella is over my garden bench so I’ll be sitting in the shade with a cold drink, reading, drawing and colouring to my heart’s content. May put my feet in a bowl of cool water too. Oh and I have a lovely neck fan which works a treat! Salads prepared in fridge again, although it does feel too hot to eat anything.

Nipped out to Aldi first thing and very busy, think everyone else had the same idea!

Off on my bike to collect my Avon brochures and in the house with the fan on and going to crash under the conifers in the garden in the shade with some knitting and reading. That's it for the day for me.

I should be bowling this afternoon. But I'm sat here, in a cool and shady living room, posting on GN.

Funnily enough no-one complained about the water temperature at aqua-aerobics this am!

Friend of ours, works for Sky VIP, is working on the roof of Buckingham Palace, must be baking.

Yes, think of all those working outside in the heat.

I’m not going anywhere. Sitting at home with the air cooler fan my son gave me. It has water in it, which evaporates and gives a lovely blast of cool vapour.

PamelaJ1, I think it's just far safer to just stay indoors today. The council here are sending out road gritters (to sprinkle sand) as there are concerns about tarmac melting - on the local roads, not motorways. Still, there's always that small chance that your car/bus/train may be delayed or break down, leaving you stranded in the heat.

Do agree with you if you have a cool house. Better to find an alternative if you haven’t.

Staying at home. We have an East facing house and the sun has nearly disappeared from our living room. There is a breeze blowing outside and we plan to have lunch on our shady patio under the parasol that we have never used.

Blinko. ….. it’s going to be hotter tomorrow!

Midday onwards, yes, but first thing, around 6.30am I think it will be cooler...

Lizzies Mon 18-Jul-22 11:49:27

I have booked to go and see The Railway Children Return this afternoon. Hopefully it will be nice and cool in the cinema.

WH Smiths near me has full aircon. It's wonderful. Can only spend so long in there though before I get suspicious looks.

foxie48 Mon 18-Jul-22 11:45:43

I rode out early this morning and it was glorious with a bit of breeze and not too hot, however my lunchtime pilates class has been cancelled. It's currently 88F outside but a pleasant 72F in my kitchen so I'll stay indoors. I have an evening art class but it's in a lovely stone built village hall with a high ceiling so I guess it will be fairly cool.

Staying in my cool house today but going out this evening to sit in a friends garden for my favourite WI sub group - gin club! Plenty of ice and lemons, chilled gin, bliss!

Jaxjacky Mon 18-Jul-22 11:11:51

Chiller is primed to be switched on later, we have high cloud, 29.
As I put on another thread, we had 31 a year ago.

I would normally do my weekly shop today but tested positive for Covid yesterday, so have texted my list to Ddil who will be in the vicinity tomorrow.

Feeling really groggy so shall spend the day as I did the weekend on the couch in as much shade as possible, texting everyone I have appointments with this week to let them know I can't come.

BlueBalou Mon 18-Jul-22 11:00:02

Thankfully I shouldn’t be anywhere today ?, so I am lolling on my bed, reading a book whilst the new flooring is being installed downstairs. DDog is shut in the kitchen, which is lovely and cool, with the back door wide open so she can go out in the garden. DH is around somewhere.
Perfectly happy here!

annodomini Mon 18-Jul-22 10:53:57

Dentist's appointment but only Hygienist, so not painful. I've been expecting a call to tell me not to come, but no such luck. At the moment the thermometer says 32 in the sun, but it's still nice and cool in the shade.

Squiffy Mon 18-Jul-22 10:45:02

Should have been sitting under the shady canopy of the beautiful silver birch tree at our local Wethy’s, having a late Wethy’s breakfast! Instead, it’s the usual DIY breakfast at home!

lixy Mon 18-Jul-22 10:39:14

That's the trouble - it does look OK and has wonderful stripy caterpillars on it for the cinnabar moth but it is fatally poisonous for horses, and so needs to be moved from open areas.
If you have ragwort please enjoy it, but cut off the flowers as they go over so it doesn't send seed out everywhere.

fairfraise Mon 18-Jul-22 10:35:22

We haven't mowed the lawn for a while, and have a tall clump of ragwort which looks OK if you didn't know it was a weed!

lixy Mon 18-Jul-22 10:08:51

I should be going to a volunteering ragwort bash at a local open space - but I am staying home, moving the sun umbrella around to shade the windows.
The ragwort will have to wait until next week!
