‘Thousands of deaths’

Oh what’s wrong with people ? What about the majority of countries in the world where we have very hot weather every single year ? I haven’t heard of large numbers of deaths because of it, even in ‘third world’ countries. Load of rubbish. Of course there will be a few, just as there are when it is freezing cold. They need to get a life.

I agree, nanna8.

DD messaged at 6am to ask if I wanted to postpone my garden party/get together this evening because I might find it too much.

Is she kidding??? Very considerate of her but my fridge is groaning with food that just needs some final touches, I washed the patio furniture and swept the paths at 6am and housework’s up to date. It’s DGS’s birthday and his in laws gave him a cheeseboard set so I’ve bought him a selection of fancy cheeses, pickles and chutney. My fridge smells divine but I’ll be more stressed by putting it all on hold until…when?

I’ve told them all not to worry…The Pimms will be nice and cold! ?

I’m not being unsympathetic to those who struggle with the heat but we’ve got to get used to this!

Stop being such snowflakes, going into meltdown just because warnings are been given about dangers that you are already aware of!

It doesn't hurt you, and it will almost certainly save a few lives, so what harm is it doing you? Why let it bother you so much?

It's just advice, and you are free to ignore it.

Chill out!

This morning a doctor giving advice on how to sleep better during the heatwave suggested discarding the duvet!!! Who'da thought it??????

Yes, Daily Mail online is also telling us to ditch the duvet. Do we really have to be told?!!

Vintagejazz Tue 19-Jul-22 09:19:13

You would think but there's always foolish people who won't put hats on small children, or will sit out for hours in the garden with no protection, or will leave a baby sleeping in the car while they just 'nip in to the shopping centre', or will head off on a long hike with no bottled water or sun cream and will in many ways put themselves or their children at risk and use up valuable NHS resources and emergency services because they just didn't think.

I'm fed up of newscasters etc telling us how hot it is and tips to keep cool ,it's mainly common sense !

During the summer if 1976 there were twenty thousand excess deaths. So, yes, it is expected that the current heatwave will cause a raise in these this year.

Back in 1976 those of us on here were young (many even children), and such things as those figures really do not really penetrate that age group then or now.

It is we age we get more aware of our own mortality. No point in getting scared!!! We all have to die sometime. We can, however, help ourselves in the current situation - lots of non-alcoholic fluid to be consumed, stay indoors as much as possible. no great excess exercise, drink more fluids (know I have repeated this, but it is probably THE most important thing. If you do go out, wear a hat, sunglasses, and use an umbrella to keep of sun.

Sardinia has about 534 people aged over 100. Just saying. It must be very cold in Sardinia. LOL.

AmberSpyglass Mon 18-Jul-22 23:21:30

The point is, this isn’t usual for the UK and our infrastructure isn’t set up to cope with it. And in countries where it is common, they usually stay out of the worst of the heat because they understand the dangers.

pieinthesky Mon 18-Jul-22 22:56:33

Most people, by the time they reach the age to be “vulnerable” have leant some common sense and do we really need to be told time and time again how to keep safe in a heatwave. More important would be teaching teenagers the danger of swimming in reservoirs etc in this hot weather. I have just heard on the news of yet another boy who has gone missing while swimming. This must be heartbreaking for his parents and all children should be made aware of the risks.

JenniferEccles Mon 18-Jul-22 22:56:07

It is completely ridiculous scaremongering. Virtually the entire tv news at six tonight was taken up by the newsreader telling us that it had been hot despite the fact that the much hyped 40 deg wasn’t reached!
Yes of course it’s been in the mid to high 30s which is pretty unusual for this country, but by Wednesday we are forecast to be back in the mid 20s, and here in the south west where we are currently on holiday, the cooler weather apparently arrives tomorrow with showers possible.

If I get told one more time to stay in the shade and drink plenty of water, I shall spontaneously combust!!

maddyone Mon 18-Jul-22 22:43:51

There probably will be some deaths sadly, but I’m sure the number some are predicting are wildly inflated.

BlueBelle Mon 18-Jul-22 22:31:18

Don’t worry honeysuckle thousands of people die every week in the U.K.
( I still have my hot water bottle (hot) for my feet at night they always feel cold even in a heatwave)….see I m weird

Lucca Mon 18-Jul-22 22:31:04

I d t think it’s just two days, there could be more to come.
I also don’t think it’s s scaremongering, people went/go abroad For hot weather yes, but to places with swimming pools, air con, shady terraces

Serendipity22 Mon 18-Jul-22 22:24:44

Honeysuckleberries

Apparently the MET office is predicting thousands of deaths.

Does anyone know how or why?

Is this just more scaremongering?

Why do companies say these sort of things, particularly after we’ve dealt with covid.

I’m so sad at being scared all the time.

I am using an ingenious idea and its FANNNNNNNTASTIC.

Fill hot water bottle with COLD water and put in freezer.... take to bed when frozen ORRRRR HOLD IT DURING THE DAY..
FANNNNNNNTASTIC IDEA.

I don't know what to make of the fact that the media seems hooked on scaring us half to death.

My parents paid thousands to go abroad in the 60's and 70's just to enjoy temperatures like these!

Try not to worry Honesuckleberries A fan, cold drink and possibly sun screen should sort you out.

The whole world has gone mad.

Casdon Mon 18-Jul-22 22:14:08

It’s not hype or scaremongering, sorry to have to say so. People die every year in the UK from heat related causes, and they are predicting up to 10,000 deaths from the current heatwave. However if you follow all the advice you can minimise your own risk.

halfpint1 Mon 18-Jul-22 22:13:34

There was a heatwave of a few weeks in France in 2003, nobody expected the 11,000 deaths of mainly old people.

Hetty58 Mon 18-Jul-22 22:08:25

Don't be scared - just follow all the sensible advice to stay cool and hydrated. There are far more deaths caused by cold weather that hot spells in the UK. Perhaps the MET people were alarmed by the (2003, I believe) heatwave mortality in France. Those living alone in top storey apartments were most at risk.

The way I see it - is that people regularly enjoy holidays in similar temperatures - so how can it be so dangerous?

MerylStreep Mon 18-Jul-22 22:05:30

If your health is compromised by the heat ( it’s only one more day) then I can maybe understand the worry. Other than that I don’t see why.
Choose not to be scared.

rafichagran Mon 18-Jul-22 22:04:57

Please dont worry. It's a couple of days.

Smileless2012 Mon 18-Jul-22 22:01:18

It's ridiculous. Some of us have been remembering the heatwave in 1976 and it went on for weeks. This is just for a few days.

It's sometimes better to ignore the news Honeysuckleberries if it upsets and scares you. Try not to worry flowers.
