“That’ll see me out”

One of my father’s favourite phrases, whether applied to a suit, coat, lawnmower or camera!
Today I took delivery of a new coat (White Stuff sale, £60 off) and found myself thinking just that. So what else will “see me out” ?
Is Rosie to be my last dog, am I on my last cooker/ fridge/ sofas / dining table etc?
Obviously not my washing machine or dishwasher - they will conk out the minute I feel a bit short of money and the car… who knows but I do hope I might run to an EV in a couple of years.
What will “see you out” ?

I brought the same coat last October did get it I believe at 20% off the original selling price just reminded me I had it only worn in twice
Hope it doesn’t see me out lol
I am only 5’2 but I have to be careful what I wear it with as it’s quite short

*Doodledog*, I find that White Stuff are true to size.
I didn't pay the full price, but you certainly got a better bargain than me.
I love that coat!

Dare I tell you that I got a further 20% off? I got it for £41.95 including delivery grin.

*Blossoming^, DH bought that car too and says that this will be his last!

My neighbour will be 94 next month and is always buying stuff for her house and garden.

My cats. I'm late 50s. I imagine they'll be my last, if they both live a full life.

This why, at 82, I daren’t get another cat. It would almost certainly outlive me. I’ve been saying this for ten years or so.

We bought a new Honda CRV-EX last year. I didn’t consciously think ‘this will see me out’ but realistically it will. I no longer drive, we thought carefully about what car to buy, Mr. B is very happy with it and we have always looked after our cars and kept them for around 10 years or more.

We had to replace our shower last week and decided we didn't need a 25 year guarantee! ?

Maw I actually looked at that coat, it's lovely and won't date. I have one of White Stuff's reversible ones, bought a few years ago and get lots of compliments, when I wear it.

It's now reduced from over £200 to £50 on the Otrium site.

I've just ordered that, Marydoll - thanks for the heads up. I hope it fits, but they have extended the returns window, so I can send it back if not.

rewiring is starting here next week- that will help sell the house whenever. I intended to get my money's worth out of it.

Shoes last me a long time mainly because I can no longer walk very far so the last two pairs I bought from Hotter and have not been worn yet will definitely see me out.

I agree with Maw that white goods such as washing machines and dishwashers should last longer but as we all know it is usually more cost-effective to replace. they are unlikely to see me out.

It is a phrase I never intend to use.

My father lived into his early 90s fit in mind and body until his last, short illness, did for him. Three of his siblings have got into their 90s healthy and well. The youngest, now 95, is still with us, and joined us for a family meet-up only three weeks ago. It was a journey of over 100 miles both ways. She came with her daughter and was part of the event, chatting to everyone and knowing who we are.

I am 78, fit and healthy, in mind and body and I see no reason, at the moment why I should not emulate the older generation of my family..

It does cross my mind & I've thought "Good grief, I have so many socks, will I get to use them all?"
I won't let it put me off buying something that will bring joy, or comfort, though.

Does this include the life-span of the other half?

Bought a hybrid car last year as our other car was too low for me, yes it is expected to see us out. Reality we thought as Mr C is coming up 80 and I am often in too much pain to drive.

We’re definitely not thinking that way about other things. A quote for a new window is on its way because it would make life easier if the opening was different, we’re looking for new chairs for the conservatory, contemplating a new carpet in the sitting room and searching for a carpenter to make a bespoke coffee table. All because it will enhance our lives. Ann if the things you are thinking about will enhance your life and the funds are there please don’t talk yourself out of them. You deserve them smile.

A few days ago, looking for extra towels after we'd been swimming in the sea and having a hose-down in the garden, I pulled out the towels I bought in 1982 after my very first 'proper' pay check. It was John Lewis's and they cost a small fortune. They're a faded sunny yellow, much washed and no longer luxurious. For years I've been thinking I must throw them out. Now I've turned into my mum and grandparents, and have a 'they'll see me out' kind of attitude.

Iam64 Mon 25-Jul-22 15:38:03

Lovely coat Maw and what a bargain. You can buy another with what you saved on this beaut.
I bought a year old mini hybrid recently. Definitely had the will this see me out on that one.
When I was 65, I bought a spaniel cross puppy. The idea was he’d see me into my 80’s, if I’m lucky enough to last that long. He has to be put to sleep aged 6 because of an inoperable tumour. It was desperately sad.
my current dogs are 4 and almost 2. They’re in the will - along with a bit of cash towards their keep. I try not to think about being seen out by them

Oh, tell me about it.
I have been thinking very seriously about turning my dining room into a bedroom for me so that I am self contained on one floor but keep thinking ,is it worth it?
I turned 85 two weeks ago.
I have fairly shabby couches, again is it worth it.
It is actually a depressing situation.
Anyone who can go for anything and know they can should go for it, whether clothing, furniture of white goods.
You may well see them out and get to replace them.

I'd say go for it!
Does it really matter if you don't get 'full use out if it' ?
As long as you're enjoying it and its giving you pleasure - in the moment, then its worth doing, or buying.

grannyticktock Mon 25-Jul-22 15:27:49

I once bought a pair of walking socks called "Thousand Mile Socks", and said solemnly to the sales assistant, "Mind you, I might not be good for 1000 miles of tough walks now. Will I get my money's worth?" So we decided I could leave them to a daughter, with a note saying "Still good for 380 miles" or whatever.

Aveline Mon 25-Jul-22 15:23:32

Nice coat Maw but it's quite a fashionable one. You're bound to want to update it in a few years!
We thought Baz was our last cat. Couldn't have been more wrong (I'm glad to say)

I did feel rather guilty spending so much money on my new kitchen this year (year of my 81st birthday). But, it was the first time in my life that I have ever had a brand new kitchen designed by myself, and - anyway - it will add to the ease to sell the flat when I die, etc.etc.

Twelve years ago, I was given an M&S voucher, and purchased, in their sales, a lovely, very warm winter coat. Only gets worn on a few times each winter, then washed and put away. Will definitely see me out!!!!

LinFreed Mon 25-Jul-22 14:46:00

Paddyann54 I'm with you all the way there!

LinFreed Mon 25-Jul-22 14:44:41

Well, i was 70 this year. I'm moving house this week...where I was widowed 5 years ago.

Most of the arts & crafts furniture, including 3 sofas, are going to the British Heart Foundation. Throwing out most of the rest, apart from dear momentos.

Bought myself a 60s flat and going retro there. It's never too late to start afresh and not have to just see things out!

Doodledog Mon 25-Jul-22 14:44:01

Lovely coat, Maw.

I am of the opinion that you can't take it with you, so even if you have reason to expect you won't 'get the wear' out of something, you should still get it and enjoy it while you can.

paddyann54 Mon 25-Jul-22 14:43:58

annsixty if you get pleasure from it for even a day its worth it .I've always changed furnishings very regularly at a whim I'm not about to stop now .
We have friends who've been saying "this'll see me out" for the past 20 years ,since they were in their 40's ,honestly its so depressing to hear.Live in the here and now ,enjoy what you want regardless of your age ,you only live once!
