Flower of Scotland I’d sung by the Scottish rugby team at National games. I rather like it, especially played by bagpipes.
Racist rapist of Sikh woman in Walsall
America, three headlines today, help me please to understand!
To Land of Hope and Glory? Stop singing about one hereditary person and sing about the nation!

Is not I’d.
I'm a thorough Christian and general monarchist, and would love to see
A new anthem for Britain
New anthems for the separate countries.
I like Flower of Scotland ("mine") but it's about defeating the English invader.
The Welsh one is also about defiance in the face of the English invader.
I don't know how Northern Ireland would feel.
Not Rule Britannia, which does actually mention Britain, unlike Land of Hope and Glory.
I like all of the above, I find them very stirring, but the words are very jingoistic and embarrassing.
Lyrics of the Welsh National Anthem (translated into English)
This land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature
Her brave warriors, fine patriots
Shed their blood for freedom
(Chorus)
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.
Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,
Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;
Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be
Her streams and rivers to me.
(Chorus)
Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,
The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,
The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand
Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.
Every word of it is true Ailidh, Wales was invaded and overthrown by England, but the people are unbowed by that and still love their own country.
I've always though "Between the Wars" by Billy Bragg would be a good UK anthem.
"Sweet moderation, heart of this nation, desert us not; we are between the wars."
Scots national anthem? A man's a man for a'that.
It's comin yet for a' that,
That man to man the world oe'r
Shall brithers be for a' that.
No religion, no warfare
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
Not quite right Casdon as “Gwlad! Gwlad! Pleidiol wyf i’m Gwlad” actually means “Country! Country! I’m pledged to my Country”
Land translates to tir in Welsh.

I know, but for whatever reason the English translation has always been to Land of my Fathers, I don’t know why, so I think the translator used a bit of poetic licence, typical Welsh.
I brought this subject up on Grans net quite a while back and no one had an answer. I agree the English anthem should be changed .
So many that come to mind have religious leanings."I vow to thee my country". Land of hope and glory at least mentions that people should be free.
Maybe it's because so many English people have their own regional songs.
Not Charlie is my darling I hope that was a joke. it's about Bonnie Prince Charlie and he certainly did not do his country any good, turning back when the going got tough and finally escaping dressed as a woman. We would also be getting back to singing about our monarch.
My favourites are the Marseilles rousing, patriotic and rallying, and the Irish. Hearing it being belted out by a group of tough Rugby players is certainly emotional.
Yes, God save the Queen is archaic a new anthem is long overdue
A modified version of Land of Hope and Glory would do nicely
turning back when the going got tough
I think you mean turning back when the reinforcements chickened out and his generals told him to, despite him wanting to press on to London where the King was anticipating invasion and preparing to flee.
Anyway. It's quite a naughty song. I'd go with that.
How about the English national anthem being ‘Football’s Coming Home’? That’s a great song, and everybody knows the words, but could be adapted to fit - I can’t get it out of my head when I hear it.
Land of Hope and Glory is all about empire building. Jingoistic and a great way to annoy most of the commonwealth, and a shedload of Brits.
Elgar loathed, by all accounts, what he saw as the nationalistic lyrics, and wished Benson had chosen someone else’s music for them.

It is a naughty song and we were taught it at school.Even though the last battle on English soil was fought in our county. The little village where the battle was fought has 1745 in it's e mail address.
He comes to mind quite often as a lot of the very old houses in the area have their date above the door and not joking I think Gosh Prince Charlie walked or marched passed these it certainly makes you realise how old they are and still inhabited. It also makes me think what would the country have been like if he had marched on. God save the King would might not been written as it was for one of the German Georges.

Oh no ???
The Marseillaise is a good tune, but the words are very bloodthirsty. Maybe the revolutionary spirit is still alive in the minds of the French.
I have loved Maggie Holland's 'Place Called England' since it was written, and this is an excuse to post a link to my favourite version, by the (getting older) Young 'Uns:

I also love Billy Bragg's UK version of this Land is Your Land - it's never really caught on - maybe because the original is so wholly American.
Casdon- I know, Flower of Scotland is about sending proud Edward's armies home take think again. The more I study Gaelic, the more aware I am of the historical oppression of Scotland by England.
I am not one that thinks that history should be whitewashed but I would still rather see modern national anthems that sound positive about the now and the future, rather than reflecting an oppressed past.
Actually, reviewing the words "Scotland the Brave" courtesy of Google, I think I could push for its reinstatement over Flower.
I just wish England. Kuldip have it’s own anthem too! At sporting events our lads and lasses have to wade through the dirge of the National Anthem. It’s not rousing enough for such events. When competitors raise the roof with theirs, we are stuck with the downbeat tune - it flattens the mood and certainly isn’t inspirational! Pity us.
*could
(I don’t even know what/where/who Kuldip is!) I’m going to have to Google it now ...
It’s an Indian name apparently.
These bluddy long nails obviously tapping on the keyboard. I’m glad I’m going to have them snipped short tomorrow!

"Kuldip" LOL!
... it's probably your keyboard more than your nails - mine does the same...
It even has its own national anthem...
Clip of Billy Connelly - very funny!
Great post!
❤️ it Dickens!
I really ought to preview first ha!
I’ve always liked “I Vow to Thee My Country” set to Holst’s “Jupiter” music .
It works at sports fixtures too (The World in Union)
